A first half Andre Gray double and a late Matt Taylor goal ended Fulham’s unbeaten run at Turf Moor on Tuesday evening.

A first half Andre Gray double and a late Matt Taylor goal ended Fulham’s unbeaten run as the Whites fell to a 3-1 defeat at Turf Moor on Tuesday evening.

Gray powered a header past Joe Lewis at the far post midway through the first half before he doubled the lead for Sean Dyche’s side when he fired an effort home after a throughball from Scott Arfield on 36 minutes.

Shortly after the break Ross McCormack fired the Whites back into the tie and the visitors were dominant for the remainder of the half. But they couldn’t find that elusive equaliser to take a point back to the capital and conceded a third in stoppage time as Taylor poked home past the wrong-footed Lewis.

The Whites were forced into one change to the side that won emphatically at Bristol City previously with goalkeeper Andrew Lonergan missing out due to injury and Lewis taking his place in the starting XI. Kit Symons stuck with the 3-5-2 wingback system that worked so well at Ashton Gate previously.

The hosts had the opening effort of the game as £9m man Gray got free down the right and cut the ball back to David Jones but his shot was wayward and didn’t test Lewis. Moments later Gray found himself through on goal after a flick on from Sam Vokes but his touch let him down and the ball ran into the arms of Lewis.

A short corner from Tom Cairney on seven minutes found Jamie O’Hara on the edge of box but the midfielder couldn’t keep his effort down and the ball sailed over the bar.

On 14 minutes Ben Mee delivered a ball into the Fulham box from the left which was met by Vokes but his header cleared Lewis’ goal.

Moments later the Clarets had their clearest opening of the game, Joey Barton’s ball into the box wasn’t cleared to safety and George Boyd’s cross back into Vokes saw the striker mishit his first effort but then see his second well blocked by the Fulham defence, as the home faithful appealed for handball.

However, the danger didn’t pass and the hosts took the lead on 18 minutes when Gray powerfully headed in at the far post after a dangerous delivery from the left by Jones.

The lively Gray was causing problems and found himself in behind after latching onto an Arfield throughball but the Whites got back well to smother the attack as there were more hopeful appeals for a handball from the Turf Moor crowd.

After Fulham looked to be getting on top with a good period of possession they were hit with a sucker punch on 36 minutes. Arfield picked up the ball in the middle and played a ball through the Fulham backline and it was Gray who made no mistake again as he fired a vicious effort past Lewis.

Symons’ side looked to reduce the deficit immediately and after good build-up play from Ryan Tunnicliffe he found Cairney on the edge of the box but he curled his shot harmlessly over Tom Heaton’s goal

The visitors then had another effort from range as Tunnicliffe laid the ball to O’Hara but his attempt didn’t trouble Heaton.

It could have been worse just before the break as Boyd played in Arfield down the right and he cut the ball back to Barton but thankfully his effort was off target and could only find the travelling 271 Fulham fans who had made the long trip up to Lancashire.

Rain started to fall as the second half got under way and Symons made a formation change at the break with the Whites switching to 4-4-2 with Tim Ream moving to left-back behind James Husband on the wing.

And the change seemed to have an instant impact. In the first opening of the second half the Whites got themselves back into the game on 51 minutes. Lovely build-up from Cairney found McCormack in the box. He shifted the ball onto his left foot and curled a shot into the corner of the net for his 10th of the season.

The hard work to get back into the game was nearly undone when Gray again latched onto a ball over the top from Jones to lob the onrushing Lewis only for his chip to hit the bar before being cleared by Ryan Fredericks.

The visitors were living dangerously and on 56 minutes Vokes looped a header past Lewis that was superbly cleared off the line by Dan Burn before Gray hit the rebound just over the bar.

Fulham made the first change of the game on 57 minutes with Alex Kačaniklić replacing Ream and Husband switching to left-back.

McCormack then had an effort on target as he found space just outside the box but could not connect as he would have wished and the ball rolled comfortably into the arms of Heaton.

The Whites were nearly level on 63 minutes when Cairney’s deep ball found Moussa Dembélé who controlled and swivelled to face goal but fired his shot just over the bar.

Dembélé again tested Heaton shortly afterwards when he connected with Husband’s cross from the left but his header was straight at the keeper.

Fulham were dominant at this stage of the game and Fredericks found himself clear down the right before he found McCormack in the box who looked to replicate his first goal, switching the ball onto his left - but his effort was blocked on this occasion and Burnley’s slender lead remained.

Dyche made his first change of the game on 74 minutes as Taylor replaced Boyd. Symons was forced to respond after an injury to Fredericks who was replaced by Lasse Vigen Christensen and Matt Smith came on for O’Hara as the visitors looked to draw level with time running out.

Smith was winning everything in the air and on 83 minutes his flick found Dembélé in the box but as the angle narrowed he could only shoot straight into the arms of Heaton.

The Clarets made their second change of the night with four to go as Chris Long replaced goalscorer Gray.

Vokes had the chance to seal the points as the home side counter attacked but his shot was weak and was dealt with by Lewis comfortably.

The home side then put the game to bed when substitute Taylor poked home past Lewis after a pass from Arfield in stoppage time to make it 3-1

Burn almost made it 3-2 at the death as he wriggled free on the right and his cross was deflected towards goal but Heaton tipped it round the post as the hosts took all three points.
