A late Craig Noone strike denied Fulham victory in our opening game of the 2015/16 Sky Bet Championship.

A late Craig Noone strike denied Fulham victory in our opening game of the 2015/16 Sky Bet Championship.

Matt Smith – who had hit the post in the first half – capitalised on a goalkeeping error to head his side in front moments after the restart. The visiting fans had their hearts in mouths moments later when Anthony Pilkington found the net, but it was ruled out for handball.

Ben Pringle was prevented a debut goal by a fine defensive block as the Whites looked to increase their advantage, while at the other end Andrew Lonergan had to be at his best to keep out a low Joe Mason strike.

Fulham looked on course for all three points on the opening day but City earned a share of the spoils with four minutes remaining when substitute Noone exquisitely found the far corner from range with an angled effort. Ross McCormack could have won it in stoppage time, though, but couldn’t get the ball under control after Moussa Dembélé had squared across the face of goal.

Kit Symons handed debuts to four players, with Lonergan in goal and Pringle, Tom Cairney and Jamie O’Hara all starting in midfield alongside Lasse Vigen Christensen, while Jazz Richards made his first competitive appearance as a permanent Fulham player. Luke Garbutt’s injury presented Kay Voser with a chance to impress at left-back, and Geordie duo Shaun Hutchinson and Dan Burn were the preferred centre-back pairing. Smith led the line with Captain McCormack tucked in behind him.

Cardiff enjoyed the better of the play in the early stages and had the game’s first chance on 10 minutes when former Fulham man Kagisho Dikgacoi slid Pilkington in. His ball across the face was met by Mason but he sliced his first time strike way off target.

But moments later it was the Whites who almost broke the deadlock. A high ball was contested by Smith and stand-in goalkeeper Simon Moore – a battle which the striker won, only to see his header strike the foot of the post.

The second 10 minutes of the game were far better for Fulham than the first 10, with the visitors enjoying plenty of possession. The next opening fell our way, too, as O’Hara’s right-footed cross was nodded over by Smith from eight yards.

Our number nine was causing all sorts of problems for the Bluebirds backline and he saw another chance fall his way just before the half hour mark. Patient build up play resulted in Christensen playing Voser in to his left and the full-back floated in a lovely first time cross that Smith attacked well, but he missed the target with his header.

The home side drew a first save of the afternoon from Lonergan several minutes later, though, as a deflected Pilkington cross made its way to Mason who span well and rifled in a dangerous shot that was parried away by a strong Lonergan wrist.

City had enjoyed the better of the play as half-time approached, but McCormack had his first sniff of goal on 42 minutes after collecting Smith’s flick-on, but the skipper skewed his left footer wide of the far post, before Mason forced another good save from Lonergan at the other end a minute later.

Inside the first minute of the second half, Cardiff went inches from taking the lead when Pilkington got the better of Voser to fashion space for a shot, which deflected off a Fulham defender and crashed against the bar.

But the Whites were not deterred and took the lead shortly after. Pringle’s speculative shot from range caught Moore by surprise and although he made the save, he was forced to drop the ball as he back peddled towards his own goal line. That was all the invitation Smith needed as he bravely stooped to bullet his header into the back of the net.

Cardiff thought they’d equalised almost immediately when Pilkington found the net, but thankfully it was ruled out after the eagle-eyed officials spotted him using his hand to get the ball over the line - something he was duly booked for.

McCormack had a half chance on 55 minutes when Christensen cut the ball back to him, but Lee Peltier made a good block to prevent his shot reaching the goal.

A swift counter attack then should have seen Fulham double their lead as McCormack played Pringle in. The ball was slightly behind him though and his right footed swing deflected over for a corner that came to nothing.

The Fulham goal lived a charmed life just after the hour mark when a corner fell for Matthew Connolly. He shimmied to find space, only for O’Hara to make a great block as he went to pull the trigger. The Whites struggled to clear and the ball sat up kindly for the defender again, but his scissor kick sailed some way over.

The home side then made their first substitution, giving a debut to Newcastle United loanee Sammy Ameobi, who came on for Revell.

Cardiff began to ramp up the pressure and with quarter of an hour remaining Lonergan pulled off a fantastic low save to deny Mason whose shot look destined for the corner, before Scott Malone fired narrowly over a minute later.

Each side then made a substitution, with Dikgacoi replaced by Noone, while goalscorer Smith made way for Dembélé.

The youngster was lively when he came on, but had his name taken with five minutes remaining for kicking the ball away.

And a minute later Cardiff were level. Noone cut in from the left and fired in an excellent strike that left Lonergan with no chance.

A lovely Cairney pass over the top almost presented Dembélé with a chance as he challenged with two defenders, but the ball fell kindly for the home side who were able to clear.

Fulham should have won it in the first minute of stoppage time as Dembélé raced clear and squared to McCormack, but the ball seemed to get stuck under his feet and he was unable to pop it into the unguarded net.

Both sides threw caution to the wind and went in search of a winner, but it wasn’t forthcoming as the Whites were forced to settle for a point in the Welsh capital.
