Two late goals cost Fulham a win on Sunday as Charlton Athletic fought back to draw at The Valley.

Two late goals cost Fulham a win on Sunday as Charlton Athletic fought back to draw at The Valley.

The Whites had gone into half-time in front after Ryan Tunnicliffe turned home the loose ball following a Ross McCormack free-kick.

And the midfielder went from scorer to provider when he set up McCormack for the second goal just before the hour mark.

The Whites had chances for number three but Charlton struck next with 10 minutes remaining when substitute Johnnie Jackson powered in a header, before Jordan Cousins struck in the sixth minute of stoppage time to nab a point.

Kit Symons made two changes to the side that lost at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers earlier in the week. Jazz Richards returned from injury to replace Ryan Fredericks who dropped to the bench after picking up a knock in that game, while Lasse Vigen Christensen took the place of the suspended Tom Cairney.

Despite Fulham kicking off, Charlton should have been ahead within 30 seconds when Conor McAleny burst through one-on-one with Andrew Lonergan, only to drag his low shot wide of the near post. An early let-off for Fulham.

The Whites responded with a couple of promising moves down the left involving James Husband. First he skipped beyond Alou Diarra before smashing a shot into Patrick Bauer, before next collecting a clever McCormack pass and squaring to Moussa Dembélé whose shot was blocked.

Both sides were struggling to keep hold of the ball and the next chance fell to Johann Gudmundsson on nine minutes after he’d gained possession, but his shot from 30 yards was always rising and landed somewhere amongst the Fulham fans behind the goal.

A foul by McCormack on El-Hadji Ba a little further out then allowed Gundmundsson to test the Whites backline with a deep free-kick. Diarra managed to flick it on but only into the grateful arms of Lonergan.

The Addicks had enjoyed the better of the chances but 25 minutes in Richards went close for his side, cutting in from the right and unleashing a fierce left-footer towards goal that needed palming away by Nick Pope.

Then, moments later, McAleny tried his luck with a similar effort at the other end which sailed marginally wide of the upright.

Those two chances seemed to open the game up and it was Fulham’s turn again next, as Jamie O’Hara opened his body up and tried to place one, which required the intervention of Pope who turned it behind for a corner.

And it was the visitors who made the breakthrough on 33 minutes with Tunnicliffe’s first goal for the Club. McCormack won a free-kick 30 yards out after being pushed by Diarra, and his thumping set-piece was parried by Pope, with Tunnicliffe reacting quickest to pop it in for 1-0.

Charlton hit back with a nice move that culminated in McAleny side-footing a shot towards goal from outside the box, but it lacked the power to trouble Lonergan.

Tony Watt showed good skill by the left-hand corner flag in the 39th minute to skip beyond Richards, but his cross-cum-shot narrowly evaded the outstretched toe of Karlan Ahearne-Grant.

Within a minute of the restart Tunnicliffe went close to doubling his tally. After winning possession in the Charlton box, he steadied himself and let fly, but his shot was straight at Pope who was able to make the stop.

The Fulham midfielder was full of his usual energy and he teed McCormack up after a surging run three minutes later, but his left-footed effort was pretty tame and claimed comfortably by Pope.

Christensen was then shown the first card of the game as he pulled back Ahearne-Grant as he looked to break on the halfway line.

O’Hara fired over at the end of a counter-attack before Watt just missed his connection with Gudmundsson’s inswinging cross as both teams went in search of the game’s next goal.

The home side were enjoying a decent spell and should have equalised when Ba was slipped through on 55 minutes, but Lonergan made himself big and kept out the strike, before saving from Watt from 20 yards as Charlton came again.

The Whites remained a threat, though, and a couple of minutes later Dembélé took aim from distance, but his curling, dipping effort landed on the roof of the net.

And we showed our attacking prowess again just before the hour mark, with Tunnicliffe heavily involved again. He showed fantastic determination to beat his man on the left before slipping McCormack in – his touch was perhaps a tad heavy but he showed his talent by lashing it into the far corner on his weaker foot nonetheless.

Symons then made his first change of the game, handing Luke Garbutt a debut in place of Ben Pringle.

Great play from Christensen then saw his waltz into the area before squaring for McCormack whose shot was well blocked by Diarra.

On 65 minutes Gundmundsson followed Christensen into the referee’s notebook after going in hard and late on Husband. Before the free-kick could be taken, Charlton replaced Morgan Fox with Zakarya Bergdich. Franck Moussa came on not long after for McAleny.

Fulham were playing with a swagger now and it could have been 3-0 in the 73rd minute with two chances. First Christensen’s hit was blocked by Diarra, before Garbutt sliced the rebound wide on his right foot.

Dembélé then departed, to a standing ovation from the visiting supporters, with Cauley Woodrow coming on in his place, while Charlton brought club captain Jackson on for Ba a few minutes later.

It proved to be an inspired substitution as Jackson netted with his first touch, powering in a header from Gudmundsson’s corner.

That goal gave Charlton the momentum with 10 minutes remaining and they really took the game to Fulham, with Cousins then drawing a save from Lonergan after taking aim from the edge of the box.

They had a really good opening in the 88th minute when Watt worked space in the area but his cut-back could only find Richards. Fulham then went close to killing the game on the counter, but Pope was able to keep out Woodrow.

Moussa then had a shot deflected behind by the excellent Richard Stearman, before Woodrow looked to have found the corner at the other end, only for a deflection to take it wide.

Just prior to four minutes of added time being announced, O’Hara made way for Mattila.

In the second of those added minutes Charlton threatened from another corner as Fulham struggled to clear their lines, but thankfully Ahearne-Grant smashed the ball over on the spin.

Devastatingly, though, in the sixth minute of time added on, the Addicks nicked an equaliser. A deep cross from the right was met by Cousins who crashed a header beyond Lonergan to earn his side a point.

It could have been even worse two minutes later when Watt broke clear, but his shot was well blocked by Stearman.

That was the last chance of the game as Fulham were forced to settle for a point, having seemingly been on their way to three.
