Another late goal conceded cost Fulham dear as they were beaten 2-1 at Hull City on Wednesday evening.

Another late goal conceded cost Fulham dear as they were beaten 2-1 at Hull City on Wednesday evening.

The Whites struggled to find their rhythm in the first half and went behind when Ahmed Elmohamady headed in Andy Robertson’s deep cross.

Things got worse for the visitors before the half was out as Matt Smith and Marcus Bettinelli both went off after colliding, with the latter’s injury looking particularly nasty as he departed on a stretcher.

Fulham were much improved after the restart and restored parity through a stunning Tom Cairney strike, with the former Hull man curling home his second stunner in as many games.

But Kit Symons’ men were to go home empty handed for the second game in a row as Sone Aluko had the final say four minutes from time when he fired beyond replacement goalkeeper Andrew Lonergan from inside the area.

Symons kept faith with the same starting XI that suffered a cruel 94th-minute defeat at home to Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday, but was able to name Sean Kavanagh on the bench for the first time this season following his recovery from injury.

There was little goalmouth action in the opening stages, with both sides having one half chance. Firstly, a neat Fulham move culminated in Ross McCormack selling his marker a dummy which almost allowed Lasse Vigen Christensen in, only for the danger to be effectively cleared, as was the case at the other end when Nikolay Bodurov firmly thwacked away Robertson’s cross-shot.

The hosts came closest to breaking the deadlock 24 minutes in when Aluko’s deep cross was headed back into the danger zone by Elmohamady, but Bodurov was there to sweep away for a corner. That set-piece posed problems of its own, though, as Tom Huddlestone’s delivery found its way to Curtis Davies whose sweet strike grazed the top of the crossbar and sailed over.

They were presented with another opening minutes later when a loose Kay Voser pass was intercepted by Chuba Akpom who bore down on goal before letting fly from the edge of the box – thankfully Shaun Hutchinson was there to make a brave block.

Abel Hernandez then hit the bar with a header, but it wouldn’t have counted as he fouled Hutchinson prior to making a connection with the ball.

The Tigers had taken control of the game and took a deserved lead on 34 minutes. A short corner was played to Robertson and his curling cross was nodded down and into the back of the net by Elmohamady.

A minute later Pringle became the first man to enter the referee’s book for manhandling Hernandez.

The Whites had to wait until the 39th minute for their first effort on goal, but Smith’s tame right footed strike from 20 yards was easily claimed by Allan McGregor.

Hull almost scored an exact replica of their opener on 42 minutes, but this time Elmohamady’s header from Robertson’s deep cross deflected just wide of the far post.

Fulham then suffered a second blow of the evening, as Bettinelli had to be stretchered off following a collision in the penalty area. Lonergan came on in his place, while Moussa Dembélé replaced Smith who had collided with his goalkeeper.

The second half began quietly but Fulham had a sniff of an opportunity 11 minutes in when McCormack laid the ball off for Cairney, but his volley cleared the crossbar.

Bodurov became the second man booked on the hour mark for a body check on Akpom 40 yards from goal.

The Whites had their best chance of the game two minutes later when a sublime Christensen pass picked out the run of Richards. He beat his man but his cutback was put out for a corner before McCormack could pull the trigger. Hutchinson then headed over Pringle’s set-piece.

Hull then made their first substitution of the evening, replacing £10m record signing Hernandez with Sam Clucas.

Fulham were enjoying their best spell of the match and had another half chance when Richards crossed in for Dembélé on 68 minutes, but the Frenchman couldn’t generate the desired direction and it cleared the bar.

An O’Hara cross that was spilled by McGregor was then taken off Cairney’s toes by McCormack, but the midfielder grabbed the equaliser his side had been threatening with an absolute stunner. Christensen fed him 20 yards from goal and he pearled an absolute beauty into the postage stamp.

The hosts responded by taking off Akpom and bringing on Nikica Jelavic.

Dembélé won a free-kick a good 30 yards from goal on 78 minutes but that didn’t deter McCormack, whose stinging strike needed two firm hands from McGregor.

Steve Bruce then made his final switch as Isaac Hayden came on for Huddlestone.

It had been all Fulham in the game but Hull flexed their muscle again on 80 minutes when a deep David Meyler cross was met by Clucas, but he nodded across goal and behind.

A grim sense of déjà vu then engulfed the travelling Fulham fans as a late goal cost us points. The Whites failed to clear their lines and Aluko was on hand to lash the ball beyond Lonergan.

Symons then played his final hand by introducing Alexander Kačaniklić for Pringle.

O’Hara had his name taken by the referee for a late challenge on Aluko, in what was the last action of note as the Whites tasted defeat again.
