A stoppage time equaliser denied Fulham all three points at Ipswich Town’s Portman Road on Tuesday evening.

A stoppage time equaliser denied Fulham all three points at Ipswich Town’s Portman Road on Tuesday evening.

A quiet first half was notable only for Ryan Tunnicliffe’s poked effort that was well saved by Bartosz Bialkowski, who made another good stop after the break to keep out Shaun Hutchinson’s header.

But there was nothing he could do to deny Moussa Dembélé the opener when he swept home a fine first time strike in the 66th minute for his 17th goal of the season.

And it looked as though that was how it would stay against a lethargic Ipswich side, but they eventually broke through in the 91st minute when Jonas Knudsen smashed in via the woodwork.

Slaviša Jokanović made four changes to the side that were comfortably beaten in Brighton on Friday. Out went Ryan Fredericks, Jamie O’Hara, the injured Fernando Amorebieta and the ill Emerson Hyndman, and in came Hutchinson, Dan Burn, Lasse Vigen Christensen and Rohan Ince.

There was a dour start to the game in which neither side was able to seize control of proceedings, as was evident by the fact that we had to wait until the 18th minute for the first attempt on goal. And even then, Ross McCormack’s strike after cutting inside was easily blocked.

Dembélé went closer a matter of seconds later, as he sent in a dipping volley with the outside of his boot that flew just wide of the near post.

It was the Whites who were proving the more penetrative of the two sides and a quick counter in the 24th minute saw Dembélé feed McCormack to his right, but our number 44’s vicious strike flew off an Ipswich boot and behind for a corner.

The best chance of the game came just after the half hour mark when Fulham’s two wide midfielders combined after drifting inside. Christensen drove forwards before poking it into the path of Tunnicliffe who had made a clever run, and his poked finish drew a fine reflex save from Bialkowski.

Dembélé then had another go shortly after following some good play by Scott Parker, but having eventually worked a shooting position he blasted way over.

The first effort of the second half came nine minutes in when Richard Stearman tried to connect with McCormack’s corner, but his half-volley skewed off target.

Ipswich – who were still yet to have a shot – then introduced David McGoldrick to try and add some firepower. Andre Dozzell was the man replaced, while Kevin Bru also came on for Jonathan Douglas.

As the clock ticked beyond the hour mark, Dembélé was presented with another sight of goal, and his 25-yarder took a nick on its way through to win Fulham a corner, from which Hutchinson nearly broke the deadlock.

The centre-back stooped to get a firm head on McCormack’s delivery, and it was on its way in until Bialkowski superbly tipped it over.

With the Tractor Boys still waiting for their first effort on goal, their fans began screaming ‘shoot’ every time any player got the ball. Their frustration was understandable, as there can’t be many occasions when a home side goes so long without at least one shot.

And things got even worse for them a minute later when the Whites went in front. A great ball over the top found Parker who had marauded into the box, and he took his time before cutting it back to Dembélé who rammed a curling strike beyond the sprawling Bialkowski and inside the far post.

Fulham then made their first change, as Fredericks replaced Christensen.

In the 71st minute, Town had the shot their fans were craving, but Bru’s effort from distance was never finding the target.

Hutchinson went close again from another McCormack corner on 73 minutes, but glanced his header a yard wide of the far post.

Brett Pitman has a good record of scoring against Fulham in the last couple of seasons and he went close to doing it again when he let fly from 20 yards on the angle, but Marcus Bettinelli managed to get fingertips to it at full stretch to put it behind for a corner.

Bialkowski had a huge let-off in the 82nd minute when he smashed a clearance into McCormack’s midriff, but luckily for him it was impossible for the Scotland international to control.

With six minutes left, Jokanović made his second change as McCormack made way for Tom Cairney.

Moments later, Parker became the first man booked for a late challenge. That was our Captain’s last action of the evening as his workmanlike shift came to an end when he was replaced by Chris Baird.

In the final minute of normal time, McGoldrick was allowed to bomb forward before rifling in a low strike that drew another good stop from Bettinelli.

Just after stoppage time was announced, Ipswich grabbed an equaliser that they scarcely deserved. Sears managed to zip in a cross and Knudsen slammed a high shot in that smacked the crossbar and landed over the line.

In the fourth minute of stoppage time Tommy Smith decided he couldn’t wait until the end of the game to swap shirts with Dembélé and tried to rip it off his back as the striker advanced on goal – something he was duly booked for.

And with that the match came to a close, with the home side much the happier with a point.
