A Moussa Dembélé strike late in the first half saw Fulham draw 1-1 away to MK Dons on Saturday afternoon.

A Moussa Dembélé strike late in the first half saw Fulham draw 1-1 away to MK Dons on Saturday afternoon.

On our first league trip to stadiummk, Caretaker Head Coach Peter Grant almost saw his side take the lead when Ross McCormack squared for Dembélé, only for the teenager to sky his close range effort.

The hosts then went in front with 30 minutes played when Dean Bowditch rifled in a wicked strike via the post.

Dembélé made no mistake with his next chance as he found the net from McCormack’s centre. That was the way it stayed in the second half, although McCormack almost won it only to see his shot cleared off the line.

There were three changes to the side that were beaten by Birmingham City last time out. Luke Garbutt came in for the suspended James Husband following his dismissal against Blues, Ryan Fredericks returned in place of the ill Tim Ream, while Lasse Vigen Christensen was left out as a precaution, with Sean Kavanagh given a first appearance of the season in his absence.

Six minutes in the first half chance of the game fell Fulham’s way, but Dembélé’s looping header from Jamie O’Hara’s free-kick was comfortably caught by David Martin from underneath his crossbar.

The home side went much closer three minutes later when Bowditch was allowed to let fly from 20-plus yards. His effort was heading towards the postage stamp until Joe Lewis made a superb fingertip save to push it over the bar.

The subsequent corner brought danger, too, as the ball was eventually worked to Josh Murphy on the edge of the box who drew another fine sprawling save from Lewis. Fulham would have felt aggrieved if either had found its way in, however, following what seemed a blatant handball by Murphy in the build-up to the initial chance.

The Dons should really have gone in front with 18 minutes played when Bowditch fired a low shot through a sea of bodies following a short corner, but thankfully it fell to a man in yellow who was able to divert it away.

Fulham had struggled to make a real impression on the game but squandered a gilt-edged opening on 22 minutes. Tom Cairney slipped McCormack in down the left and the Captain fizzed a ball across the face to Dembélé who could only slice his shot over the bar with the goal gaping.

The home side made the breakthrough with half an hour played when Bowditch was able to get the ball under control and hit a shot on the swivel which whistled into the net via the far post.

It could have been worse shortly after when a deep cross was met by Bowditch at the far post, but Garbutt was on hand to slide in and scoop the ball off the line.

Then some silky footwork from Cairney resulted in him being hacked down 25 yards out, but McCormack drilled his low free-kick into the 10-man MK wall.

But the equaliser did arrive seconds later, with perhaps a touch of fortune in the build-up. Kavanagh let fly from distance only to smash his shot into Cairney’s back. The ball then looped up into the path of McCormack who squared a first time cross on the volley and this time Dembélé made no mistake as he side-footed beyond Martin.

It was a perfect end to the half for the Whites but they suffered a blow at the break as Fredericks had to be replaced by Kay Voser.

Kavanagh was presented with a sight of goal 10 minutes after the restart but his curler from distance was an easy enough catch for Martin.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international was then shown the game’s first yellow card for a foul on Murphy as Dons looked to break. Murphy whipped the subsequent set-piece in dangerously, but Darren Potter’s glancing header sailed a yard wide of the far post.

Hearts were in mouths again a minute later as Murphy’s slide-rule pass appeared to send Bowditch in on goal, but the striker – under pressure from Richard Stearman – shot tamely at Lewis.

Just after the hour mark, McCormack had his name taken following a foul on an MK defender.

Fulham had a let-off in the 66th minute when Dons right-back Jordan Spence got in behind Garbutt and cut the ball back to Nicky Maynard who leant back as he connected and ballooned his effort over the bar.

The Whites were forced into another change soon after as Tunnicliffe limped off, with Sakari Mattila coming on in his place. During the next break in play, Dons replaced Bowditch with Rob Hall.

Both sides then threatened as Murphy’s dangerous ball across the face was hacked clear by Dan Burn, before Kavanagh had a shot blocked at the other end.

The home side made their second change on 77, when Samir Carruthers was replaced by Carl Baker.

Four minutes later McCormack thought he’d put his side in front when he drilled an effort beyond Martin, but his strike was cleared off the line.

With five minutes to go, MK made their final switch of the game as Maynard came off for Simon Church.

Space opened up in front of Cairney on 88 minutes but his swerving shot was straight down the throat of Martin who saved easily, before Baker sliced over on his left foot under pressure from Mattila.

Murphy had been a threat all day and in the third minute of stoppage time delivered a dangerous ball across goal that needed diverting behind by Garbutt. The following corner came to nothing as the two sides were forced to settle for a point in the first ever competitive meeting between the clubs.
