Fulham were beaten 3-0 by Nottingham Forest at a blustery City Ground on Saturday afternoon.

The Whites were by far the better team in the first half, albeit without creating a plethora of clear cut chances, but went in behind courtesy of Matt Mills’ 45th minute header.

Forest doubled their lead soon after the break when Chris O’Grady fired in the loose ball after Joe Lewis had saved from Nelson Oliveira.

And they rounded off the scoring when Mills was able to nod in his second of the game late on. The defender could even have had a hat-trick but was unfortunate to see another header in stoppage time cannon back off the crossbar.

Caretaker Head Coach Peter Grant made two changes to the side that drew with Preston North End a week ago, with Matt Smith replacing the injured Moussa Dembélé up front, while Ben Pringle came in for Sean Kavanagh.

Fulham registered their first effort on goal with less than 40 seconds on the clock. Jamie O’Hara won possession deep in his own half and spread the play out to Pringle on the left, he then advanced before delivering a cross into Smith who was stretching as he connected with the ball, and his header flew over into the Whites fans behind the goal.

Four minutes later Dorus De Vries was forced into a first save when Ross McCormack nodded Tom Cairney’s flick-on from an O’Hara free-kick towards goal, but the Scotsman was unable to generate the power necessary to trouble to the Forest goalkeeper.

The home side threatened for the first time in the ninth minute when O’Grady flicked a header on to Ben Osborn down the left-wing, but his deep cross was too close to the byline for Ryan Mendes who could only help the ball on its way out.

The closest anyone came to scoring arrived midway through the half when an inviting ball from Pringle was whipped in, and Smith’s downward header was well saved by De Vries. It was quite close to the keeper in fairness, either side and it would have been a goal.

Fulham were enjoying all the possession but a mix-up in the area almost presented Forest with the opener on 29 minutes, however Ben Osborn’s poked effort was hacked away.

Up the other end moments later a deep free-kick had De Vries worried when one of his own defenders headed goalwards, but the ball unfortunately dropped onto the roof of the net rather than just under the bar as it had threatened to do.

A ball over the top on 36 minutes sent O’Grady in behind and his cutback looked set to be met by an arriving man in red, but Ryan Fredericks made a superb sliding tackle to nick the ball away.

With three minutes remaining in the half Fulham came close to getting the goal their play had deserved. Cairney drew in three defenders on the edge of the box before squeezing it square to McCormack who looked to place one in the far corner, but De Vries got across to palm it out for a corner.

And in the final minute of the first-half, Forest took the lead. A deep corner was sent back across goal by Eric Lichaj to where Mills was lurking and his header found its way between Lewis and his covering defenders.

They really should have doubled their lead five minutes after the restart when Lichaj found himself in one-on-one after Fulham had failed to clear a free-kick, but Lewis made himself big and got in the way of the right-back’s shot at the expense of a corner.

It was a slow start to the second period by the Whites and they were duly punished on 52. Oliveira’s fierce strike was only parried by Lewis and O’Grady was first to the loose ball to slam it home.

Just after the hour mark O’Grady went in very late on James Husband but somehow managed to escape with a talking to.

Moments later Cairney went close to halving the deficit when he bent one towards the far post from the edge of the box, but it deflected inches wide.

On 67 Grant made his first changes of the game as Alexander Kačaniklić came on for Pringle and Cauley Woodrow replaced Smith. The swirling wind had made it difficult for the imposing frontman to have the desired impact with his knock-downs in the second period.

And it wasn’t long before the final switch was made as Scott Parker made way for Emerson Hyndman.

With quarter of an hour left McCormack sent over a corner that was met at the far post by Cairney, but he was unable to get over the ball and his header flew off target.

Forest were quite content to sit on their two-goal lead but they could have made it three on 77 had O’Hara not made a great block to stop O’Grady’s strike flying in.

It counted for little, though, as Mills headed in from the resulting corner to kill the game once and for all.

The Reds then made a double switch as Liam Trotter and Jorge Grant came on for Mendes and Oliveira, with Robert Tesche – who featured for Hamburg against Fulham in the UEFA Europa League – replacing Osborn soon after.

Defender Mills was denied a hat-trick in stoppage time at the end of the game as he watched his looping header thwack against the bar.

His former Bolton Wanderers teammate Tim Ream then headed goalwards from a McCormack delivery, but De Vries was equal to it in what was the final chance of the match. It was the first game in which Fulham have failed to score since the draw at Middlesbrough back in mid-October.
