Slaviša Jokanović secured his first win as Fulham boss in memorable fashion with a 3-1 West London derby win at Loftus Road.

Slaviša Jokanović secured his first win as Fulham boss in memorable fashion with a 3-1 West London derby win at Loftus Road.

Three goals in 10 first-half minutes for Fulham did the damage. Ross McCormack got the ball rolling in the 35th minute when he thundered home Tom Cairney’s fine pass, before Moussa Dembélé doubled the advantage on 40 with a deft header from Jamie O’Hara’s cross. Tom Cairney then put the travelling fans into dreamland when he tapped home in first-half stoppage time to make it 3-0 after Dembélé’s shot had come back off the post.

Substitute Tjaronn Chery pulled one back in injury time at the end of the game but it was only a small blot on Fulham’s copybook. Queens Park Rangers, it’s happened again.

Jokanović made three changes to the side that drew 1-1 with Derby County last time out and also opted for a change of formation, switching to a 3-1-3-2. Ryan Fredericks replaced Jazz Richards and started at right wing-back, with Lasse Vigen Christensen on the left. Michael Madl came in for his debut at centre-half, with Luke Garbutt making way. Scott Parker took the place of Rohan Ince in midfield. Former Fulham man Paul Konchesky was named in QPR’s starting XI.

In wet and windy conditions, Massimo Luongo sent an early header from Jamie Mackie’s cross straight at Andrew Lonergan, before Christensen jinked his way into the penalty area from the left in the third minute but saw his low shot turned around the near post by Alex Smithies.

Fulham were then dealt a blow in the fifth minute when Christensen limped out of the action and was replaced by Garbutt.

In the 12th minute an inswinging corner from Matt Phillips was finger-tipped away from danger by Lonergan, before Dan Burn did well to deal with a succession of set-pieces.

At the other end, an O’Hara cross flashed across the face of goal after good work involving Dembélé and Cairney, with a QPR player just getting a toe on it ahead of Fredericks. An O’Hara shot from distance in the 22nd minute was comfortably held by Smithies.

The game had entered a lull but burst into life when Fulham went in front in the 35th minute. Cairney picked up the ball in midfield and exchanged passes with O’Hara before playing a delightful ball beyond the Rangers defence to McCormack who hit a wonderful first-time shot past Smithies.

Rangers responded but brave blocks in quick succession by Fredericks and Parker denied Daniel Tozser on the edge of the area, before Junior Hoilett dragged a shot wide.

But it was 2-0 to Fulham moments later. Garbutt did well to keep possession from two QPR players just outside the box. He tapped a pass to McCormack on the left flank and the Scot laid it back to O’Hara who delivered a peach of a cross to the far post where the head of Dembélé guided the ball in from close range.

And things got even better as the first half ticked in additional time. A delightful ball by Garbutt sent McCormack scampering down the left. He slipped a lovely pass into the path of Dembélé whose scuffed shot beat Smithies but hit the far post. It mattered little as Cairney was there to slot home the rebound via the boot of a sliding Rangers defender on the line. The home fans were furious, the away support delirious.

Rangers made a change for the start of the second half as Conor Washington replaced the ineffective Sebastian Polter.

Madl was lucky to escape a booking in the early seconds of the second half after scything down Hoilett a yard outside the box. Parker blocked the resulting free-kick and Nedum Onuoha was booked for arguing the Fulham man wasn’t the full 10 yards away when the set-piece was taken.

Rangers made a second substitution in the 52nd minute as Hoilett made way for Abdenasser El Khayati but Fulham continued to carve open their opponents. It could have been 4-0 when an O’Hara cross was only cleared as far as Garbutt who lashed a right-footed effort wide of the far post from eight yards. Cairney then shot straight at Smithies after good work by Garbutt down the left.

Burn went into the book – although the home fans called for red – when he brought down Jamie Mackie 40 yards from goal after losing possession. Referee Tim Robinson rightly ruled that Madl was covering his teammate. O’Hara picked up a yellow shortly afterwards following an altercation with Mackie.

A superb save by Lonergan in the 70th minute kept Fulham’s clean sheet intact. A corner from the right was met by James Perch but his close-range header was brilliantly clawed away by the left hand of Lonergan. Smithies was called into action soon after, tipping over a cross-shot from McCormack.

QPR’s last change came in the 75th minute as Chery came on for Phillips, with Parker making way for Ince shortly afterwards.

Grant Hall was shown a yellow card for a foul on Cairney with eight minutes remaining and Hyndman came on for Dembélé moments later in Fulham’s final change.

QPR, to their credit, pushed forward in the final stages but, with Fulham’s defensive trio of Madl, Burn and Fernando Amorebieta were imperious. They finally found a way through in stoppage time when Chery slotted home with a left-footed effort after a corner wasn’t properly cleared.

It didn’t really matter, though, and the final whistle signalled a day to remember for the Whites as they secured a first away win since the victory at Bristol City in October.
