Fulham came up short despite a battling display in a 3-2 defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Fulham came up short despite a battling display in a 3-2 reverse at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Polish striker Michal Zyro netted twice within 12 minutes of his Sky Bet Championship debut, 10 days after joining from Legia Warsaw, to open up a commanding lead for Wolves early on.

The Whites responded well and Lasse Vigen Christensen pulled a goal back with a precise header from Jazz Richards' 24th-minute delivery. A series of fantastic saves from Andrew Lonergan prevented Zyro from scoring his third but there was no stopping Matt Doherty's outrageous 35-yard rocket in the 47th minute.

Fulham kept fighting in the second half and Ross McCormack's thunderous effort provided hope late on, but ultimately another wonder-strike condemned Fulham to a third straight defeat.

Head Coach Slaviša Jokanović made a single forced change from the Emirates FA Cup defeat at Sheffield Wednesday, with Moussa Dembélé replacing the injured Cauley Woodrow up front. The home side kicked off in their traditional gold and black with the Whites sporting their third strip of black shirts and infa-red shorts.

It was the visitors who almost carved out the first opening in the third minute, as Dembélé and Tom Cairney exchanged passes on the edge of the area and the Frenchman's cut-back was off target when perhaps he could have shot at goal. A minute later, Alexander Kačaniklić aimed a low cross at Dembélé . This time the 19-year-old attempted a strike but mistimed his effort and skewed the ball harmlessly away from goal.

The hosts wasted no time in showing Fulham how to finish when Jordan Graham crossed from the left and Zyro took a touch to control before scuffing a low shot into the corner of Lonergan's net. In response, Fulham began to move the ball quickly across the middle of Jamie O'Hara saw a shot blocked, before Tom Cairney's positive run and cross was hacked away from the danger zone.

But the Whites were punished by a missed offside call in the 12th minute. Zyro stole a march to race on to a ball over the top and added a composed finish to double his tally and Wolves' lead. Already with a mountain to climb in the 16th minute, O'Hara whipped a low free-kick across goal and watched the ball zip the wrong side of the post.

Lonergan kept the match competitive with an outstanding fingertip save to deny Zyro a treble a minute later, before Kačaniklić twisted and turned through the Wolves defence and watched his 12-yard drive deflect wide of Carl Ikeme's goalpost. Kačaniklić and Dembélé were bright sparks for the visitors and they combined on 21 minutes. The former found the latter and Danny Batth's desperate block was the only thing to deny Fulham a goal.

The Whites did however find a route back into the game in the 23rd minute when Richards delivered from the right and Christensen's accurate header nestled in the corner of the Wolves net. McCormack drilled a low effort across goal as Fulham attempted to build some momentum but Zyro soon gave them a reminder of his threat, slashing a wild shot over in the 29th minute.

Lonergan was called into action again on 32 minutes, throwing himself full-length to parry Doherty's 25-yard attempt around the post. The West Midland outfit's lightning-quick pace in wide areas continued to cause Fulham problems and Christensen went into the book for bringing down rampaging full-back Dominic Iorfa on 35 minutes.

Some composed Fulham build-up on 42 minutes almost ended in an own goal when Luke Garbutt's wicked cross was headed a fraction wide by the towering centre-back Ethan Ebanks-Landell. Lonergan was called into action once again on the brink of half-time with a point-blank save to stop Zyro's hat-trick moment as the Whites went into the interval with a foothold in the game.

McCormack struck the first effort of the second half with a 30-yard drive wide of goal on 47 minutes, but Wolves extended the lead a minute later when Doherty fired an extraordinary 35-yard bullet into the bottom corner after Fulham failed to clear a corner. Rajiv van La Parra almost stepped up to rival his teammate but saw a thunderous strike cannon back off the post, before the Dutchman robbed Dan Burn and pulled a low drive across goal on 56 minutes.

The condition were growing more difficult as heavy rain continued to fall, and Lonergan was the thorn in Zyro's side once again as the 23-year-old striker raced clear of Fulham's backline once again. Christensen's snap-shot tested Ikeme's reflexes before Burn was booked for hauling down Iorfa on 63 minutes. From the resulting free-kick, Lonergan pulled off an outstanding one-handed save to deny Ebanks-Landell and van La Parra turned the rebound over the goal gaping.

Jokanović called for a double change in the 72nd-minute with Emerson Hyndman replacing Kačaniklić and Cairney shifting wide, while Ryan Fredericks came on for Richards at right-back. On 75 minutes, McCormack rattled in a fine long-range strike after excellent left-wing work from Burn, as the Whites tried to up the tempo in the closing stages.

Matt Smith was introduced on 82 minutes in place of Christensen and the Whites proceeded to work the ball wide, as Cairney's cross flashed across goal and O'Hara worked Ikeme with a firm drive. But the final twist never arrived and Kenny Jackett's men held on to their advantage through four added minute to send the Whites back to SW6 empty handed.
