Fulham were carved open by a ruthless display of Birmingham City counter-attacking as three first-half goals proved decisive.

Fulham were carved open by a ruthless display of Birmingham City counter-attacking as three first-half goals proved decisive.

The Whites had appeared more likely to score the opener in the first quarter of an hour, but Stephen Gleeson’s 19th-minute strike and Paul Caddis’ penalty three minutes later dealt Fulham a serious body blow.

Kit Symons’ side had recovered from a two-goal deficit to defeat Reading 4-2 in the previous outing at Craven Cottage, but Jon Toral’s 31st-minute goal left the Whites with a mountain to climb at half-time.

James Husband’s sending off, for two yellow cards in the space of a minute, made the Whites’ task even tougher, but Fulham still responded through substitute Alexander Kačaniklić’s 66th-minute effort.

Clayton Donaldson made it 4-1 on 81 minutes, before Ross McCormack pulled another goal back in stoppage time, but substitute Viv Solomon-Otabor had the final word, netting with the last kick of the game.

Manager Symons elected to switch from the wing-back system which he had utilised for the past two games, partly due to Ryan Frederick’s absence through injury. The back four was shuffled with Tim Ream starting a right-back, next to a central partnership of Richard Stearman and Dan Burn.

Lasse Vigen Christensen was brought into the team to replace the missing Fredericks and started on the left of midfield, with Tom Cairney switching to the right. Scott Parker returned to the bench after shaking off a calf problem, while Shaun Hutchinson was selected in the 18 ahead of Ben Pringle.

Those in attendance observed a minute’s silence to honour our fallen servicemen ahead of Remembrance Sunday, and the Whites paid tribute to former manager Bobby Campbell, who sadly passed away late on Friday evening.

After a poignant build-up, the match burst into full flow with each team trading chances in the opening exchanges. Moussa Dembélé was tripped on the edge of the area in the second minute and McCormack slammed his free-kick into the Blues’ wall. Moments later, Demarai Gray capitalised as Jamie O’Hara slipped on the slick surface, and Joe Lewis was forced into an excellent one-handed close-range save to deny the young winger.

O’Hara soon made his presence felt at the opposite end, dropping a shoulder to create space only to drag his 25-yard effort wide of goalkeeper Tomasz Kuszczak’s post on seven minutes. The Whites continued to string together some nice approach play as Dembélé powered into the area and saw his strike blocked, before Cairney drew a low save from Kuszczak with a snap-shot from range.

Aside from an angled strike which Clayton Donaldson pulled well wide, Birmingham were pegged back the opening quarter of an hour. McCormack fired an effort at Kuszczak after fine footwork from Cairney in midfield, then the Blues suddenly turned the tide against the run of play.

Jacques Maghoma cut inside from the left and squared a pass to the onrushing Gleeson, who took one touch, lined up his 25-yard shot and struck an accurate effort inside Lewis’ right-hand post.

Within three minutes, the visitors were two goals to the good. Lewis was penalised for hauling down Donaldson, who ran clean through on goal, and the Whites shot-stopper was duly shown a yellow card. Caddis converted from 12-yards, rolling the ball into the unguarded corner, as Fulham were undone in three minutes of madness.

The hosts responded positively, instantly putting the pressure back on the visitors, but the stout defending of their well-drilled back-line kept the Whites at bay until the half hour, when Ream found space on the overlap and rifled a left-footed effort a fraction over the crossbar.

A minute later, it was three. Maghoma stretched brilliantly to stop the ball going out of play on and pulled it back from the by-line for Toral, who had time and space to pick his spot. He tucked the ball into the roof of Lewis’ net with ease.

Despite being dealt another blow, Fulham were soon back on the offensive and Cairney was bundled to the ground 30 yards out. O’Hara whipped the free-kick towards goal and saw it frustratingly crash back off the Blues crossbar and land safely.

The Whites continued to toil up until the interval but the Birmingham rear-guard stood firm. Kačaniklić was introduced into the game in place of Christensen at half-time, but six minutes later the task at hand was made even more difficult.

Husband went into the referee’s book on 49 minutes for a late tackle on Gleeson and, a minute later, a similar mistimed challenge earned the Middlesbrough loanee a second yellow and a subsequent red card.

Dembélé was substituted for Matt Smith on 54 minutes and, two minutes later, his flick opened up a chance for O’Hara, who could not angle his shot away from the goalkeeper. Gray shot over Lewis’ crossbar on 59 minutes, but the Whites continued to show a strong desire to get back into the game.

Smith was becoming a nuisance to the visitors. His low 62nd-minute strike cannoned back off the post, then his goal-ward flick eluded McCormack, who was dragged to the ground in the process, before Kačaniklić pounced on the loose ball at the far post to get the Whites on the scoreboard.

The goal lifted the crowd, and the Whites stuck to the task, as Cairney worked an opportunity and smashed a shot wide, before a similar effort from McCormack dropped the wrong side of Kuszczak’s goalpost.

As the match wore on, the ten men struggle to maintain their rhythm and the Blues began to utilise their extra player. Any hopes of a dramatic comeback were extinguished when Donaldson made it 4-1 in the 82nd minute after Lewis made a good stop with his legs to deny substitute Maikel Kieftenbeld.

With the result decided, there were a couple more twists in stoppage time. Smith blocked a clearance to allow McCormack to run through on goal and score, before Birminham's 80th-minute substitute Solomon-Otabor netted with the last kick of the game to cap a miserable day for the Whites.
