Fulham just fell short as a see-saw match against Burnley saw the league leaders claim a 3-2 win at Craven Cottage.

Fulham just fell short as a see-saw match against Burnley saw the league leaders claim a 3-2 win at Craven Cottage on Tuesday evening.

Sam Vokes had nodded the visitors in front early on following a corner, but the Whites drew level soon after when Ross McCormack crashed in after being played through by a sumptuous Moussa Dembélé pass.

Dembélé then got in on the act when he converted a fine Luke Garbutt cross from close range, and only a spectacular Tom Heaton save prevented Tom Cairney from making it 3-1 before half-time.

But Burnley showed why they’re league leaders after the break, first drawing level within minutes when Vokes converted from the spot following a foul by Cairney, and then going back in front when the division’s top scorer Andre Gray rifled in clinically.

The Whites huffed and puffed for a way back into the game and went close in stoppage time when Garbutt’s shot was cleared from close to the line, but the Clarets held on to secure a big three points in their promotion push.

Slaviša Jokanović made three changes to the side that claimed a draw at Reading three days earlier. Jazz Richards, Chris Baird and Jamie O’Hara all dropped to the bench, with Dan Burn, Scott Parker and Ryan Tunnicliffe the men coming in.

Fulham had the first decent opening four minutes in. Firstly, Dembélé worked some space before seeing his shot blocked, and then McCormack’s cutback from the byline was clawed away by Burnley goalkeeper and captain Heaton.

Tunnicliffe and Garbutt then each saw strikes quickly closed down as the Whites kept up the pressure on the goal in front of the Hammersmith End.

Despite starting the slower, Burnley looked to be clean through on goal in the ninth minute when Gray’s clever flick sent Scott Arfield in behind. He didn’t count on Ryan Fredericks having the pace to catch him up, though, and the wing-back was able to poke the ball behind for a corner.

Frustratingly, that set-piece did bring about the opener, and it was a very simple routine as Arfield swung a dangerous ball into the six yard box where Vokes was able to nod in with relative ease.

It was almost 2-0 from another deadball situation shortly after. Referee Mr Whitestone gave the Clarets a generous free-kick 25 yards from goal, and Joey Barton’s well-hit effort just missed the target.

But it didn’t take Fulham long to breach what has been one of the meanest defences in the Sky Bet Championship this term. Following some dogged play by Tunnicliffe, the ball broke to Dembélé who slid McCormack in with a perfectly weighted throughball, and our number 44 rifled it first time high beyond Heaton who stood no chance.

Things could have been even sweeter for the Whites in the 19th minute when Garbutt whipped a stunning free-kick into the mixer, but nobody was able to get a telling touch.

But it was 2-1 mere moments later, with another Garbutt delivery causing havoc in the Burnley box. This time his deep cross from the left evaded everyone to pick out the unmarked Dembélé, who just had to bundle home from a few inches out.

The visitors thought they’d equalised shortly after the half hour mark when Gray collected Stephen Ward’s cross and slotted in, but he’d clearly handed the ball and a free-kick was correctly given.

Cairney went close to a trademark dazzler in the 39th minute when, after the referee had played advantage following a nasty Barton foul on Parker, he opened his body up from distance and unleashed a shot that curled marginally wide, much to the sprawling Heaton’s relief.

With three minutes left before half-time, McCormack tried his luck with a free-kick from a full 35 yards out after being scythed down by Ben Mee. His effort was full of power and had plenty of dip, but Heaton showed excellent handling to claim it first time.

Only a stunning Heaton save prevented Fulham from going 3-1 up deep into first half stoppage time. Tunnicliffe won the ball 30 yards from his own goal with a brilliant sliding tackle, and ran half the length of the pitch before feeding McCormack to his right. His square pass put the ball on a plate for Cairney but England squad member Heaton made a superb reflex stop to palm it away.

Just a few a moments into the second half Burnley were awarded a soft penalty for an apparent push by Cairney on Barton. Vokes was the man who took it and he smashed it straight down the middle to level things up.

The home fans were convinced they should have had a spot-kick of their own in the 53rd minute when the ball bounced up and hit Mee’s hand, but Mr Whitestone waved it away. McCormack then fired a shot narrowly over the angle of post and crossbar from 20 yards out.

The Whites almost caught a break five minutes later when Tunnicliffe’s shot deflected kindly for Garbutt whose angled shot looked to be heading into the corner, only for Heaton to tip it clear.

The Clarets then made the game’s first change, replacing Frederik Ulvestad with Dean Marney.

Fulham had improved after a slow start to the second period and McCormack showed neat skill to cut the ball back onto his left foot in the penalty area, but he wasn’t able to control his volley as he would have liked and it flew over.

But then out of nothing Burnley went back in front, Gray managing to roll Madl before smashing a fierce strike into the far corner.

George Boyd was the first man in the book in the 70th minute for a nasty late challenge on Parker who had just shown him a clean set of 35-year-old heels.

In the 82nd minute Jokanović made a double switch, replacing Burn and Parker with Rohan Ince and Matt Smith.

Madl became the first man in white to be shown a yellow card three minutes later for hauling down Gray who had exploded away from him on the corner of the area. Barton fired the resulting free-kick straight into the wall.

Arfield was then booked for timewasting, something he wasn’t the only one guilty of since Gray had put Burnley in front.

In the first of five minutes added on Garbutt thought he’d equalised when he smashed in a low strike, but it was cleared from near the line.

That was the nearest the Whites went to snatching what would have been a deserved draw, leaving them sitting two points clear of the relegation zone.
