Emerson Hyndman scored a stoppage time goal on his birthday to earn Fulham a third successive 2-1 victory on Saturday.

Emerson Hyndman scored a stoppage time goal on his birthday to earn Fulham a third successive 2-1 victory on Saturday.

Lex Immers’ header had given Cardiff City a half-time lead at Craven Cottage, but Scott Parker’s great finish a matter of seconds after the restart hauled the Whites level.

The hosts had the better of the chances in the second 45, notably when Ryan Fredericks and Moussa Dembélé went clear, but in honesty either side could have won it.

Thankfully it went Fulham’s way, with Hyndman lashing home his first ever professional goal in the third minute of stoppage time to earn the points for his side.

Slaviša Jokanović made three changes to the team that beat Preston North End four days earlier. Tom Cairney and Tim Ream both missed out after picking up knocks at Deepdale and were replaced by Hyndman, on what was his 20th birthday, and Luke Garbutt. Richard Stearman also came in for Fredericks in a straight swap at right-back.

Cardiff had the first sniff of goal three minutes in when Tom Lawrence managed to work some space in the box, but Rohan Ince cleaned up impeccably to nullify the threat.

A few minutes later Fulham almost punished a wayward clearance when Ross McCormack fed Dembélé after the ball had dropped straight to him, but the Frenchman couldn’t control his left-footed half volley and missed the target by a couple of yards.

In the 10th minute, central midfielder Aron Gunnarsson ghosted into the area unmarked to connect with a cross from the left, but thankfully his flick was sent tamely into the arms of Marcus Bettinelli.

After quarter of an hour a Peter Whittingham corner was met by Bruno Ecuele Manga, but his powerful attempt flew over.

Decent chances were at a premium, as demonstrated by Craig Noone – scorer of a spectacular equaliser in the reverse fixture – who bent a speculative effort some way wide 22 minutes in.

The best opening of the game arrived three minutes later, and only a superb save denied Hyndman a goal. The young American won possession and then darted forward, skipped beyond a challenge and bent one towards the top right corner that David Marshall did well to beat away.

As the clock reached half an hour, Parker was felled 25 yards out. Of course McCormack went for goal, and he almost scored only for his compatriot Marshall to make another top save at full stretch.

Five minutes later Bettinelli was forced into a fairly routine save as he got down to smother Joe Ralls’ shot on the turn.

With four minutes left to play, the visitors took the lead with a goal of frustrating simplicity. Gunnarsson was allowed to drift into space in the left wing, and his dinked cross was easily nodded in by the equally unmarked Immers.

It could have been so much worse going into half-time, though, as Sean Morrison was allowed a free header which he cracked against the post.

At the break, Jokanović brought off Michael Madl and replaced him with Fredericks. Stearman moved into the middle to accommodate the switch.

And within 22 seconds of the restart, the Whites were level. Dembélé sent a great ball over the top for Parker to run on to, and our Captain hammered a top class left footed volley across Marshall and into the far corner.

A drop of the shoulder from left-back Scott Malone sent him in on goal in the 54th minute but he was denied by a last ditch Fredericks tackle.

The Fulham defender then launched an attack at the other end, bursting through with Dembélé for company. Unfortunately his square pass was slightly behind the striker, and by the time he collected the ball and had a go, his shot was easily blocked.

Malone was proving to be a significant attacking threat in the second half and in the 65th minute he broke through again, only to blaze his shot high and wide.

The Bluebirds then made their first change of the afternoon, replacing Tom Lawrence with Kenneth Zohore. Shortly after, Ryan Tunnicliffe made way for Lasse Vigen Christensen who made his first appearance in almost two months after picking up an injury at Queens Park Rangers.

In the 77th minute McCormack sent in a wicked corner that Fernando Amorebieta got his head to, but he flicked it wide of the far post.

Chris Baird then came on to give Parker a first rest in four matches.

Fulham were not content settling for a point and McCormack’s slide-rule pass almost sent Dembélé in, but Marshall read the danger and sprinted out of his area to clear the ball into the Johnny Haynes Stand.

With nine minutes left, City replaced Gunnarsson with Idriss Saadi.

Man mountain Zohore had proved a handful since coming on and he used his physicality to bundle into the box in the 86th minute, but Stearman – who had enjoyed a stellar game – got a toe on the ball to avert the danger.

Fulham then broke and Dembélé played a diagonal pass to McCormack in the area but Lee Peltier got over quickly to get the sliding tackle in.

At the other end, Morrison rose highest to meet Whittingham’s corner, but nodded wide of the far stick.

Dembélé almost won it for his side in the last minute of normal time, but his shot from a tight angle was parried away by Marshall.

In the third minute of stoppage time, McCormack took aim from 20 yards and saw his effort take a nick before kissing the cross bar en route over.

The subsequent corner wreaked havoc in the area as it flashed across the face. Fulham kept the pressure on and the ball dropped to Hyndman who took a touch before smashing a clinical strike into the far corner.

That proved to be the decider, as Hyndman’s first goal for the Club capped a superb win, and a fantastic birthday for the youngster.
