Fulham were beaten 2-1 by Ipswich Town at a sodden Craven Cottage on Tuesday evening.

Fulham were beaten 2-1 by Ipswich Town at a sodden Craven Cottage on Tuesday evening.

Any late arrivals in the stands would have missed the opening goal as the visitors went in front with a matter of seconds played when Freddie Sears burst through and finished smartly.

The Whites were not behind for long, though, as Ross McCormack smashed in a stunning long range free-kick that sailed beautifully into the bottom corner.

But it was the Tractor Boys who took the three points back to Suffolk with the decisive third goal arriving when Brett Pitman – who scored twice here for Bournemouth last season – cushioned a clever strike in via the post shortly before the hour mark.

Senior Coach Stuart Gray made two changes to the side that drew with Brentford three days earlier, with Dan Burn and Alexander Kačaniklić coming in for Scott Parker and Ryan Fredericks.

With around 17 seconds on the clock, Ipswich were in front. Sears pounced on a bouncing ball and burst beyond Burn and Richard Stearman before coolly finding the far corner with a right footed finish.

It could have been two on nine minutes but thankfully Ainsley Maitland-Niles’ 20-yard strike thumped against the crossbar after he’d shown good footwork to make some space for the shot.

It had been a nervy start by the hosts but Captain McCormack hauled his team level in style in the 14th minute. After Kačaniklić had unceremoniously been barged to the floor 30 yards out, McCormack sent the subsequent free-kick rasping into the bottom left-hand corner. Unstoppable from the Scot.

Sears was a bundle of energy on the left wing for the Blues and he tried to work an angle for a clean sight of goal just inside the box 21 minutes in, but Jazz Richards stood him up well and he sliced his effort well off target.

Cole Skuse then had a go after the ball was pulled back to him on the edge of the penalty area, but a couple of Fulham defenders threw themselves in the way to take the venom off the shot and make it easy for Andrew Lonergan to claim.

Arsenal loanee Maitland-Niles embarked on another jinking run on 34 minutes before drilling in a low strike, but Lonergan got down well to save and hold the ball, before Tommy Smith made a fine block at the other end to prevent Moussa Dembélé from connecting with a volley.

The visitors made a change at half-time, with Skuse making way for Kevin Bru after suffering a knock just prior to the break.

Both sides had half chances early in the second period, firstly when a scramble in the Fulham box just eluded an Ipswich toe, and then when Kačaniklić rifled over from range at the other end.

The 53rd minute saw Maitland-Niles and Daryl Murphy work a tidy one-two outside the area, with the former then trying a first time strike that went over by a yard or so.

And not long after Ipswich were back in front. Sears was allowed time to deliver a low cross and Pitman guided a lovely first time shot in via the near post.

Fulham looked for a response and McCormack created an opening in the 64th minute but opted to shoot when perhaps playing in Tom Cairney would have been the better option. His effort cleared the bar by some distance.

Two minutes later Gray made his first substitutions of the night, with Jamie O’Hara and Cairney making way for Emerson Hyndman and Matt Smith.

The imposing striker made an immediate nuisance of himself and within minutes sent a diving header from Tim Ream’s cross wide.

Just after the clock ticked beyond 70 minutes, Mick McCarthy withdrew striker Pitman for defender Piotr Malarczyk as he looked to protect his side’s lead.

Smith showed his aerial prowess again moments later as he sent Richards’ cross back across goal, but his header lacked direction and went some way wide of the far post.

With quarter of an hour remaining Sears went close to killing the game when he cut inside and arrowed in a vicious strike that missed the far corner by a matter of inches.

The Whites then made their final change as Cauley Woodrow came on for Kačaniklić.

Next, Dembélé saw another opportunity taken off his toes by a good Ipswich tackle, and from the resulting corner Smith headed over from Garbutt’s delivery.

Fulham continued to push and McCormack drew a save from Dean Gerken in the 87th minute with his shot from a tight angle following a Smith flick-on.

With a minute remaining the impressive Maitland-Niles was taken off and replaced by Jonathan Parr.

The hosts continued to press for an equaliser with a couple of corners in stoppage time – with Lonergan going up for the last one – but it wasn’t forthcoming and the barren run against Ipswich continued.
