Fulham gave Queens Park Rangers a lesson in total football on Friday night as we sent our neighbours back to W12 with a 4-0 defeat.

Fulham gave Queens Park Rangers a lesson in total football on Friday night as we sent our neighbours back to W12 with a 4-0 defeat.

Moussa Dembélé had given the Whites the lead with less than two minutes played when he nodded in James Husband’s inch-perfect cross, and it was two not long after when Ben Pringle capitalised on some slack defending to place one in the net from distance.

Ross McCormack’s sharp-shooting made it three before half-time, as the Whites completely dominated proceedings at Craven Cottage.

Rangers were improved after the break but they were still second best, and Fulham capped a superb night’s work when McCormack prodded in after Hoops defender Gabriele Angella had cleared against his own crossbar.

Kit Symons handed Ryan Fredericks a full debut at right-back in place of the injured Jazz Richards. Otherwise, it’s as you were from the side that were beaten 3-2 at Sheffield Wednesday last time out in the league.

Things couldn’t have started any better for Fulham. After putting the visitors under constant pressure from kick-off, the Whites kept possession following an early corner and Husband was able to whip across a sublime ball that Dembélé nodded back across goal and inside the far post.

The atmosphere was electric at the Cottage and the lively duo of Husband and Dembélé combined again in the fifth minute to tee up McCormack who lashed into the side-netting.

QPR had offered nothing going forward but a fine Matt Phillips ball looked to have sent Charlie Austin through on the quarter of an hour mark, only for Fredericks to read the danger brilliantly, allowing him to shepherd the ball away.

Tom Cairney then had a penalty appeal waved away, before Massimo Luongo side-footed wide as the two sides took it in turns to attack.

Rangers then got caught with their pants down as some sloppy passing on the edge of their box was all the invitation Pringle needed to rob possession. 20 yards out he still had plenty to do, but he skipped beyond Nedum Onuoha with ease before placing a low drive beyond Rob Green to double Fulham’s advantage.

On 24 minutes Dembélé won possession in his own half to launch a counter-attack that culminated in McCormack not quite being able to get a toe on Ryan Tunnicliffe’s cross. The pressure was unrelenting, and moments later QPR were indebted to Angella for clearing Husband’s cross that was about to set up Dembélé for a tap-in.

From that corner, Cairney was man-handled in the box in almost identical circumstances to the first appeal, but referee Kevin Friend saw no infringement.

Austin’s first effort of the game came with 28 minutes on the clock, but his tame shot from just outside the box was simple enough for Andrew Lonergan to make his first save of the game.

Fulham were in dreamland just the half hour mark as a slick passing move made it 3-0. At the end of it, Cairney’s exquisite ball sent McCormack on his way and the Captain made no mistake as he stroked a left-footed effort across goal to leave Green with little chance.

After their disastrous start to the game, Rangers made a change with 35 minutes played, with Jamie Mackie coming on for Tjaronn Chery.

As we entered stoppage time, Dembélé had a half-chance to kill the game once and for all after bearing down on goal having intercepted a loose pass, but he was off balance when he struck and his left-footer was comfortable for Green.

McCormack then had the final chance of the half, but he dragged wide from long range when perhaps the open Pringle to his left may have been in a better position.

The visitors made their second change of the game at half-time, with substitute Mackie replaced by Netherlands international Leroy Fer.

Rangers looked for a way back into the contest soon after the restart and for a moment it looked as though James Perch had fashioned a shooting chance after bursting into the area, but Richard Stearman made a great tackle to deny him, and even won a goal-kick in the process.

They went close again on 52 minutes when a loose ball was sent goalwards by Paul Konchesky, but Lonergan was able to grasp the former Fulham man’s header at full stretch.

It was the visitors’ best spell of the game but the Whites almost made it four moments later. Jamie O’Hara beat his man on the right before fizzing a low pass across the face which was cut out by Perch before Pringle could convert.

It really should have been 4-0 on 55 minutes when good play by Fredericks presented McCormack with the opportunity to skip inside, but he didn’t get enough behind his left-footed shot and Green was able to claim at the second attempt.

After Dembélé took a tumble in the area following a push from Onuoha just before the hour mark, the R’s made their final switch as Daniel Tozser came on for Austin.

The next goal that we’d been threatening arrived in the 63rd minute. Tunnicliffe's nicely weighted pass sent Fredericks in behind the Rangers defence and the full-back’s cross to Dembélé was poked onto the crossbar by the covering Angella, with McCormack lurking to pop in the loose ball.

O’Hara then made way for Lasse Vigen Christensen. The midfielder departed to a standing ovation from the home fans after pulling the strings throughout his time on the pitch.

Fans and players alike were thoroughly enjoying themselves and Tunnicliffe almost got in on the act with a 74th minute piledriver, but Green was able to palm it away.

Chants of ‘Ole, ole, ole, ole’ echoed around the ground soon after as Dembélé was taken off to be replaced by Cauley Woodrow, while Fredericks made way for Kay Voser. It was a fine evening’s work from both players.

For a fierce derby, it had been a well-behaved affair, and we had to wait until the 80th minute for the game’s first booking which was given to Perch who had scythed down Husband.

Half the crowd thought Woodrow had netted with his first shot with six minutes remaining when he collected Husband’s pass and unleashed fury, but it flew inches wide of the far stick.

Rangers’ heads had gone and fine attacking play from Woodrow and McCormack set up Voser for the first time strike, but his effort with the outside of the boot missed the target.

The fact that cheers went up from the home fans when five minutes of added time were announced said it all. They did not want the game to end! (Neither did I, this match report was a joy to write.)

Pringle had the final opening of an enthralling game as his bending effort deflected wide for a corner which was taken short to see the game out, with the referee promptly blowing up.

The emphatic win moved Fulham into the top half and to within a point of our opponents, having played a game less, as the majority inside Craven Cottage had their weekend get off to a fabulous start.
