Fulham’s long unbeaten run came to an end as Wolverhampton Wanderers claimed a 3-1 win at Craven Cottage.

Fulham’s long unbeaten run came to an end as Wolverhampton Wanderers claimed a 3-1 win at Craven Cottage.

A simple Ivan Cavaleiro finish gave the visitors a half-time lead, one they doubled promptly after the restart through Andreas Weimann.

Denis Odoi brought the Whites back into it with a fine strike just seconds after coming off the bench, but Wolves settled matters when Dave Edwards converted Helder Costa’s cross.

The defeat means Fulham remain a point outside the Play-Off spots, following Sheffield Wednesday’s loss the previous evening.

Slaviša Jokanović made just one change to the side that was held by Blackburn Rovers in midweek, with the returning Floyd Ayité’s introduction in place of Scott Malone meaning Ryan Sessegnon took up a deeper left-back position.

Stefan Johansen and Neeskens Kebano were both presented with a half chance within the opening three minutes, but on each occasion a florescent green shirt was on them quickly to block the shot.

In the seventh minute Fulham went close when Johansen spun an exquisite pass through to Ayité who’d peeled away to the byline. His cross found Kebano but it was awkward for the Congo international, and his side footer span the wrong side of the far post.

Wolves’ first effort arrived in the 10th minute when Costa cut inside and tried his luck from 20 yards, but it bobbled straight to David Button.

It was an open encounter and both sides had a chance in the 22nd minute. First, Ayité sold his man a dummy to create space on the edge of the box only for Danny Batth to make a superb block, before Lee Evans curled a yard wide at the other end.

Wanderers had plenty of flair going forward and Cavaleiro – who netted in the 4-4 at Molineux – went close to finding the far corner with a guided effort from an acute angle, but thankfully it flew wide.

Shortly after, the Whites worked a short corner to good effort when Kevin McDonald got on the end of Kebano’s delivery, but he nodded a couple of yards wide of the far post.

On the half hour mark Wolves looked as though they’d have a golden opportunity to break the deadlock when Ben Marshall’s free-kick dropped at the feet of Matt Doherty, but Tomas Kalas made a crucial intervention to quell the danger.

Marshall then went close himself with a powerful drive that Button beat away, with a Fulham defender on hand to boot clear the loose ball.

Wolves went in front in the 34th minute when Costa robbed Ryan Fredericks of the ball in a dangerous position and squared for Cavaleiro who couldn’t miss.

Fredericks tried to make amends four minutes later when he cut across the ball from distance, but it was never likely to trouble Carl Ikeme in the visiting goal.

Cynical challenges on Fulham players as they look to break has been a theme at the Cottage this season, and Cavaleiro soon had his name taken for crudely halting Johansen’s attempts at launching a counter attack.

Evans followed him into the book a minute later for a nasty lunge on Cairney.

Fulham were given a golden chance to equalise a minute before half-time when a sliding challenge on Sessegnon dropped kindly for Aluko in the box, but his first time effort was too close to Ikeme.

Jokanović made an attacking change at half-time, with striker Cyriac taking the place of holding midfielder McDonald.

But it was Wolves who started the second period on the front foot, and following two minutes of constant pressure Weimann fired in at the near post after being picked out unmarked in the penalty area.

In the 53rd minute Fredericks made way for Denis Odoi, and within a matter of seconds he’d halved the deficit. A Kebano cutback dropped to the full-back 20 yards out, and he took it under control before lashing it into the far corner to breathe new life into the home fans.

Wonderful work from Ayité then saw him roll his marker and square to Cyriac whose goalwards clip was deflected behind for a corner.

Wolves’ first substitution just after the hour mark saw goal scorer Cavaleiro replaced by Nouha Dicko, with Romain Saiss coming on for Marshall soon after.

The fourth goal was always going to be vital and unfortunately it was all too easy for Wolves to grab it. Costa danced towards the byline and cut it back to Edwards who had plenty of time to get on the end of it and plant the ball in the back of the net.

Ayité thought he’d reduced the arrears with quarter of an hour remaining when he diverted Odoi’s cross towards goal, but Ikeme managed to keep it out with various parts of his anatomy, courtesy of more luck than judgement.

Conor Coady was then booked for time wasting as he took five hours to deliver a throw-in.

The Midlanders then brought on George Saville for the excellent Costa, with the final substitution following as Malone replaced Sessegnon.

Kebano tried his luck with a 25 yard free-kick in the 87th minute but, while it was well struck, it was too close to Ikeme who saved comfortably.

Fulham’s misery was compounded in the fifth minute of stoppage time when Cyriac was hauled down by Batth when through on goal. It would have been a dangerous free-kick and a red card, but the referee decided there was no foul, moments before calling time on a disappointing afternoon for the Whites.
