A highly contentious penalty condemned Fulham to a 2-1 defeat at Burton Albion on Saturday afternoon.

A highly contentious penalty condemned Fulham to a 2-1 defeat at Burton Albion on Saturday afternoon.

Experienced full-back Stephen Warnock had poked the Brewers in front in the first half, but a lovely Oliver Norwood strike restored parity.

Shortly after the break, Albion were awarded a penalty, the reason for which remains unclear. Lucas Akins stepped up to restore his side’s advantage.

Sheyi Ojo hit the crossbar and had a goal disallowed as Fulham searched for a second equaliser of the day, but the 1,200 travelling fans had to go home disappointed.

Slaviša Jokanović named an unchanged starting XI from Wednesday’s win over Hull City, while there was a welcome sight on the bench as Rui Fonte returned from injury.

A rapid start from Fulham saw Stefan Johansen clip a neat pass into Neeskens Kebano who jinked his way into the box, only for his cross to be cleared before it reached Ojo.

The first shot came from the Brewers, though, when Jamie Allen skipped beyond a challenge before trying his luck from 20 yards, but it was simple enough for David Button, who then launched a counter-attack which culminated in Ryan Sessegnon connecting with Ryan Fredericks’ cross. His volley took a deflection on its way through, though, and bounced kindly for goalkeeper Stephen Bywater to claim.

In the eighth minute the Whites were camped outside our opponents’ penalty area probing for a way in, with Ojo eventually electing to try and bend one top corner which sailed not far over.

But four minutes later Albion went in front, and it won’t be one Whites fans will be keen to see again. A long ball over the top sent Scannell running into space, and after we failed to clear his scuffed cross, Warnock was on hand to pop into an empty net.

It perhaps should have been 1-1 on 17 minutes when Johansen outmuscled John Brayford to get to the byline and cut the ball back, but Norwood smashed his first time effort well over the bar from close range under pressure from several yellow shirts.

Whites fans had been less than impressed with the officiating in the first quarter of the game as referee Stephen Martin let a number of robust Burton challenges go unpunished. Therefore the travelling supporters behind the goal were left flabbergast when a rare free-kick was awarded – for the hosts – after Tim Ream cleanly tackled Marvin Sordell.

The set-piece was in a dangerous position just wide of the box, and it needed two brave blocks from Fulham defenders to quell the threat.

Just after the half hour mark Kevin McDonald drove forward with purpose and fed Floyd Ayité who dinked inside onto his right foot and bent a shot into the arms of Bywater.

But the Whites didn’t have to wait long for the equaliser as Norwood opened his account for the Club in style. Johansen pinged a ball across to his midfield colleague who took it down and lasered a strike into the bottom left hand corner from 25 yards out.

Burton responded with a fierce Akins shot that bent menacingly, but Button watched it all the way to make a comfortable save.

A slick move by the visitors then ended with Sessegnon fizzing a wicked ball into the box, but it had so much pace that it was nigh on impossible for Kebano to control his diving header, which went some distance off target.

Jamie Allen went close to putting his side back in front in the 37th minute when he had time to line up a shot from distance, with his left footed daisy-cutter striking the inside of the post and back out.

Brayford then hit an opportunist strike on his weaker left peg after the ball dropped kindly for him outside the area, and it drew a good save from Button.

Five minutes before the break Ojo went into the book for apparently diving. Johansen sent him in on goal and after rounding Bywater he went to ground. Hard to tell if it was a foul but to yellow card the winger seemed harsh.

Just before the break Fredericks spotted the run of Ayité and tried to play him in with a ball over the top. Ben Turner reached it first and sent a weak header back to Bywater, who just about managed to reach it before Ayité could pounce.

After Burton were awarded a mystery free-kick four minutes after the restart, the delivery dropped to Scannell whose shot deflected behind, and from the subsequent corner they were awarded a penalty for some reason. Even the Burton media team didn’t seem to know why. Akins stepped up and hit a tame effort that Button got something on, but it squirmed its way into the back of the net.

Moments later Ayité went down in the area, a seemingly much more clear cut penalty, but the referee didn’t give anything.

Fredericks then showed three yellow shirts a clean set of heels, but before he could pull the trigger Warnock put in a superb tackle to nick the ball away, and just before the hour mark Johansen drilled a 20-yarder off target.

Midway through the second period Tomas Kalas let fly from distance. His shot took a big deflection and then drew a sprawling save from Bywater, who eventually claimed.

Ojo must have thought he’d equalised on the 70-minute mark when he connected sweetly with Sessegnon’s cross, only to thwack the crossbar.

Fulham then brought on Fonte for Kebano, with Ayité moving out to the wing.

The Whites were knocking on the door and the next chance arrived when Ayité picked out Johansen, who sent his first time effort on the spin into the scoreboard above the goal.

Ojo had the ball in the net with quarter of an hour to play, but the linesman’s flag was up for offside, much to the surprise and dismay of the travelling fans.

Albion’s first change then saw Matthew Lund come on for Scannell.

A rare Burton attack saw Allen get teed up 30 yards out, but he sent his shot out of the stadium.

Fulham fans then got a first look at Jordan Graham, who replaced Norwood.

Kyle McFadzean got the game’s first booking with five to play when he went through Sessegnon who’d nipped beyond him. Graham’s delivery was cleared, further emphasising that Fulham would have preferred advantage to have been played following the foul.

Burton then replaced Marvin Sordell with Luke Varney as Fulham waited to take a corner. Graham picked Sessegnon out at the far post with his set-piece, but the youngster nodded the wrong side of the post.

That proved to be the final decent chance, as the Whites made the trip back south with a feeling of resentment and frustration.
