A sublime attacking display from Fulham in the Welsh capital secured a second victory in four days to cap a very Merry Christmas for the Whites.

Fulham won their second game in a row, coming away from Cardiff City with a 4-2 victory on Boxing Day – the Bluebirds’ first home defeat of the season.

It was a superb attacking performance from the Whites, with goals from Tim Ream, Floyd Ayité, Ryan Sessegnon, and Stefan Johansen securing the three points.

Slaviša Jokanović made just one change from the team that won at home against Barnsley—Denis Odoi coming in for an ill Aboubakar Kamara. This meant Odoi slotted in at left-back and Sessegnon pushed up to form a front three with Ayité and Sheyi Ojo.

It was a wet and windy atmosphere at kick-off but that didn’t seem to dampen the spirits of the away supporters, and the travelling fans who made the trip to Wales for Boxing Day were in fine voice.

The opening few minutes were defined by the greasy surface of the pitch more than anything else. The ball was skidding quickly along the ground and both sets of players were taking supreme caution to ensure that they had the ball under control, taking extra time to set up their passes and clearances.

In the fifth minute Johansen was brought down in the Cardiff box and it would be hard to blame his falling down on the slick pitch. He found a pocket of space and burst through it, seemingly through on goal. Bruno Manga brought him down, sliding straight through him, but the referee waved away the vociferous Fulham appeals.

The Whites wouldn’t have to wait long to start celebrating however. Seven minutes later, in the 12th minute, Fulham went ahead through a Ream header on the back post.

It was Ayité who started the move, jinking once to create space for himself after being played into the box. He clipped a cross into the centre, where Kevin Mcdonald nodded it over to the back stick, and an unmarked Ream glanced it home for his first goal of the season.

The goal sparked the Bluebirds into life and for the next 10 minutes Cardiff started to harry and harass Fulham in the middle of the pitch. Kenneth Zohore and Loic Damour were pressing from the front and there were several cases in which they fouled the Fulham backline out of an over-eagerness to win the ball back for the home side.

It was turning into a testy affair, with neither side able to truly establish themselves because of bitty, consistent fouling on the part of both teams. In the 27th minute Joe Ralls let loose a tentative effort from 20 yards, but Bettinelli was always behind it, doing especially well to smother any chance of a rebound.

As the first half progressed, the challenges started to become heavier and more pernicious. Tom Cairney was scythed down in the 29th minute and the skipper, wincing, needed a few moments to recover. Then in the 33rd minute Ayité became the first player to enter the referee’s book when he received a yellow for clattering into Nathaniel Mendez-Laing.

The many restarts seemed to be a part of Neil Warnock’s overall gameplan, and it appeared he had instructed his side to disrupt Fulham’s rapid passing game in any way possible. Besides the early goal, it seemed to be working. The first 40 minutes were mostly tetchy—littered with half-chances and 50-50 challenges—but, as the Welsh rain steadily drizzled down, the Whites were the ones asking all the questions.

In the 42nd minute Fulham found themselves streaming forward on the break, with numbers racing up to join the attack. The ball was sprayed out to a sprinting Ryan Fredericks on the right wing. But his appetising cross was cut out by Sol Bamba and the Fulham fullback did really well to get back and recover, hauling down Ralls to prevent a Cardiff City counterattack. He received a yellow for his troubles.

It was to be the last significant action of the first half, and the Whites went into the tunnel at halftime ahead 1-0. Cardiff were doing their best to spoil any Fulham rhythm, but the away side must have been pleased with themselves for being able to rise above the provocations and stick to their footballing principles, playing out of the back and setting the tempo.

The second half began much like the first half did, with the away side fashioning the better chances in spite of the home team’s cynical play.

First, in the 53rd minute, an explosive Fulham break found Cairney with the ball at his feet free on the left, just outside the box. He let fly, but his effort had a little too much curl on it and it ended up sailing a hair wide of the far post.

Then, in the 54th minute, Ojo was the next to get in on the action when he skinned his defender and lasered a low drive straight at Etheridge. The Cardiff ‘keeper was unable to hold onto the effort, but even though it was eventually hacked away to safety, it was clear Fulham were knocking on the door.

Two minutes later that concentrated pressure paid off as Fulham went 2-0 up courtesy of Ayité in the 56th minute.

Sessegnon was the provider this time, as he coolly got by his defender with a delayed touch. With the freedom of the box, the teenager did well to keep his head and find an onrushing Ayité, who powered it home to score a goal for the second game in the row.

It was a lovely goal, but Cardiff pegged one back just a minute later. In the 57th minute a Fulham clearance fell to Zohore who smashed in the half-valley from long range. It was a goal that Bettinelli could do nothing about and, with that strike, the home crowd came roaring back into it at Cardiff City Stadium.

In the 66th minute Bettinelli prevented them from going ballistic when he extended himself fully to tip over a glancing header from Manga. It was a wonderful save, and the Fulham keeper did extremely well to keep the score at 2-1.

Deciding to go for it, Warnock made an attacking double substitution in the 73rd minute, bringing on Rhys Healey for Damour and Callum Paterson for Junior Hoilett.

Jokanović responded by making a change of his own, replacing Ayité with Rui Fonte in the 77th minute.

It immediately paid dividends. Fonte, who had only been on the pitch for a few seconds, received a pass from Cairney on the right touchline. He turned his defender and played a wonderful curving ball into Sessegnon, who chested it past his defender with ease. The 17-year old found himself through on goal and slotted it into the corner with supreme nonchalance. 3-1 to the Whites, and the away fans couldn’t have been happier, bouncing up and down in the corner with pure joy.

In the 82nd Odoi became the third Fulham player to enter Simon Hooper’s book when he received a yellow for a tactical, but crunching, tackle in the centre of the park.

Four minutes later Jokanović made his second change of the game, bringing off Ojo—who had run himself into the ground—for Neeskens Kebano in the 86th minute. Moments later the substitute was wrestled to the ground in the area by Joe Bennett. The left-back had two arms around Kebano's waist but again no penalty was given, with Kebano perhaps punished for his honesty in staying upright and getting a shot away.

In the first minute of stoppage time the Head Coach made his third and final substitution, bringing off Sessegnon for Lucas Piazon. It was a heartwarming moment for the Brazilian, who hadn’t made an appearance for Fulham since his horrific injury against Leeds in August.

Even a late Paterson headed goal to make it 3-2 in the second minute of stoppage time wasn’t enough to derail Fulham.

As Cardiff pushed everyone forward to find an equaliser, it was actually Fulham who got the final goal. Running the vast majority of the pitch on the break, with no one around but him and the ‘keeper, Johansen executed a sublime little chip to ensure that the match ended 4-2 to the Whites.

It was effectively the last kick of the game and it was a fitting capstone to another fantastic attacking display from Fulham, who could take extreme pride in coming away with maximum points on Boxing Day.
