It was a tale of two halves as Fulham ended the calendar year with a 2-2 draw away to Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.

It was a tale of two halves as Fulham ended the calendar year with a 2-2 draw away to Hull City at the KCOM Stadium.

First-half goals from Jarrod Bowen and Nouha Dicko meant the Tigers went into the break with a two-goal advantage. But a second-half brace from Aboubakar Kamara ensured that the Whites did not come away from this game empty-handed, and that their spirited second-half performance was rewarded with a share of the spoils.

Slaviša Jokanović named an unchanged line-up, hoping that the players that performed so well at Cardiff would be able to produce a similar result in Humberside. This meant an agile and pacy front three of Ryan Sessegnon, Floyd Ayité, and Sheyi Ojo for the second game in a row.

Both teams started tentatively though and perhaps the congested holiday fixture list had a hand in how lethargic and leggy the opening ten minutes were. Nigel Adkins sent his team out to defend first and the Whites struggled to find a way through the compact lines of the Hull City defence.

In the 11th minute Fikayo Tomori sprinted through and clipped the top of the Marcus Bettinelli’s bar. Even if it went in it wouldn’t have counted, as he was whistled for being several yards offside. Playing right on the shoulder of the last Fulham defender seemed to be a key part of the Tigers’ strategy and it had mixed results early on—Hull were caught offside three times in the opening 12 minutes alone.

Chances were few and far between in the opening 25 minutes. In the 23rd minute Denis Odoi headed Jon Toral’s dangerous free kick over his own bar for a Hull City corner. After the first ball was cleared, the attack ending up fizzling out for the home side after the Tigers were again flagged for offside on the recycled cross.

In the 31st minute Bettinelli saved a Seb Larsson free kick from 30 yards out. It was on target, but the Fulham ‘keeper was behind it the whole way and did well to collapse on the ball to prevent any chance of a rebound.

But it would be from a set piece that Hull City found the opener. Odoi, after some concentrated pressure from the home team, conceded a corner on the left touchline. Jackson Irvine flicked the corner on and it fell to an unmarked Bowen on the back post, who was left with a simple finish. 1-0 to the Tigers in the 32nd minute.

Four minutes later Hull City had a second. Toral split Ream and Kalas with a well-measured through ball and Dicko raced in to slot it in high and hard, past Bettinelli and into the roof of the net. 36 minutes in and Hull had a two-goal advantage.

Jokanović sought an invigorated response from his team and hoped to force one by making a double substitution in the 40th minute. Ayité and Ojo came off for Kamara and Neeskens Kebano as the Head Coach reshuffled his front line.

It came close to having an immediate impact too, as Kebano headed just wide on the stroke of half-time. Kevin McDonald swung in a ball from the left and Kebano rose well to get any contact on it, but his glancing header dribbled agonisingly wide.

Just moments later David Webb blew for half-time and the Whites went into the tunnel looking for a way to regroup and come out fighting in the second half.

But it was the home team that sprinted out of the blocks the quickest. Just 30 seconds into the second half Dicko had another shot from close range. Bettinelli stood tall however and was able to palm it over. The resulting corner caused some panic in the Whites box, but eventually Ream hacked it away to safety.

Fulham were eager to prove they had plenty of spirit left in them though, and three minutes later they clawed a goal back from a well-taken spot kick by Kamara. It was Kamara himself who won the penalty when Michael Hector dragged him down in the box in an attempt to arrest his powerful, bullish run. The Frenchman stepped up and calmly slotted the penalty into the top-right corner to halve the deficit in the 48th minute.

It was just the response the Whites were looking for and Kamara’s goal lifted the spirits of the away team and their supporters. Suddenly Fulham were on the attack, and they nearly had an equalizer in the 53rd minute, but Kebano’s clipped shot sailed just over Allen McGregor’s crossbar. It was Sessegnon who played him through, and the substitute did well to get a testing shot off from such a close angle.

Fulham’s next chance came in the 60th minute. Kebano was wreaking havoc down the left, and he slalomed past two Hull defenders before rifling in a low cross. Tom Cairney arrived a fraction too late and it fell to Tim Ream on the back post, but the defender wasn’t able to rearrange himself to get a shot off in the time. The KCOM breathed a sigh of relief, but it was hard to deny that Fulham were really pushing themselves to find a second.

Kebano was a constant thorn in the Tigers’ side since his introduction and he had another shot on target in the 66th minute, this time from the right flank. It was well struck, but McGregor smothered the low drive.

Two minutes later Adkins made his first switch of the game, bringing Markus Henriksen on for Kevin Stewart.

In the 70th minute Bettinelli made a fantastic save to keep the game within reach. The ball fell to Bowen in the Fulham box but Bettinelli was able to extend every inch of his body to prevent what looked like a certain goal in what was the save of the match.

Both sides made substitutions soon after. Adkins brought on Frazier Campbell for Toral in the 72nd minute and Jokanović made his final substitution—Lucas Piazon replacing Odoi in the 74th.

Two minutes later McDonald received the first yellow card of the game for a challenge in the centre of the park in the 76th minute.

Fulham did not stop pressing for a goal and, in the 79th minute, it was Kamara who went close to finding his second. Piazon played Sessegnon into the box, but McGregor was quick off his line to poke the teenager’s effort away. The ball fell to Kamara on the in the box, but—with an open goal—he was only able to blaze over.

In the 83rd minute Adkins made his final substitution, bringing the goalscorer Dicko off for Max Clark.

Two minutes later Fulham had the equalizer and it was Kamara again. Piazon played a short pass to Kamara in the box and the Frenchman did ever so well to delicately make a yard of space for himself before lasering the ball off the back post and into the net. It was an excellent goal and it was no more than Fulham deserved for their second half display.

With five minutes of regulation left the Whites went off in search of a winner. Although they had a few corners, they were ultimately unable to fashion a clear-cut chance and had to settle for ending 2017 by splitting the points.
