Fulham beat Middlesbrough 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium, as a late Oliver Norwood penalty ensured the Whites came away with all three points.

Fulham beat Middlesbrough 1-0 at the Riverside Stadium, as a late Oliver Norwood penalty ensured the Whites came away with all three points.

It was the timeliest of goals for the away team, and Fulham can happily take the victory back to West London after a match that was filled with talking points.

Slaviša Jokanović lightly rotated his team after the Emirates FA Cup 3rd round defeat to Southampton, bringing Marcus Bettinelli back in at goalkeeper and reshuffling his backline. Sheyi Ojo’s return to the starting line-up meant Denis Odoi slid in at centreback, replacing Tomas Kalas. The Head Coach also chose Aboubakar Kamara to spearhead the attack in place of Rui Fonte. Lucas Piazon started his second game in a row as he edged back towards full match fitness.

The two sides had entirely different approaches to the match. Fulham looked to play the ball along the ground and to build from the back through a series of intricate, precise passes. Middlesbrough preferred brawn over brains, and sought to overpower the Whites through the physicality of Rudy Gestede and the straight-line pace of Adama Traore.

In the first ten minutes, the differing tactics cancelled each other out. Fulham had the lion’s share of possession, but the home team had the better early chances. Gestede went close twice early on, and looked good to score when he intercepted an errant pass in the sixth minute, but the striker scuffed his shot at the last minute.

In the 13th minute Stefan Johansen became the first person to enter Geoff Eltringham’s book when he received a yellow card for tripping Traore from behind.

Traore was the main source of trouble for the Fulham defence. They just couldn’t quite marshal him, and the battle between him and Ryan Sessegnon was endlessly intriguing, with both players exchanging bursts of speed with moments of sublime skill.

In the 25th minute, Traore jinked past Tim Ream and hared down the right touchline. In acres of space, he delivered a low cross that a sprinting Odoi was able to knock behind. The resulting corner ended up coming to nothing, but there was no doubt about who the most dangerous man was for the Teessiders in the first half.

But Fulham, when they had possession of the ball, were able to quiet the raucous home crowd by calmly stroking it back-and-forth between themselves. In the 32nd minute Johansen played a long, arcing diagonal to Sessegnon on the left wing. The teenager ambled into the box and smartly waited for Johansen’s follow-up run. The midfielder obliged, but when the ball was pulled back to him at the edge of the box, the Norwegian shot well over.

In the 37th minute George Friend was the first Boro player to receive a booking he when saw yellow for a late sliding lunge on Ryan Fredericks.

Then, one minute later, it was Kevin Mcdonald’s turn to have a try from long range. His ballooning effort also ended up in the stands.

But the Whites were starting to reassert themselves. In the 39th minute Sessegnon centred the ball for Ojo, but his low cross was slightly behind the winger. Ojo did well to get to his head on it, but the effort sailed straight into Darren Randolph’s arms.

Middlesbrough almost responded immediately. In the 40th minute, Gestede again found himself one-on-one with Bettinelli, and again the Beninese striker was unable to find that crucial touch. He dragged his shot wide, much to the anguish of the home crowd.

It proved to be the final chance of the opening half and both teams trudged into the tunnel knowing that there was still all to play for in the second half.

Sensing the game was there for the taking, Jokanović made his first substitution early on. In the 52nd minute he brought off Ojo and brought Kalas on in a move designed to push Sessegnon further up on the left wing.

Right after the substitution, as if on cue, Sessegnon skinned two Boro defenders and looked up to find Piazon powering into the box. Unfortunately for the away side, Sessegnon’s cross looped inches past the onrushing Brazilian.

After a scoreless first half, the game was starting to pick up steam as both sides dialled up the intensity. In the 55th minute Jonny Howson received a yellow for clattering into Johansen. Then Fredericks saw yellow in the 57th minute for a tactical foul on Traore.

With the crowd well and truly into it, Jokanović made his second substitution. Looking for a new angle in attack, he brought Fonte on for Kamara in the 58th minute.

The Boro fans were absolutely apoplectic two minutes later, when they were sure Kalas pushed over Martin Braithwaite in the box. The referee waved play on. Then, in the 60th minute, Odoi was the next player to be carded, as both sides struggled to keep their cool.

Tony Pulis made his first substitution of the afternoon soon after, bringing Britt Assombalonga on for Gestede in the 63rd minute.

In the 72nd minute, a quickly-taken Fulham corner almost caught the hosts off-guard. Norwood played the ball short to Kalas, who rode a deflection to poke a shot towards goal. But the angle was always against him and the centreback could only find the side netting.

Six minutes later Fulham came so close to finding the opener. Johansen played in Sessegnon—who looked livelier and livelier as the game went on—and the teenager shimmied the ball onto his left foot. But just as he was going to get a shot away, Ben Gibson slid in to muffle the danger. It was a frustrating moment for Sessegnon, but Gibson did very well to get back and get his body in the way.

In the 82nd minute Pulis made a double substitution, hoping to grab a late goal. Off came Traore and Braithwaite and on came Marvin Johnson and Adam Clayton.

Jokanović responded by making his final change in the 85th minute, introducing Neeskens Kebano for Piazon.

In the first minute of stoppage time Clayton received a yellow card for a cynical challenge on Kebano that arrested a quick Fulham break.

Then—in the third minute of stoppage time—Assombalonga clipped the Fulham bar after ghosting past Bettinelli. The fans couldn’t believe it. Boro were just inches away from victory.

But the late drama didn’t end there. Five minutes into stoppage time, just when the game looked like it was going to end scoreless, Fulham found the winner.

Grant Leadbitter fouled Norwood in the box and the Northern Irishman stepped up to take the penalty himself, cooling slotting it into the bottom right corner. He immediately sprinted to celebrate with the away fans, who were bouncing up and down with sheer, unfiltered joy.

Seconds later, the referee blew for full-time, bringing the curtain down on a wild and scarcely believable game of football. The players were hugging each other at the end, proud of themselves for playing until the very last minute.
