Two first half set-piece goals condemned Fulham to defeat in Wolverhampton on Friday night.

Two set-piece goals in the first half condemned Fulham to a lacklustre 2-0 defeat by Wolverhampton Wanderers on Friday night.

The left foot of Barry Douglas provided the ammunition on each occasion, firstly when his corner was powered home by Romain Saiss in the early stages of the match.

And the Whites were given a mountain to climb when the Sky Bet Championship’s top goal scorer Leo Bonatini flicked Douglas’ free-kick beyond David Button to double the scoreline.

Fulham huffed and puffed but failed to create any clear cut goal scoring opportunities against the league leaders, as they succumbed to a second 2-0 defeat in four days.

Slaviša Jokanović made three changes to the side that was beaten by Bristol City earlier in the week, with Oliver Norwood, Neeskens Kebano and Rui Fonte all coming in. Tomas Kalas and Aboubakar Kamara – after his red card appeal succeeded – dropped to the bench, while three games in seven days proved too much for Tom Cairney who missed out altogether.

Stefan Johansen found himself in the referee’s notebook inside a minute when he fouled Diogo Jota in a wide position, but the free-kick came to nothing.

A shot didn’t arrive until the eighth minute, and while Ruben Neves’ effort was nicely hit and had Button at full stretch, it flew wide of the far post.

But the opener was imminent and as simple as all the recent goals Fulham had conceded. Corner from Douglas, firm header from Saiss, 1-0.

It could have been two moments later when Jota bustled his way into the area only to drag his shot wide of the far post. Norwood had committed a foul in the build up and was retrospectively booked when Jota’s effort went out of play.

Kevin McDonald perhaps should have done better just after the quarter hour mark when John Ruddy spilled a Ryan Sessegnon free-kick. The ball span into McDonald’s path but was at an awkward height and he could only spoon it over.

Ruddy was called into action again midway through the half and this time did much better, comfortably claiming Ayité’s powerful long ranger.

Sessegnon became the third Fulham player to be booked for his first foul of the game, causing much frustration amongst the Whites press team as two Wolves players had got away with no punishment at all for similar fouls.

To compound our misery, Bonatini glanced in from another excellent Douglas delivery from the subsequent free-kick.

A hopeful 25 yard effort from Norwood followed but sailed over, before Kebano was denied a decent opening by a brave block inside the area.

The home fans took plenty of glee in booing Tim Ream after he went down. Why they did so is a mystery as Jota left a nasty foot in on the American long after the ball had gone. In fairness, though, the referee also didn’t spot the obvious foul.

The man in the middle was greeted by ironic cheers from the Fulham fans when he finally got his yellow card out for a Wolves player three minutes before the break, after Saiss wrestled Johansen to the ground.

Fonte had an opportunity to half the deficit in first half stoppage time, but elected to cut inside instead of shoot after bursting into the box, and the ball ran away from him.

At the other end, a last ditch McDonald tackle prevented Ivan Cavaleiro from having a one-on-one opening with Button, to keep Fulham in the game.

Former Wanderers hero McDonald became the final Fulham midfielder to be booked four minutes after the restart. His challenge won the ball from Saiss, but he was showing studs and was subsequently cautioned.

For the first time in the match, Wolves carved through the Whites in open play in the 50th minute. A cute chip fed Cavaleiro whose perfectly weighted clip picked out Bonatini, but the Brazilian shinned his volley well off target.

Ayité will be disappointed not to have at least tested Ruddy a minute later. Following a nice one-two with Fonte, he snatched at his shot and skewed it wide of the near post.

Some neat footwork from Kebano saw him skip beyond Douglas down the right flank, and the Scot was booked for chopping the winger down. Kebano was then withdrawn in place of Yohan Mollo.

When the free-kick was taken it was worked to Fredericks, but he leant back as he connected and sent his shot over the bar.

A great ball then released Cavaleiro into the area, but thankfully the forward made the poor decision to blaze over the bar, rather than cross to the unmarked Bonatini.

Jokanović made his second change just after the hour mark as Rafa Soares came on for Ayité. The Portuguese went to left-back, allowing Sessegnon to operate further forward.

It could have been 3-0 midway through the second period when Bonatini flicked a corner goalwards, but Button made a superb reflex save to tip it away. It fell into the path of Neves, but came at the Portugal international too quickly and deflected behind.

The visiting fans were incredulous when no foul was given as Douglas dragged back Fredericks as he looked to burst through. If the referee had given it he would have had to dismiss the left-back, too.

Jokanović played his final card when he replaced Fonte with Kamara in a like for like swap up front.

Neves should have wrapped it up on 72 minutes but took forever to get his shot away and Fredericks was able to block, with Saiss sending the follow-up into the palms of Button.

A sublime Matt Doherty cross then picked out Bonatini, who should really have hit the target with his header.

Wolves’ first change with quarter of an hour to go saw Bright Enobakhare come on for Cavaleiro, with Willy Boly making way for Alfred N’Diaye not long after. Their final switch saw Bonatini make way for Ben Marshall.

Fulham pressed for a way back into the game but Wolves defended resolutely and comfortably held out for the victory.
