Fulham recorded their seventh straight home victory as they beat Aston Villa 2-0 on a warm and sunny afternoon in SW6.

Fulham recorded their seventh straight home victory as they beat Aston Villa 2-0 on a warm and sunny afternoon in Southwest London.

Ryan Sessegnon finished off a free-flowing move to open the scoring in the 52nd minute and then Floyd Ayité ensured the points were secure with a magnificent long-range lob in the 71st.

Slaviša Jokanović made three changes to the line-up that drew away at Bolton, drafting Aleksandar Mitrović in from the start and reintroducing Thomas Cairney and Ayité into the starting eleven after their time off with injuries.

The first five minutes were all Fulham. Matt Targett and Mitrović both had early chances that flashed wide, Targett’s by a few feet, Mitrović’s by mere inches.

In the 15th minute Villa came close to breaking the deadlock. After winning the ball back in midfield, Birkir Bjarnason powered into the Fulham box and drilled a low shot towards Marcus Bettinelli’s goal. It ended up flying well wide.

In the 23rd minute, Sessegnon—who had been dangerous from the first whistle—sprinted into yards of open space, in pursuit of a Cairney through-ball. The teenager controlled it with one touch and cut a sharp pullback into the box. Mitrović and Ayité both rushed in, but neither could find that one crucial touch before Axel Tuanzebe hacked clear.

The first half-hour was a study in contrasts. The Whites were playing gorgeous football, cycling the ball rapidly—one touch and back, one touch and back—throughout the entire team, pulling the Villa backline to and fro. The visitors sat with ten men behind the ball, congealing into a stodgy mass, hoping to unspool on the counter and sprint up the field.

Throughout the first half, these differing approaches mostly cancelled each other out. Fulham were by far the more mobile side, nimbly sidestepping challenges and testing the Villa defence with probing, inquisitive runs. But the visitors simply clogged the midfield, throwing enough bodies into the centre of the park that it became nearly impossible for the Whites to manoeuvre with any freedom.

Right before Tony Harrington blew for the half, Ayité unleashed an acrobatic half-volley from the edge of the box. It was a graceful effort, but one that ultimately sailed harmlessly into Sam Johnstone’s arms. A few moments later, both teams trooped into the tunnel wondering how to find an elusive goal.

Perhaps seeking to start more aggressively, Steve Bruce made a halftime substitution, bringing Josh Onomah on in place of Ahmed Elmohamady, who had been struggling with a knock.

But it was Fulham who drew first blood in the 52nd minute. It was a pinpoint move. On the right, Ayité fed Ryan Fredericks who in turn served a delicious cross into the middle of the box. Sessegnon—who else?—swept the ball masterfully into the far corner. 1-0 to the Whites and chants of ‘He’s One of Our Own’ ringing out throughout the ground.

The goal only served to ratchet the intensity of the match up to another level. Tackles were now flying in all over the pitch, and every single player seemed to find another gear. And, in the 59th minute, Mile Jedinak became the first player to earn a booking when he saw yellow for a late challenge on Cairney.

Then Stefan Johansen became the next player to enter Tony Harrington’s book when he brought Onomah down as part of a professional foul in the 67th minute.

Bruce then made his second substitution of the match one minute later, when he brought Jedinak off and Lewis Grabban on.

In the 71st minute Ayité stole the show with an audacious goal from 45 yards out. Johnstone miscued his clearance, punting it straight to Ayité. Seeing the ‘keeper off his line, Ayité wasted no time in lofting the ball into an empty net. 2-0 to the Whites and the home supporters could scarcely believe their eyes; it was a chip of the highest quality.

Then, one minute later, it should have been three. Fredericks found Mitrović, who pounded a shot straight into Johnstone. Sessegnon latched onto the rebound, crossed it to Ayité, but the Togolese sriker nodded just over the bar. Fulham could smell the blood in the water.

In the 79th minute, after another stretch of extended Fulham pressure, Jokanović made his first change of the afternoon, bringing Mitrović off and Aboubakar Kamara on. The Serbian striker departed to a standing ovation, the crowd saluting him for his tireless work.

In the 87th minute both gaffers made substitutions. Bruce brought Keinan Davis on in place of a quiet Robert Snodgrass; Jokanović brought Lucas Piazon on for Ayité, who had impressed mightily on his return from injury.

But Fulham weren’t letting up. In the 90th minute Kamara became the latest Whites player to go close, when he fired a skipping shot in from an acute angle. Johnstone was able to get two behinds it, but the rebound caused some panic in the Villa box.

Then, in the first minute of stoppage time, Jokanović made his final substitution—the Head Coach replacing Stefan Johansen with Denis Odoi.

That was enough to see out the match and when the final whistle blew the Fulham players quickly ran in to hug and congratulate each other. It was a well-fought victory, and one they completely deserved.
