A brace each for Ryan Sessegnon and Aboubakar Kamara saw Fulham come from behind to secure an emphatic victory over Ipswich Town.

Fulham started the New Year with a bang, as they rolled over Ipswich Town 4-1 at the Cottage.

Ryan Sessegnon and Aboubakar Kamara got a brace each, as the Whites went on a scoring spree during eight incredible second-half minutes.

Slaviša Jokanović made two changes to the side that drew away at Hull City, Oliver Norwood coming in for Kevin McDonald and Kamara leading the line from the off after his Man of the Match performance in Humberside. This meant that Tomas Kalas dropped to the bench, with Denis Odoi shifting over to centre-back and Sessegnon sliding in to play at left-back.

It had been drizzling on and off before kick-off, but the first half was played under absolute sheets of heavy rain, contributing to a fast, skipping pitch.

Fulham were the more aggressive team early on, and they started the match with the bit between their teeth. Kamara, full of confidence after his brace the previous weekend, was stretching the Ipswich backline with his pace, and Stefan Johansen, Sheyi Ojo, and Floyd Ayité all took turns running into the space the Frenchman had created.

It was Kamara himself who had the Whites’ first shot on target. Ayité slipped Kamara in and, from a tight angle, the striker did well to get a low drive off in the 12th minute. Bartosz Bialkowski got two hands on it, but was unable to prevent the rebound from falling to Ojo; his shot took a massive deflection on the way towards goal however, and a grateful Bialkowski was able to come and claim it.

In the 20th minute a recycled free kick fell to Kamara on the left wing. He darted into the Ipswich box and, finding his path blocked, laid an intelligent pass off to an onrushing Johansen. The Norwegian let fly from the top of the box, but his powerful drive curled just wide.

Three minutes later Fulham found themselves with a free-kick 30 yards out after Johansen’s shirt had been tugged several times by Callum Connolly. It was Oliver Norwood who ended up taking it and his rasping effort was just a little too high to cause any serious trouble. Still, Fulham were asking all the questions and they were relentless in their pressing, constantly hunting for that opening goal.

In the 34th minute the home team’s momentum was temporarily stalled when Jokanović was forced into an early substitution, bringing Neeskens Kebano on for an injured Ayité.

Even though the substitution came through unfortunate circumstances, it helped the Whites find yet another attacking level. Kebano was a livewire from the second he entered the pitch and, in the 39th minute, he came tantalisingly close to creating the opener.

Twisting and turning as he entered the box from the left, Kebano jinked one time too many for Jordan Spence, creating a yard for himself. He then cracked a fizzing cross that just needed the tiniest of nudges to go in. And Kamara came ever so close to providing that nudge, but the striker timed his run a nanosecond too late. It was Fulham’s best chance of the half, and most of the home crowd was left wondering how it didn’t go in.

In the 44th minute Mick McCarthy had to make his first change of the match, replacing the injured Grant Ward with Freddie Sears.

One minute later the Tractor Boys improbably found themselves ahead. It was Joe Garner who got the goal, after he headed powerfully down from a free-kick that Martyn Waghorn looped into the box. 1-0 to the away team on the stroke of half-time.

It was a complete sucker punch of a goal, and the Whites headed into the tunnel wondering how they could convert their early dominance into goals.

As the South West London downpour softened into a mist, Fulham set about starting the second half with real offensive intent. Johansen in particular seemed to be set on driving the game from midfield and he tried to set a high tempo in the early minutes of the second period.

First he drew the opening yellow of the game, when Connolly had to resort to consistently yanking him back in order to arrest the midfielder’s run. Then he took a free-kick from the corner of the box, which—although he put plenty of venom into it—couldn’t clear the wall.

In the 54th minute Ipswich went down to 10 men, and deservedly so. Spence needlessly clattered into Kamara after the striker won possession back and the off-the-ball shove prompted Keith Stroud to send the defender off.

Looking to bunker behind the ball, McCarthy made his second substitution of the match, bringing Bersant Celina off and the defender Dominic Iorfa on.

With Craven Cottage whipped into a frothy atmosphere, Tim Ream was the next player to enter the book, when he received a yellow for barging into Garner in the 58th minute.

The Blues were doing everything in their power to slow the game down, and, after the red card, several Ipswich players signalled for treatment on the pitch, thus disrupting the Whites’ attacking rhythm.

Looking to counteract McCarthy’s defensive tactics, Jokanović made his second substitution of the game in the 65th minute, replacing Ojo with Lucas Piazon.

Two minutes later it was the Brazilian’s turn to receive a yellow, when he was carded for perceived simulation after going down in the Ipswich box in the 67th minute.

In the 69th minute Fulham found the equaliser they so richly deserved. It was Sessegnon who both started and finished the move. After receiving the ball on the left, the teenager flew through the centre of the park, before dinking it out to Kamara on the flank. The Frenchman put in a stinging cross to the back post, where a waiting Kebano miscued it, but the ball fell kindly to Sessegnon who confidently nodded it home.

With the home crowd in full voice, and the Cottage rocking, Fulham pushed forward for a second. And three minutes later, they found one in the 72nd minute. Norwood’s shot from a Kebano cross was blocked but dropped to Kamara, who made no mistake in placing it into the back of the net to strike in consecutive games.

The Whites barely had time to celebrate going ahead before they scored their third. Sessegnon—who was imperious in the second half—completing his brace in the 74th minute. This goal was all due to the footwork of Tom Cairney though, as the Captain just absolutely danced past three Ipswich defenders before squaring to the ball to Sessegnon, who was left with a tap-in. The home supporters couldn’t catch their breath, and chants were gloriously sprouting out, erupting one after another, from all four ends.

And then—when Fulham scored their fourth in the 76th minute to cap a wild eight minutes—the roof nearly lifted off the place. It was Kamara again, scoring a brace for the second game in a row. Fulham were breaking too quickly for Ipswich. After some rapid build-up, the ball fell to Kamara in the centre of the box and he wasted no time in getting his shot off, which sailed into the top corner via a deflection. Cue chants of “We want five” from the Hammersmith End.

After those near-insane eight minutes, the game understandably quieted somewhat. Looking to prevent further damage, McCarthy made his final substitution of the match, bringing Connolly off for Luke Hyam in the 82nd minute.

Jokanović then made his last substitution, bringing Sessegnon off after a heroic performance and replacing him with Rafa Soares in the 87th minute.

Then, in the first minute of stoppage time, Garner received a yellow for a nasty foul.

Still, nothing could dampen the party atmosphere at the Cottage, not even some late, cynical fouls from both teams. (Kebano, Waghorn, and Luke Chambers all received yellow cards deep into stoppage time) It was a fine old night on the banks of the Thames, and Fulham rang in the New Year with style, passion, and poise.
