Goals in either half from Ryan Sessegnon and Aleksandar Mitrović saw Fulham defeat table-toppers Wolves 2-0 at the Cottage.

Fulham extended their home winning streak to eight straight matches with a 2-0 defeat of Wolverhampton Wanderers in a heavyweight clash on a bitterly cold evening in South-West London.

Ryan Sessegnon opened the scoring in the 38th minute and Aleksandar Mitrović completed it with a wonderful individual strike in the 71st minute, as Fulham toppled the league leaders in a Sky Bet Championship classic.

Slaviša Jokanović reverted to the line-up that beat Aston Villa at home a week prior, which meant returns to the starting XI for Tomas Kalas, Ryan Fredericks and Floyd Ayité.

And it was Fredericks who had the first important touch of the game, when he slid in at the last second to block a goalbound Hélder Costa shot in the fourth minute. It was a crucial interception, as timely as it was athletic.

Four minutes later it was Fulham’s turn to have a try at goal. After some neat interplay between Tom Cairney and Matt Targett, the left-back pushed the ball into the path of an onrushing Sessegnon. The teenager cut inside the box and shaped up to shoot, but a huddled wall of Wolves defenders blocked the curling strike before it had a chance to reach John Ruddy’s goal.

Then, in the 13th minute, Fulham came within mere inches of breaking the deadlock. A deflected Cairney shot bounced directly into the path of Mitrović. The striker pirouetted and executed a precise little dink that sailed past Ruddy. But before Mitrović could celebrate, Wolves captain Conor Coady sped in to hack the ball off the line.

The first 30 minutes were filled with seesawing attacking football. Both teams wanted to play, and both teams wanted to play a sharp, aggressive passing game. These twinned mindsets meant the match was played at a full-throttle pace, with Fulham and Wolves taking turns to stream forward and scramble back, hurtling themselves to and from their respective goals.

In the 38th minute Sessegnon made sure all of Fulham’s first-half possession would count for something when he tapped in the game’s opening goal. Stefan Johansen began the move by slipping in Mitrović, who drilled a low shot in that had Ruddy at full stretch. But the Wolves’ keeper couldn’t hold on to the ball and—as he has been so many times this season—Sessegnon was in the right place at the right time to sweep home the rebound. The Whites drew first blood, and it unleashed something of a cascade at the Cottage, with all three home ends serenading their homegrown sensation in unison.

Seven minutes later referee Peter Bankes blew for half-time, dropping the curtain on what was a rabidly entertaining 45 minutes of football. The two teams rushed into the tunnel, eager to escape the frigid night air and plan how to make the best use of the second half.

Nuno Espirito Santo must have said all the right words in the dressing room, because Wolves started the second half absolutely flying around the pitch, moving with incredible pace and purpose. In the 48th minute Targett earned the game’s first booking when he had to drag Costa back in order to prevent a Wanderers counterattack.

But the Whites quickly steadied the ship, and by the 55th minute the game’s normal pattern re-emerged, with Fulham and Wolves taking turns in possession, all 22 players straining each and every sinew to try and find a goal.

In the 63rd minute, looking for the equaliser, Nuno made a double substitution, bringing Costa and Alfred N’Diaye off and replacing them with Diogo Jota and Morgan Gibbs-White.

Jokanović immediately responded with a substitution of his own, taking Ayité off and putting Sheyi Ojo on to face the side he was on loan at in the 2015/16 season.

In the 69th minute Barry Douglas became the first Wolves player to receive a yellow card when he clattered into a streaking Fredericks on the right touchline.

In the 71st minute Mitrović doubled Fulham’s lead with a sublime solo strike that showed off two of his best qualities—strength and skill. He received the ball with his back to goal, rolled one defender, body-faked another, and just lasered a shot into the bottom corner from 25-yards out. It was a wonderful move that combined brawn and ballet, and the home crowd responded with lusty cries of ‘Mitro! Mitro!’

One minute later Fulham almost had a third. Cairney dragged the ball back for Johansen, who was lurking at the edge of the box, but the Norwegian’s arcing shot flew millimetres wide of Ruddy’s left-hand post.

Then, feeling under pressure, Willy Boly became the second Wolves player to see yellow when he cynically brought Johansen down in the 75th minute.

Two minutes later, Santo made his final change of the match, taking off Roman Saiss, who had been quiet, and bringing Benik Afobe on in his place.

In the 85th minute, Jota squandered Wolves’ best opportunity of the match. The ball squirted to him after a tremendous recovering tackle from Tim Ream, but the substitute—with an open net—blazed over from five yards out.

In the second minute of stoppage time Jokanović brought Cairney off and replaced him with Denis Odoi. The Captain departed to a standing ovation and the fans didn’t stop singing until the final whistle, as the wind and the chants whipped up a fine old atmosphere on another joyous night on the banks of the Thames.
