Four second half goals from a ruthless Lyon outfit meant our week long trip to France ended in defeat.

A dominant second-half display saw Lyon defeat Fulham 4-0 at the Stade Pierre Rajon in Bourgoin on Saturday night.

Despite a 0-0 scoreline at the break, Lyon scored early second-half goals through Martin Terrier and a penalty from Diaz Mariano.

Slaviša Jokanović then made several changes with 15 minutes left to go but Lyon doubled their advantage through Maxwel Cornet and Terrier again.

The Fulham Head Coach recalled the majority of the squad which got Fulham promoted, to start against Lyon with a much anticipated first outing for Jean Michaël Seri.

In total there were eleven changes to the side that started against Fenerbahce, with those youngsters dropping to the Fulham bench.

Lyon provided a stiff test for Fulham with former Chelsea and Manchester United forwards Bertrand Traore and Memphis Depay starting up front for the Frenchmen.

Denis Odoi stood firm to block a powerful effort from Depay on the edge of the box in the ninth minute.

Odoi was again showing the form that secured him a place in Jokanović’s team last season when he rose highest to head away a dangerous cross from Leo Dubois, intended for Depay, in the 23rd minute.

The first booking of the game was shown to Seri for a 50/50 challenge on Ousseynou Ndiaye on the edge of the area, Depay took the free-kick but it was an easy save for Marcus Bettinelli.

A big test for the Fulham ‘keeper occurred in the 33rd minute when Traore found a bit of space in the box and turned onto his favoured left foot, aiming for the far corner but Bettinelli did extremely well to parry away the shot in his first start of pre-season.

Seven minutes later Lyon threatened again when Ndiaye played through Depay and he went around Bettinelli, but with no pace on the ball, Tim Ream got back to clear it away from the line.

The half drew to a close with little for Fulham fans to shout about, but there were promising signs from a Cairney-Seri partnership that was looking more and more threatening as the game went on.

Jokanović made one change at the break with Neeskens Kebano replacing Maxime Le Marchand and Ryan Sessegnon dropping back to fill the void at left-back.

Despite eleven changes from Lyon, Fulham were given a firm reminder of why they are one of the top teams in France after just one minute of second-half football when Terrier hit the post from a low cross.

A neatly timed pass from Cairney set Kamara through in the 55th minute, and opened up the Lyon defence but the Fulham forward drove his shot wide of the near post.

Kevin McDonald took to the field for the first time this pre-season when he replaced Seri in the 61st minute.

Terrier opened the scoring for Lyon three minutes later when Mariano looked like shooting from close-range, the Fulham defence rushed toward him but a cute pass instead of a shot saw the winger convert from close-range.

Stefan Johansen went into the referee’s book in the 68th minute when he brought down Cornet, who was on the break, just inside the Lyon half.

One minute later Steven Sessegnon replaced Cyrus Christie at right-back after the Irish international took what appeared to be a blow to the head.

Following a free-kick from the left, the referee awarded Lyon a penalty and booked Odoi for brining down Oumar Solet in the six-yard box, Mariano scored the resulting penalty in the 74th minute.

Jokanović then made seven changes with Mattias Kait, Matt O’Riley, Moritz Jenz, Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson, Marlon Fossey, Luca de la Torre and Ibrahima Cisse coming on for Ryan Sessegnon, Ream, Odoi, Cairney, Johansen, Rui Fonte and Kamara.

Cornet added a third in the 78th minute when he beat Jenz for pace down the left and poked his effort past Bettinelli.

Terrier got his second and Lyon’s fourth six minutes later after a nice pass from Kenny Tete found him free on the right for an easy tap in.

The defeat brought Fulham’s pre-season tour of France to a close as the Whites returned to London to continue their preparations for the Premier League.
