Fulham were held to a 0-0 draw with Reading at Aldershot Town on Saturday afternoon with new signing Maxime Le Marchand gaining his first minutes in a Whites shirt.

Fulham were held to a 0-0 draw with Reading at Aldershot Town on Saturday afternoon with new signing Maxime Le Marchand gaining his first minutes in a Whites shirt.

Jean-Michaël Seri was in attendance to see Fulham battle to a goalless first-half where Cyrus Christie and Marek Rodák produced moments of brilliance to halt the Royal’s attacks.

Fulham kicked on in the second-half, and despite a late effort from Rui Fonte almost finding the bottom corner of the goal, the Whites ended the game all square with Reading.

Slaviša Jokanović made four changes to the team that faced Crawley Town the previous weekend as Moritz Jenz, Matt O’Riley, Mattias Kait and Jon Dagur Thorsteinsson made way for Tim Ream, Neeskens Kebano, Tom Cairney and Le Marchand.

Ream was forced from the field of play after 12 minutes following a cut to the head at a Reading corner, he was replaced by Steven Sessesgnon with Le Marchand shifting from left-back to the heart of the Whites defence.

Rodák was forced into a tremendous save in the 15th minute when Andy Yiadom got a low effort away, the Slovakian got down and kept it out of the corner of the goal, a quick shot off the rebound then forced a goal-line clearance from Chrisite.

Less than two minutes later Yakou Meite broke free down the middle but Christie showed an impressive turn of pace to get back and make a perfectly timed tackle on the edge of the Fulham box, relieving the danger.

On the half-hour mark Ryan Sessegnon used some nice footwork to confuse the Reading defence and only a Liam Moore clearance stopped the right-footed shot from curling inside the back post.

Five minutes later Aboubakar Kamara got his head to Steven Sessegnon’s cross and despite some gasps from the crowd, there was no-one following up at the back-post to tap it in as it faded wide for a goal-kick.

Following a poor pass from Tiago Ilori, Kamara intercepted and played the ball to Cairney however the Fulham captain’s effort drifted over the bar, failing to trouble Vito Mannone.

Moments before the half-time whistle Meite let another chance go begging after the forward was left one-on-one with Rodák, but the Fulham ‘keeper made another assured save to get down and keep him out.

Fulham made two changes at the break with Jenz and Ibrahima Cissé replacing Le Marchand and Stefan Johansen.

Kebano began to trouble the Royals defence, his perfectly timed pass set Ryan Sessegnon free down the middle, but his shot took a deflection and hit the side-netting six minutes after the break.

Five minutes later Kebano was again involved, after a superb breakaway by the Whites, the winger had his effort blocked by Mannone, the ball then fell to Luca de la Torre on the edge of the Reading box but the American failed to keep his attempt down and it drifted over the bar.

Fulham made a host of changes on the hour-mark with Marcelo Djalo, Marlon Fossey, O’Riley, Kait, Thorsteinsson, Tyrese Francois and Fonte replacing Denis Odoi, Christie, Cairney, de la Torre, Kebano, Kamara and Ryan Sessegnon.

At the same time Reading brought on Paul McShane, Marc McNulty, Omar Richards, Chris Gunter, John O’Shea and Leandro Bacuna for Moore, Yiadom, David Meyler, John Swift, Tyler Blackett and Ilori.

Fulham had another chance seven minutes later when O’Riley’s corner was almost tucked away by Jenz’s head, however the defender’s effort fell the wrong side of the back-post.

Reading then made four more changes with George Evans, Andy Rinomhota, Pelle Clement and Sam Smith replacing Modou Barrow, Sone Aluko, Liam Kelly and Meite.

Taye Ashby-Hammond took the place of Rodák in the Fulham goal before Cissé forced Mannone into an unexpected save in the 75th minute after a wild shot from range almost snuck in.

With eight minutes remaining, Clement dribbled his way into the Fulham penalty area but when he came to pull the trigger he dragged his effort wide of the goal.

With time almost running out, Fonte dropped his shoulder and cut in from the right unleashing a fine left-footed strike, however it fell inches wide of nestling into the bottom corner of the goal.

Both sides failed to break the deadlock in the five minutes that followed and Fulham maintained their unbeaten start to pre-season ahead of a trip to France on Monday.
