Fulham went down 1-0 to Sampdoria at Aldershot Town thanks to a late goal from Gaston Ramirez.

Fulham went down 1-0 to Sampdoria at Aldershot Town thanks to a late goal from Gaston Ramirez.

Good defending from both sides ensured the first-half ended goalless with Maxime Le Marchand impressing the Fulham faithful in particular while filling in at centre-back.

Despite the introduction of new signing Aleksandar Mitrović with half-an-hour to go, the Whites failed to find a reply to Ramirez’s 79th minute strike.

After a non-eventful opening 20-minutes, Ibrahima Cissé almost opened the scoring with a sublime strike.

Good work from André Schürrle down the left saw the German international play a square ball to Cissé on the edge of the box and he hit it first time, just inches away from the top right-hand corner of the goal on 21 minutes.

Great defending in the 27th minute from Le Marchand saw him clear a dangerous cross from Ramirez after good work from Gianluca Caprari to set him free down the left.

In the 33rd minute Jakub Jankto was booked for a petulant foul on Luca de la Torre, as the young American was bursting though the middle he was pushed to the deck by the Sampdoria midfielder.

Five minutes later the visitors almost broke the deadlock themselves when Caprari got a curling shot away on the edge of the box, thankfully it fell just wide of Fabri’s left-post.

The half was brought to a close after another Fulham attack through Schürrle down the left was disrupted by a patient and well organised Sampdoria defence.

Slaviša Jokanović made one change at the break, with Stefan Johansen replacing Tom Cairney.

With barely a minute played in the second-half Fabri was forced to make a goal-line clearance from a Sampdoria corner as he got down quickly to his near post to palm it away.

Just after the hour-mark Jokanović made four further changes with Tim Ream, Neeskens Kebano, Jean Michael Seri and Mitrović coming on for Le Marchand,  Schürrle,  Kevin McDonald and Rui Fonte.

While Marco Giampaolo also made three changes with Alex Ferrari, Karol Linetty and Gregoire Defrel coming on for Omar Colley, Edgar Barreto and Caprari.

Fulham almost gained the lead when Marlon Fossey’s cross unlocked the Sampdoria defence as it fizzed across the six-yard box, but the ball evaded Mitrović first and then de la Torre at the back-post before going out for a throw-in in the 69th minute.

On 72 minutes both sides made changes with Cyrus Christie, Aboubakar Kamara and Ryan Sessegnon replacing Steven Sessegnon, de la Torre and Fossey for Fulham and Sampdoria brought off Emil Audero, Jacopo Sala and Nicola Murru for Vid Belec, Bartosz Bereszynski and Junior Tavares.

Five minutes later Valerio Verre and Ognjen Stijepovic replaced Jankto and Igor Kownacki for the Italians.

Ramirez eventually found the back of the net with a great strike from the right on the edge of the box in the 79th minute to give the Italians a 1-0 lead.

The last chance of the match fell to Kamara, who failed to connect cleanly with Seri’s pinpoint pass.

The Whites now return home to Craven Cottage to face La Liga side Celta Vigo on Saturday 4th August (kick-off 3pm).
