Fulham forced to settle for a 2-2 draw on the South coast after relinquishing a two goal lead in Brighton on an eventful afternoon.

Fulham were forced to settle for a draw after taking a 2-0 lead in Brighton on an eventful afternoon.

A late first half goal from André Schürrle gave Fulham a lead heading in to half-time before Aleksandar Mitrović doubled the lead in the 62nd minute. Glenn Murray halved the deficit and then picked up his second from the spot in the 84th minute to level things up with 6 minutes to go.

Following on from the emphatic 4-2 victory over Burnley last week in the Premier League Slaviša Jokanović made two changes to the side that ran out victors on that day. After picking up his first minutes for the Whites on Tuesday night, Alfie Mawson was inserted into the starting XI alongside Denis Odoi at the heart of the Whites defence. André-Frank Zambo Anguissa was also brought in to replace the injured Tom Cairney.

It was a beautiful day on the South Coast as the two sides made their way out onto the sun drenched pitch at the American Express Communiity Stadium.

The home side started brightly, pressing the Whites back into the own half, switching the ball from flank to flank but predominantly focusing their attention down the right wing. Two dangerous corners repelled in the first 4 minutes.

After enjoying their first period of possession that the Fulham faithful have grown accustomed the first shot on goal came in the 15th minute. Jean Michaël Seri received the ball on the outside the box and similar to last week tried his luck. However, his right-footed shot lacked power and was gathered by Matthew Ryan.

Despite direct and extreme pressure from the Seaguls the Whites almost pinched one on the break in the 16th minute. Luciano Vietto turned his man neatly in the centre of the pitch and surged forward. Rather than going for goal he unselfishly spread it out to the left wing into the path of André Schürrle. The German winger looked up and fizzed in a driven cross which was glanced over the bar by Aleksandar Mitrović.

The Whites were made to rue not capitalising on a positive spell when in the 24th minute Vietto felled Glen Murray in the box after a fortuitous break. In front of the Fulham fans it appeared Brighton would take the lead from the spot.

However, after a lazy run up Pascal Gross looked to side footed his effort into the bottom right hand corner. Marcus Bettinelli guessed right and produced a superb one hand save to parry behind for a corner. The travelling fans erupted and it remained goalless.

A frenetic first half calmed and chances were few and far between for both sides as the referee drew the first half to a close, the only half chance snuffed out by a superb tackle from Seri who prevented a certain shot on target by Anthony Knockaert.

As the pace of the game died down and the frantic Brighton home support subsided a delightful goal for the Whites silenced the locals even more. After some tidy and patient play Anguissa slipped a forceful pass into the feet of Seri just on the edge of the Brighton box. After a quick look up he chipped a picture perfect ball into the path of Schürrle in the heart of a crowded penalty area. The tricky winger made mistake and slammed a unstoppable shot into the bottom left hand corner of the goal.

An ideal end to the half with the Whites able to weather a spell of early pressure.

The second half started much like the start to the first half. But in the 53rd minute Fulham threatened once again. An unlikely individual at the heart of a courageous counter attack all the way from the edge of the Whites box. After reacting quickly to a pass aimed for the feet of Murray, Denis Odoi latched onto it and surged forward past numerous Brighton players. A cynical hack by Davy Propper was the only thing that could stop the Belgian 30 yards from goal.

Minutes later Fulham were fortunate to remain in front. A clever ball in behind the back line allowed a one on one for Solly March. With only Bettinelli to beat he blazed over to the delight of the Fulham faithful.

Then in the 62nd the elation in the away end reached boiling point when the Fulham lead was doubled. A moment to forget to Brighton captain Lewis Dunk. An arrogant approach to a lofted through ball was punished. The powerful Serbian bulldozing his way past a hopeless Dunk and smashing home on the second attempt after meandering in from the right wing.

A lapse in concentration at the other end gifted Brighton a goal against the run of play. In the 67th minute Knockaert attacked the Fulham left wing and cut it back expertly into the path of Murray. The striker made no mistake and slotted it home past the advancing Bettinelli.

The gaffer made his first changes of the match in the 73rd minute, introducing Stefan Johansen in place of a visibly exhausted Anguissa.

The changes made an impact, ensuring each Brighton player was pressed and badgered. However, with 8 minutes to the match was level. After surviving another lofted free kick Mitrović looked to control the ball under no pressure in the box. The ball grazed his shoulder on the way down and referee pointed to the spot. Murray stepped up and made no mistake.

With the crowd fully back in the encounter Brighton pushed and pressed in search of a late winner. However, nothing materialised and the match ended 2-2.
