Two own goals in four first half minutes condemned Fulham to a 2-1 loss in Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

Two own goals in four first half minutes condemned Fulham to a 2-1 loss in Burnley on Saturday afternoon.

The Whites created the better chances throughout, with the hosts actually failing to register a shot on target, but two pieces of misfortune proved the difference at Turf Moor.

Things couldn’t have started any better, with André Schürrle volleying in a beautiful opener after plucking Denis Odoi’s long ball out of the sky.

But things quickly turned sour, as Joe Bryan and Odoi both inadvertently found their own net in quick succession, consigning us to defeat in torrential Lancastrian conditions.

Claudio Ranieri made two changes to the side that was beaten at Arsenal on New Year’s Day, both in midfield. Calum Chambers was ineligible that day and subsequently made an immediate return, along with Jean Michaël Seri. The pair took the places of Tom Cairney and Ibrahima Cissé, who were named amongst the substitutes.

Inside two minutes Fulham went in front in immaculate style. Schürrle needed 11 shots to break Burnley’s resolve in the reverse fixture, but netted with the game’s first effort this time around when he brought down Odoi’s ball over the top impeccably before volleying over Tom Heaton and in via the underside of the bar.

Two Jeff Hendrick long rangers were Burnley’s first efforts on goal on the quarter hour mark, but the first was blocked by Maxime Le Marchand, and he smashed the rebound from that comfortably wide.

They came a hell of a lot closer on 18 minutes, though, when Chris Wood beat Sergio Rico to Phil Bardsley’s cross, with his glancing header kissing the outside of the far post on its way behind.

Burnley were putting the pressure on and duly got the equaliser with 20 minutes played. A cross from the left found its way to the unmarked Hendrick, who rifled in a shot which hit Bryan en route to the net.

They say you have no luck when you’re down the bottom, and that was evident moments later. Again Hendrick was involved, whipping over a cross that Odoi planted beyond Rico and inside the far corner. If there was a debate as to if the first one was an own goal, there was no doubt this time.

A mad game saw Fulham go within an inch of an equaliser in the 26th minute when Chambers met Bryan’s pinpoint cross and thumped a header against the crossbar.

Another delivery, from Schürrle on the right flank this time, created a chance for Ryan Sessegnon shortly before the half hour mark, but he headed over Heaton’s bar.

Chambers was then shown the game’s first booking for a mistimed challenge on Jack Cork.

Ranieri switched things up at the break with the introduction of Luciano Vietto for Sessegnon.

He almost had an immediate impact when Aleksandar Mitrović’s header from Bryan’s cross dropped to him in the box. He controlled well on his chest before rifling in a fine volley that had Heaton beaten, only for James Tarkowski to make a stunning block on the line.

Fulham were then denied what seemed a clear penalty when Charlie Taylor chopped Le Marchand’s ankles in the box, but referee Martin Atkinson didn’t see it.

As we ticked beyond the hour mark, Cairney entered the action in place of Bryan.

Cyrus Christie became the second man booked 20 minutes into the second period for a cynical pull-back of Ashley Westwood.

The Clarets’ chances were becoming few and far between but they fashioned one on 69 minutes when Ashley Barnes bullied the Fulham backline to nod a high ball on to Chris Wood, but his first time strike flew over.

Tarkowski and Mitrović had been enjoying a ding-dong battle all afternoon and the Burnley man was carded in the 72nd minute for a nasty challenge on our number nine.

With quarter of an hour to play, Vietto warmed the palms of Heaton with a well struck volley from the edge of the box. The England man beating it away without too much distress, though.

Neeskens Kebano then entered the field of play, replacing Schürrle.

With time running out, Christie burst inside and fired in a daisy cutter, but it was on his weaker left foot and Heaton saved easily.

Burnley ate up a few more seconds on 87 when they made a like for like switch up top. Wood walked off at a snail’s pace, with Sam Vokes taking his place.

Only three minutes were added at the end and Fulham were unable to fashion any further openings, with the mood of the away fans summed up by the horrific weather conditions which had only worsened by the time Atkinson blew up.
