Fulham’s relegation to the Championship was confirmed with a 4-1 defeat at Watford on Tuesday night.

Fulham’s relegation to the Championship was confirmed with a 4-1 defeat at Watford on Tuesday night.

An even first half ended with nothing to separate the sides, after Ryan Babel had cancelled out Abdoulaye Doucouré’s opener.

The second 45 started in the same vein, but after Will Hughes’ stunner had restored their lead, the Hornets took control.

Troy Deeney and Kiko Femenia also got their names on the scoresheet to condemn the Whites to defeat, but huge credit to the travelling faithful who did not stop singing throughout.

Scott Parker made two changes to the side which lost out to champions Manchester City three days earlier, with our Caretaker Manager able to call upon the services of Tim Ream and Aleksandar Mitrović once again.

Fulham had the first proper effort of the game eight minutes in when Tom Cairney swung over a deep cross from the right. Mitrović had the beating of his man in the air but couldn’t direct his header which sailed several yards wide.

There was a scare just after the quarter hour mark when Roberto Pereyra managed to bustle his way into the box, but Ream bravely threw himself at the ball to repel his powerful shot.

Two minutes later a lovely Ryan Sessegnon run was matched by an equally exquisite clipped ball over the top from Babel, but the 18-year-old was just unable to get it under control in the area.

Midway through the half André-Frank Zambo Anguissa showed good anticipation to nip in and win the ball high up the pitch. He fed Mitrović but there wasn’t enough power on the shot that followed and Ben Foster was able to make the save.

Watford then went straight up the other end and had their best chance when Deeney hurled himself at Femenia’s cross, only to send his diving header wide of the far post.

The opener was just around the corner, though, as Doucoure drove towards goals and unfurled a venomous left footer from 18 yards that nestled inside the post.

The Whites have shown they’re up for the battle under Parker and that fighting spirit was evident 32 minutes in when Sessegnon dribbled forward purposefully before slipping Babel in with a cute through pass, leaving the Netherlands international to outmuscle Adrian Mariappa and round Foster to slot home.

That goal breathed new life into Fulham who pushed to go in front, first when a bobbling ball in the box refused to sit properly for anyone, and then when Sessegnon fired into Foster’s grasp on his right foot from a tight angle.

Brilliant defensive work from Anguissa set up a counter attack with five minutes of the first half to play. It was eventually worked to Mitrović via Sessegnon, but the striker fired over.

Mariappa had his name rightly taken just before the break for a wild lunge on Mitrović after he’d skipped beyond him on the left flank.

The Hornets made a double switch at the interval, presumably with one eye on Sunday’s FA Cup Semi-Final, with Andre Gray and Daryl Janmaat coming on for Gerard Deulofeu and Pereyra.

Janmaat’s first action of the game was to wipe out Cairney with a high challenge, for which he was duly booked despite his best efforts to run away from the referee.

Fulham forged another decent opening on the hour mark when Mitrović slipped Sessegnon in one-on-one, but he had his back to goal and could only fire straight at Foster on the spin.

At the other end, Gray tried to take advantage of a rare Anguissa mistake when he took aim from distance, but it zipped wide with a deflection. We looked to have cleared the corner that followed but it dropped to Hughes who sent a stunning volley beyond Sergio Rico to restore the hosts’ lead.

Fulham looked to bounce back again, this time when Chambers – who had just picked up a retrospective booking – clipped a cross into Mitrović, whose looping header needed helping on its way over the bar by Foster.

But Watford quickly managed to establish a two goal advantage for the first time in the game, when Gray worked his way into the box and squared to the unmarked Deeney who was left with a simple finish.

Jean Michaël Seri then came on for Ream.

It could have got even worse in the 72nd minute when Jose Holebas got forward and drove a shot towards the far bottom corner, only for Rico’s fingertips to divert it wide.

Number four was on its way, though, sadly, with the ball finding its way to Femenia in the box who rifled high into the net.

The Whites should have pulled one back shortly after when Seri had a clear sight of goal, but Foster made a world class reaction stop to deny him.

With 10 to play, André Schürrle came on for Babel, and he was soon joined by Kevin McDonald who took Cairney’s place.

After Rico had made another good stop to deny Gray a fifth, Holebas was booked for a tasteless act when he barged into Sessegnon for no good reason.

But the result was already in doubt, and Fulham’s fate sealed.
