Fulham’s first game back in the Premier League ended in a 2-0 defeat by Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage.

Fulham’s first game back in the Premier League ended in a 2-0 defeat by Crystal Palace at Craven Cottage.

To say it was harsh on the Whites would not be too subjective a viewpoint, with Slaviša Jokanović’s side more than a match for the Eagles throughout the encounter.

Aleksandar Mitrović found Wayne Hennessey in inspired form throughout the first half, one which the visitors led courtesy of Jeffrey’s Schlupp’s clean strike.

A penalty appeal from Andre Schürrle fell on deaf ears after the restart as we looked for an equaliser, but Wilfried Zaha’s goal and the continued form of Hennessey meant our top flight return ended in defeat.

Jokanović handed six summer signings their debut, with goalkeeper Fabri, Calum Chambers, Maxime Le Marchand and Joe Bryan joining Cyrus Christie in a new-look defence.

Old hands Tom Cairney and Kevin McDonald were joined in midfield by Jean Michaёl Seri, while Schürrle took his place in a forward line that also featured Ryan Sessegnon and Mitrović – making his first appearance as a permanent employee.

The first decent opening of the game arrived via the right boot of Christie as the clock ticked onto three minutes when he rifled a low shot in from distance that drew a good save from Hennessey down to his left.

Nine minutes later Cairney slipped Sessegnon in. His shot deflected across goal and for a second looked as though might be turned in by Schürrle, but the German couldn’t connect at full stretch.

It was all Fulham and the lads nearly opened the scoring in style on 13 minutes. Cairney split the defence to send Schürrle in down the right who in turn centred to Mitrović. One touch to get beyond his man and power in a shot which was turned behind by Hennessey.

From the subsequent Sessegnon corner the big Serbian made the ball his again, and was unfortunate to see his downward header drop the wrong side of the post.

Palace’s response was a venomous strike from 25 yards by Andros Townsend, but Fabri was able to make a simple enough save.

For all the Whites’ dominance, it was the Eagles who nearly made the breakthrough on the half hour mark. Christian Benteke leapt highest to meet a cross from the right, but his looping header was kept out by a combination of Fabri and the crossbar.

That had given the visitors a lift and soon after we needed a crucial Christie intervention to prevent Zaha from having a free header inside the six yard box.

Stunning centre-forward play by Mitrović deserved to open the scoring in the 38th minute. After shrugging off his marker and taking a step, he planted a goalbound effort inside the far post, but his nemesis Hennessey was there once again.

The first booking of the game arrived five minutes before half-time when Zaha stamped on Seri in the middle of the park.

But the opener arrived a minute later when a reverse pass saw Schlupp get in behind the lines before lashing an unstoppable shot high inside the near post.

Patrick van Aanholt then crashed in a second from the opposite flank, but was clearly offside.

Van Aanholt was getting forward to good effect and had another go eight minutes into the second half, but powered his rising drive into the chest of Fabri.

With an hour played Schürrle nicked the ball beyond Mamadou Sakho in the area before being wiped out. Replays showed the France defender got nothing of the ball, but no penalty was given.

That was the forward’s final action of the game, as he made way for Aboubakar Kamara.

Salt was almost rubbed in our wound as Zaha found himself with a free strike at goal, but Fabri made a fine stop with his outstretched foot to keep it out.

Hennessey was having the game of his life keeping out Mitrović, and he did it once again on 64 minutes when he got down quickly to his header from Bryan’s lovely inswinger.

Our left-back then had to depart the action having taken a knock, and Jokanović made the progressive move of replacing him with forward Luciano Vietto as Sessegnon dropped into defence.

Schlupp became the second player carded when he prevented Vietto from taking a quick free-kick.

Benteke took on a shot first time from the edge of the box with quarter of an hour to play, but Fabri watched it all the way and made a smart stop.

Our two substitutes then combined to create a goalscoring chance as Vietto beat his man and played a square ball to Kamara. He looked to curl one into the far top corner but could only find the roof of the net.

A soft second then killed the game. Aaron Wan-Bissaka bundled his way down the right before playing a perfectly weighted ball to Zaha who rounded Fabri and slid home.

Seri then departed to a standing ovation after an excellent debut, with Stefan Johansen coming on in his place, before Alexander Sorloth replaced Benteke.

Townsend took aim from distance in the closing stages but was denied by a Fabri save, and was then brought off for Cheikhou Kouyate.

Sessegnon almost made it a nervy ending for Palace when he got on the end of Christie’s delivery. He sent his header back across goal but a stunning sprawling save from Hennessey clawed it away.

The Whites weren’t going down without a fight. Kamara showed great footwork to get beyond James Tomkins in the area, but smashed his shot from an acute angle into the impenetrable Hennessey.

Papa Souare for van Aanholt was then the final change of the game.

With Fulham pushing, Palace were finding space, and only a superb diving save from Fabri denied Kouyate a debut goal, to ensure the match finished at 2-0 rather than anything worse.
