Despite laying siege to the Cambridge goal in the second half, Fulham's maiden pre-season fixture ended in defeat at Motspur Park.

A slow start to the game cost Fulham in our opening pre-season fixture of 2019.

The Whites found themselves 3-0 down to Cambridge United in Saturday lunchtime’s behind-closed-doors outing at Motspur Park.

The second half was a different match entirely, though, and Fulham should certainly have had more than just Luca de la Torre’s goal to show for their efforts.

Next up is a trip to Portugal on Monday, where another private game will be played, in addition to a meeting with FC Porto.

The visitors went in front with the first chance of the match seven minutes in when a loose back pass was seized upon by Jabo Ibehre who kept his composure to bend his shot beyond Marcus Bettinelli.

Fulham’s first opening came on the 14 minute mark when Maxime Le Marchand spread a sublime angled ball over to Floyd Ayité on the right. He volleyed a first time cross into the area which deflected its way to Tyrese Francois, but the midfielder’s difficult volley went wide.

Ayité then cut in and tried his luck from the edge of the box, but his left-footed daisy cutter whistled inches wide.

Ibehre was next to have a pop from distance, but his 20 yard curler was comfortable for Bettinelli.

Ayité was the man looking to make things happen for Fulham on the right flank, and his deep cross in the 24th minute narrowly eluded the head of Jayden Harris at the far post.

The Togolese then jinked his way into the box before picking out Francois who saw his effort blocked. The ball ricocheted to Kevin McDonald but the height of it made for a tricky volley to execute, and he sent it wide.

United’s lead was doubled just after the half hour mark. A quick free-kick sent them free down the left, and Harvey Knibbs was there at the back stick to convert the ball across the face from Tom Knowles.

Things got worse a minute before half-time when Ibehre was there again to pounce on a loose bouncing ball in the area, thumping home from close range beyond the exposed Bettinelli.

It could have been four going into the break when Knowles delivered a superb free-kick from 25 yards, but Bettinelli made a fingertip save at full stretch.

Scott Parker made wholesale, but pre-planned, changes at the break, with only Nicolas Santos-Clase and Jayden Harris retaining their places – marking a good couple of days for the youngsters following the news that they had extended their contracts with the Club.

Fulham nearly pulled one back two minutes into the second half when Dimitar Mitov dropped Neeskens Kebano’s cross under pressure from Santos-Clase, only to recover just in time to prevent de la Torre putting the rebound in.

Kebano then rippled the side-netting with a low strike after cutting in from the left flank.

The Congo winger had been a livewire since his introduction, and he created the chance that brought Fulham back into the game just before the hour when he beat his man before picking out de la Torre, who finished coolly inside the near post.

de la Torre almost doubled his tally seconds later, but saw his shot hit the outside of the upright.

Kebano then worked some space for himself in the area as he shaped to shoot, but he tried to beat one man too many and was robbed impeccably by Harry Darling before he could pull the trigger.

Parker then replaced Santos-Clase and Harris with the more experienced Aboubakar Kamara and Rui Fonte.

Fonte was immediately involved, beating his man in the box with a Cruyff turn, only to see his shot deflect marginally wide. The subsequent corner eventually fell to Alfie Mawson who sent a powerful drive over from the edge of the box.

Matt O’Riley looked to reduce the deficit further with a sighter on 68 minutes, but his long ranger was straight at Mitov.

Kebano had the Cambridge back line all over the place, and he bought himself a yard with some neat skill on 78 minutes, but skewed wide of the near post.

With eight minutes to play, Tom Cairney almost made it 3-2, rattling the bar from 25 yards following good work down the right from Kamara.

Fulham were putting the United goal under siege, with Fonte twice going close – first when he was denied by a great block, and then when his swirling left footer dropped millimetres wide of the far stick.

Kebano then dragged one off target after bursting into a central position from off the left.

That proved to be our last chance of the afternoon, and although the scoreline was far from flattering, it’s certainly not a game that deserved to end in defeat for the Whites.
