Fulham and Oxford United played out a close-fought 1-1 draw at the Kassam Stadium on a warm summer's Tuesday evening.

Fulham and Oxford United played out a close-fought 1-1 draw at the Kassam Stadium on a warm summer’s Tuesday evening.

A peach of a first-half freekick from Anthony Knockaert gave the Whites the lead within 30 minutes but shortly after the re-start Oxford United pulled level courtesy of a John Mousinho header.

Scott Parker made 10 changes to the side that picked up a strong comeback victory against Brighton on Saturday afternoon. A number of players who featured off the bench for the Whites were inserted into the starting XI on a warm night in Oxford with explosive winger Knockaert making his debut for the Club.

Oxford started brightly and in the fourth minute a whipped cross was met at the back post by Mousinho. His right-footed first-time strike was well blocked by Cyrus Christie and the Whites were able to regroup.

After the early scare Fulham began to impose themselves on the match. Knockaert, a constant threat down the right wing looked sharp as he hugged the touchline and repeatedly beat his man down the flank, demonstrating a tidy touch and neat footwork. His pace & link up play were on display from the first moment he touched the ball.

In the 24th minute the skilful attacker was rewarded for all his fine work in the opening quarter of the match. Rui Fonte, who had been involved heavily early on was felled just outside the box after winning possession on the halfway line and slaloming forward. The Frenchman stepped up and calmly swung a perfect shot into the bottom right-hand corner past Simon Eastwood in the Oxford net.

With the deadlock broken the Whites began to assert their authority on the encounter and controlled proceedings. The hosts simply had no answer for Knockaert and his direct nature and on a few occasions his teasing crosses were inches from being met by a Fulham attacker arriving late in the box. Delightful crosses into the danger area in the Oxford box.

As the referee brought the first half to a close the Whites were comfortable and looking strong.

Scott Parker made no changes to his side at the start of the second half and within minutes of the re-start Luca de la Torre was found unmarked in the area by Knockaert. After taking a touch to steady the ball he looked to lash one in the bottom corner. However, his drive was blocked and hooked behind for a corner. A positive start to the second half.

The screw continued to be turned and in the 50th minute Cyrus Christie was picked out on the edge of the Oxford box. A free-flowing counter attack culminating in the imposing fullback cracking the base of the post with a left-footed effort. Two chances to double the lead and pull away from an opposition contented to keep men behind the ball and play defensively.

In the 58th minute Oxford United drew level very much against the run of play. It was Mousinho once again who caused issues from a set piece. The combative defender met a freekick swung in from the right flank and his header glanced off the post and found the back of the net. A contentious goal in some ways as the freekick awarded leading to the goal seemed lenient.

As both teams made changes the match lost its fluency and the encounter remained in deadlock. However, in the 86th minute Marek Rodák produced a superb save to ensure the match remained even.

After controlling the ball expertly at the back post, Kyran Lofthouse directed a neat left-footed shot towards the bottom corner. Rodák got down quickly to his left at close range & tipped the effort on to the post. A brilliant save from a keeper who had been untroubled for large periods of the tight match.

That proved to be the final chance for either side and the score remained in deadlock. Fulham will round off their pre-season preparations with a home match against West Ham United this coming Saturday at Craven Cottage.
