Fulham made it three wins on the spin with a 4-0 dismantling of Millwall at Craven Cottage on Wednesday evening.

Fulham made it three wins on the spin with a 4-0 dismantling of Millwall at Craven Cottage on Wednesday evening.

Two goals arrived in either half, with Ivan Cavaleiro carrying on where he left off in Huddersfield with a stunning right footer, before he teed up Anthony Knockaert to double the lead.

An Aleksandar Mitrović penalty then added further breathing space for the Whites in the second period, before Cavaleiro added some gloss to the scoreline when he rounded the visiting goalkeeper after being picked out by Tom Cairney.

Following up Friday’s win at the John Smith’s Stadium, Scott Parker was able to name an unchanged side for our first London derby of the season.

After a tense opening 10 minutes, Parker swapped his wingers around, and it immediately began to cause Millwall problems, with Knockaert and Cavaleiro each having some joy in getting beyond their man and wrapping their stronger foot around the ball. The first few crosses were cut out by the centre-backs, but in the 13th minute Knockaert expertly picked out Mitrović, whose placed header drew a good save from Bartosz Bialkowski.

The lively pair of Knockaert and Cavaleiro soon swapped back to their original positions, and moments later it led to the opener. Cairney found Cavaleiro back on the left wing, and the Portuguese cut inside into the area, beating a man before lashing an effort beyond the outstretched Bialkowski.

The first cards were dished out in the 25th minute, a yellow apiece for Mitrović and Jake Cooper for an incident off the ball. Knockaert joined them in the book three minutes later when he lost his cool at referee Mr Bond when what seemed a clear foul on the Frenchman went unpunished.

Knockaert’s mood would have changed quickly from fury to delight soon after, though, as he stooped bravely to get beyond the Millwall centre-backs to nod in Cavaleiro’s cross from the left for his first goal for the Club at the end of a fine team move.

The match had not gone to plan for the Lions at all, and manager Neil Harris responded with an early change, replacing Jiri Skalak with Shane Ferguson.

With the stats showing Fulham having 89 per cent of the ball in the opening 45, it was clear Millwall needed to change something, and Harris shuffled his pack further at half-time with the introduction of Matt Smith in place of midfielder Shaun Williams.

The former Whites frontman – who received a warm reception from the home fans – had a chance within two minutes, but hit tamely at Marcus Bettinelli when well placed.

The Lions had started the second half on the front foot but it was nearly Fulham who scored next when Steven Sessegnon’s cross took a deflection and kissed the top of the crossbar.

That third goal was just around the corner, though. Mitrović did brilliantly to control Harry Arter’s shot before rounding Bialkowski who wiped him out. The big man then stepped up to thump home the penalty for his third goal in as many matches.

Things then got even better for Fulham when Cairney sent a beautiful ball over the top to Cavaleiro who had sprung the offside trap. He then skipped beyond Bialkowski and was left with a tap-in to kill the game dead, if it wasn’t already.

The scoreline gave Parker an opportunity to rest players ahead of Saturday’s meeting with Nottingham Forest, and with a quarter of the game to play he brought Bobby Decordova-Reid on for Cairney.

Cavaleiro was understandably hungry for a hat-trick, but his venomous strike from 20 yards was comfortable enough for Bialkowski.

Arter was next to be withdrawn after another all-action display, with Kevin McDonald coming on in his place, before Cavaleiro made way for Aboubakar Kamara.

Tom Bradshaw thought he’d nodded in a consolation for the Lions with nine minutes to play, but he had strayed offside and so Fulham’s clean sheet remained intact on what was a superb night for the team.
