Dan Burn's Defensive Tips

Fulham centre-back Dan Burn gives his five top defensive tips…

1 Positioning

“It’s key to being a defender. If you don’t have good positioning, then the strikers will find gaps where they can exploit you. When you play at a high level, if you’re positioning is a tiny bit out, you’ll get punished.”

2 Move Your Feet

“This is important for when players are running at you. Because I’m tall, it’s harder for someone of my height to adjust yourself but when you’re left in a one-on-one situation, if you can’t move your feet, then your opponent is getting past.”

3 Heading

“As a centre-half, you have to make quite a few headers during a game. Timing is important here, you need to catch the ball at its highest point to get as much distance on it as possible.”

4 Play With The Ball

“It was probably different for a centre-half 10 or 15 years ago, but if you want to be able to play at the highest level, you need to be comfortable with the ball and have the confidence to go forward with it and make something happen. It’s a team game now, the attackers have to defend and the defenders have to attack.”

5 Timing

“Timing of anything is crucial - timing of your pass, your jump and your tackles have to be key. The higher you go up the leagues, the finer the margins are for error. If you’re a little bit out of time, you’re in trouble.”
