Here in the FFC Kidszone we uncover the Fulham heroes of the past – the players that your older brothers and sisters, parents and even grandparents used to cheer on. Here, we reveal the talents of Edwin Van der Sar.

WHEN? 2001-2005

POSITION: Goalkeeper

TOP ATTRIBUTES: Great reflexes, agility and composure

PLAYED A BIT LIKE: Mark Schwarzer

Fulham pulled off a transfer shock when signing the big Dutchman from Italian giants Juventus, for Van der Sar was widely considered as one of the best goalkeepers in the world at the time. At first club Ajax, he won the European Cup (now the UEFA Champions League) in 1995 following a 1-0 victory over AC Milan.

He spent just two years in Italy, before arriving at Craven Cottage for a then record £7m and just in time for the Club’s debut Premier League season. Van der Sar became a popular player on the banks of the Thames and is without doubt one of our best-ever keepers. He joined Manchester United in June 2005 – where he won four Premier League titles and another Champions League trophy.

DID YOU KNOW? Van der Sar won 130 caps for Holland and played at four European Championships and two World Cups.
