The Whites finished off the season in style as they put six past Norwich with a fine display, the like of which had not been seen at the Cottage since Fulham’s all-conquering promotion to the top flight.

Chris Coleman made two changes to the side that won so impressively at Ewood Park the previous weekend.  In came Papa Bouba Diop for Mark Pembridge whilst, in defence, Carlos Bocanegra replaced the suspended Liam Rosenior.

After a tense start Fulham opened the scoring through the prolific Brian McBride.  The American striker, who has been in inspirational form of late, latched on to a delicate Lee Clark through ball and fired a low, hard shot through the legs of Robert Green.

Shortly after, the Canaries had a penalty appeal turned down when McKenzie’s progress into the area was blocked by the sizable frame of Zat Knight.

Although the visitors were enjoying the majority of possession it was Fulham, through their quick counter attacks, who were looking the more threatening side. However as the first half developed, the match swung between periods of equal possession and spells where the Whites kicked up a gear and put the Norwich goal under serious threat.

Fulham doubled their lead on 32 minutes through a wonderful Papa Bouba Diop free kick. The giant midfielder bent a fine shot into the top corner, showing that there’s more in his locker then just the odd 35 yard screamer.

With Norwich still looking to get forward in search of a goal, the space was there for Fulham to exploit. And exploit it they did. Steed Malbranque, Luis Boa Morte and McBride all tried their luck. With McBride in particular coming closest on 44 minutes when the American managed to get on to the end of a low Volz cross and diverted his angled shot on to the bar.

Fulham were back on the score sheet just 9 minutes into the second half.  The pressure had been building on the Norwich goal when a Steed Malbranque shot deflected wide for a corner.  The Canaries’ back line failed to deal with the delivery effectively and the ball fell to Zat Knight on the edge of the box.  The big central defender lashed a fierce shot past Green with the outside of his foot.

The goal prompted Nigel Worthington to make his final change of the match, replacing David Bentley with Mathias Svensson.  The change appeared to give the visiting team an injection of energy as first Svensson tried to beat Van der Sar at the near post with a thunderous shot before the Dutch keeper was again called into action.

Luis Boa Morte supplied Steed Malbranque in the 71st minute for the Frenchman to score Fulham’s fourth of the afternoon.  The Portuguese winger could well have got on the score sheet himself but his touch around Robert Green made the angle too tight for the finish.  Instead, he cut the ball back into the path of Malbranque who finished coolly.

The scoring wasn’t over there however.  On 85 minutes Malbranque fed the ball through to McBride on the left hand side of the area and the American finished for the second time past Green,

Substitute Andrew Cole rounded off the scoring when he skilfully flicked McBride’s centre past Green.
