Chris Coleman elected to start with a 4-4-2 formation for the visit of Portsmouth, with Luis Boa Morte moving up front to partner Andrew Cole.

As was to be expected from a match of this magnitude, both sides started in fairly tentative fashion.  The early exchanges saw both teams tentatively feel each other out, however it was the visitors who looked the most threatening as play developed - as a series of testing crosses into the Fulham area brought about the first threat on goal.

On 18 minutes a piece of close play in the Fulham area between Yakubu and Patrik Berger almost resulted in a scoring opportunity when the former Czech international was put through. Fortunately for Fulham, the midfielder’s first touch was too heavy and Van der Sar gathered comfortably.

The visitors almost took the lead moments later when a Steve Stone cross was powerfully met by the head of Yakubu, who had managed to lose his marker. He successfully directed  the header on target and forced a fine save from Van der Sar.

Sylvain Legwinski then came close to netting the opening goal for Fulham on 20 minutes when he met a Claus Jensen corner at the near post.

Moments later Fulham were to pay for that missed opportunity when the ball broke quickly to LuaLua in the penalty area. After jinking inside Zat Knight, he successfully evaded a challenge from Moritz Volz before bending a low shot just inside the far post.

An immediate response was not forthcoming from the Whites, but a good equalising opportunity went begging when Claus Jensen planted a soft header down into the ground and over the bar from short range.

Fulham had the opportunity to go into the interval level when, on 45 minutes a cross from Cole was handled in the area by Stefenovic. Steed Malbranque stepped up to take the penalty but his effort was saved by Ashdown.

The second half started in much the same vein as the first; Fulham looking to probe their way through an organised Portsmouth rearguard and the visitors countering on the break.  Patrik Berger almost doubled Portsmouth’s advantage from just such a situation when his left footed drive whistled past the far post.

Claus Jensen made way for Brian McBride on 56 minutes and it was a substitution that would change the course of the game.  The switch meant that Luis Boa Morte moved back out to the left wing as the American striker linked up with Cole in the middle.

The moved reaped an instant dividend as Boa Morte cut past Primus on the left and placed the ball into the path of Cole who, true to form, side footed his effort past Ashdown.

The goal gave Fulham the boost they had so desperately needed and with Brian McBride now giving Portsmouth defenders De Zeeuw and Stefanovic significant trouble in the air, the match entered a finely balanced phase.

Cole came just inches away from giving Fulham the lead after a spell of continuous pressure resulted in the winning of a free kick just to the left of the Portsmouth penalty area.  The resulting delivery fell to Cole who side footed against the base of the post from six yards.

Fulham took the lead through McBride in spectacular fashion when a high punt up field was misread by the Portsmouth defence and the American striker latched on to the loose ball.  Even through an awkward bounce meant that the ball kicked up just behind McBride’s run, he adjusted his body well and volleyed a wonderful finish past Ashdown.

With the announcement of four minutes of extra time, Portsmouth made a concerted push for the equaliser leaving their defenders man for man with Fulham at the back.  It was a risky ploy from the visitors and it backfired when Primus fell asleep in possession and Boa Morte nipped in and sprinted towards goal.  Having rounded Ashdown, the Portuguese winger slipped a covering tackle and rolled the ball home to guarantee all three points.
