Chris Coleman’s intention of  fielding the same starting eleven which had beaten West Brom 6-1 at the Cottage two weekends ago took a pre match blow when goalkeeper Antti Niemi was injured in the warm up, Tony Warner coming into the starting eleven. Papa Bouba Diop now returned from the African Cup of Nations was on the bench.

Fulham almost made a dramatic start inside two minutes when a swift break forward saw Radzinski chip the ball behind the home defence finding Helguson who fired against the underside of the bar.

Bolton’s first attempt at goal came after nine minutes when a Stelios corner was flicked on by Faye, N’Gotty tried a spectacular volley but lofted the ball over the bar. Play switched quickly to the other end where Helguson and Boa Morte combined down the left before Boa’s cross was deflected back by N’Gotty into Jaaskelainen’s hands.

Bolton’s next attempt caused Fulham hearts to flutter. Radzinski was penalised for a foul and an angled free kick whipped in, Nolan’s flick grabbed only at the second attempt by Warner.

Fulham went in front after 22 minutes and it was that man Helguson who once again did the damage rising high to head in a beautifully whipped in free kick from Elliott. Bolton responded immediately and had the ball in the net through Nolan but the Bolton man had moved a fraction early and Referee Dowd ruled out the goal,

Warner was soon in action again going down low to hold a Nolan shot after the midfielder was played in by Gardner. A long throw from Okocha caused a moment of panic in the Fulham defence but Nakata volleyed the effort just over.

It was end to end stuff and Jaaskelainen had to be alert to reach another Elliott free kick before diving bravely to foil Helguson. In the 35th minute Luis Boa Morte was booked for a foul on Joey O’Brien, a second caution soon followed when Nolan was booked for a foul on Malbranque. The resulting free kick almost brought a second Fulham goal as Boa Morte’s low cross was almost turned into his own net by Faye, Bolton relieved at escaping having only conceded a corner.

Bolton levelled just before the break.Stelios’ corner was returned to him and his cross was headed goalwards by Faye forcing a fine save from Warner the resulting scramble saw Hiedar Helguson push the ball into his own goal.

The opening exchanges of the second half were scrappy and it was not until the 58th minute that we saw a worthwhile effort on goal when Faye headed over from Okocha’s cross. It was to be the Bolton man’s last action as he was replaced by Speed on the hour.

Bolton took the lead after 67 minutes. The move started on the left hand touchline with Davies just keeping the ball in play before passing to Nolan who jinked his way past two defenders before sliding the ball past Warner into the far corner of the net.

Fulham almost hit back immediately with Helguson rising high at the far post to meet Bocanegra’s cross but the effort was held by Jaaskelainen.

In the 74th minute  Fulham made a double substitution,  Papa Bouba Diop replaced Tomasz Radzinski and at the same time Collins John came on for Brian McBride.

Bolton were now on top and almost increased their lead after 79 minutes when a short corner was eventually played to Okocha who thundered a shot narrowly over. Fulham did however almost level when Diop climbed highest to meet Boa Morte’s free kick but his header dropped wide. The next move saw Boa Morte’s cross turned for a corner which Bocanegra met with a firm header, Jaaskelainen stopped the ball but in the resulting scramble Boa Morte somehow scooped the ball over from a yard out.
