Fulham made just one change from the side that started against Manchester United with Phillipe Christanval in place of Brian McBride as Fulham started with a 4-5-1 formation with Collins John playing as lone striker.

With three strikers on the bench the intention to supplement the attack later in the game was the clear plan. On the Charlton side the expected return of previous first choice goalkeeper Dean Keily did not materialise.

Defences dominated in the early stages with Steed Malbranque carrying the greatest threat, Charlton though almost took an early lead when Rommedahl worked an opening on the right hand edge of the box and sent a low shot thudding against the post.

Fulham’s first real attempt on goal came after twelve minutes when Moritz Volz burst into the box laying the ball across to Collins John who shot tamely wide of goal. John was again almost on the scoresheet two minutes later when he threw himself forward at Boa Morte’s pass but just failed to reach the ball. Diop then tried his first long range shot of the night but the ball sailed harmlessly over.

Charlton again found room on the right flank and Rommedhal’s low centre almost created an opening for Darren Bent who slid in but failed to connect with the cross. In the 27th minute Kishishev became the first man booked by Referee Mike Riley for a foul on Claus Jensen, from the free kick the ball was played forward to Steed Malbranque who quickly turned the ball back to Collins John who volleyed the ball into the net to put Fulham in front.

Phillipe Christianval was booked for a foul on Powell but Charlton wasted the free kick, the ball soon transferred to the other end where Steed Malbranque fired the ball across the goalmouth. It was end to end stuff with Danny Murphy rifling the ball narrowly wide.

A foul on Volz earned a free kick on the edge of the box, there was a short delay whilst Tomasz Radzinski replaced Christanval then Claus Jensen curled the ball just wide of goal. A foul on Luis Boa Morte produced another Jensen free kick which found its way to the far side of the area where Radzinski struck a low shot across the face of goal. On the stroke of half time Charlton almost equalised when Rommedhal’s cross almost found Hreidarsson at the far post but the former Palace defender could only stab the ball wide.

Charlton equalised three minutes after he break when Jerome Thomas centred from the left, the ball running across to Danny Murphy who fired a low shot past Mark Crossley from ten yards out.

A foul on Boa Morte close to the touchline produced a free kick which was whipped into the box, Diop climbed above the home defence but his header passed just over the bar. Jay Bothroyd replaced Jerome Thomas on the hour and soon showed his attacking instinct with a low shot which Crossley dived low to hold.

A fine flowing move involving Jensen and Boa Morte ended with Moritz Volz striding forward to hammer a low shot a fraction wide. Chris Perry then headed over the bar from a Murphy free kick after Bocanegra was penalised for a foul.

Charlton brought on Talal El Karkouri after 76 minutes, his first act to pick up a booking for a dreadful challenge on Luis Boa Morte. McBride replaced Collins John and soon set up a chance for Papa Bouba Diop who fired wide from the edge of the box. With two minutes remaining Hreidarsson went close and Fulham were unlucky with a neat passing move which almost saw Radzinski get behind the home defence. Malbranque then provided a chance for Boa Morte who volleyed wide.
