Following the sad passing away of George Best during the week, the memory of arguably of the one of the most naturally talented players in living memory was respectfully saluted with a minute of applause from both sets of supporters.

The Whites got off to a fine start when, after only four minutes, a wonderfully angled pass from Tomasz Radzinski split the Bolton defence and Brian McBride displayed his goal poacher’s instincts by nipping in front of his marker and slotting home.

Radzinski was unlucky to see his eighth minute shot deflect wide for a corner after the Canadian international had linked up well McBride.

Despite being a goal down, Bolton continued to stick to their plan of hitting high balls into the danger zones in and around the Fulham area – with Kevin Davies often the target.

Although the visitors were looking to keep the Fulham defence under pressure, the Whites gave them a timely reminder of the consequences of committing men forward when, on 17 minutes, Steed Malbranque broke away and slipped a well-weighted ball to Collins John.  The Dutchman’s first touch took him round Jaaskelainen, but unfortunately he was unable to reach the ball in time to finish.

Brian McBride doubled his tally in the18th minute with an opportune piece of forward play. Radhi Jaidi failed to deal with a long Mark Crossley kick under pressure from McBride and the American striker wriggled past the defender and dispatched a spectacular volley past Jaaskelainen.

The Whites continued to up the pressure as they came close to extending their lead as a flurry of chances came their way.

Mark Crossley was called into action on 28 minutes when he had to pluck a Kevin Davies header out of the air after a well-delivered Bolton corner.  Fulham replied at the other end when a smart one-two on the right wing freed Malbranque to run into the area.  The Frenchman rounded one defender before seeing his left footed shot deflect wide.

Fulham hit the visitors on the counter attack again on 33 minutes. This time, Radzinski played a well-directed pass over Bolton’s central defensive pairing and into the path of Collins John, whose fierce shot flew just wide of the near top corner.

The remainder of the half was characterised by Bolton winning a number of free kicks around the edge of Fulham’s area – with plenty coming to no avail.

The visitors had Fulham on the back foot early in the second half when a neat passing move on the right hand side of the area forced a corner.  The Whites dealt with the threat capably and soon crafted a scoring opportunity at the other end when the ball was worked to Steed Malbranque, whose shot from the edge of the area was well gathered by Jaaskelainen.

Luis Boa Morte was replaced by Sylvain Legwinski just after the hour mark when the Fulham Captain picked up two knocks in quick succession.

Collins john was proving to be more than a handful for the Bolton back line. On more then one occasion, the young striker worked his way into space to get on the end of a long pass up field before sprinting goal wards.  Thankfully for the visitors, the pace of Ricardo Gardner saved the Trotters.

As the match entered the closing stages Bolton started to enforce their style of play on proceedings.  For long periods Fulham defence, superbly marshalled by Carlos Bocanegra and Alain Goma, held firm as all manner of awkward balls were pumped into the Fulham area.  Credit should also go to Papa Bouba Diop, whose presence in front of the defence helped nullify the threat of Davies.

Sylvain Legwinski's own goal in the first minute of injury time ensured a nervy finish. But Fulham held firm for the remaining minutes.  A bad day in London for the Trotters was capped off when El-Hadji Diouf was shown his second yellow card for dissent as both teams walked off the pitch.
