Fulham certainly looked eager to impress, making a lively start which saw good chances fall to both Diomansy Kamara and Aaron Hughes - with the latter seeing his fifth minute effort cleared off the line following a Simon Davies corner.

Clint Dempsey saw his shot flash just wide of Ben Foster’s on 11 minutes after a fine piece of control allowed Diomansy Kamara time to pick his pass. With Dempsey, Kamara and Gera interchanging up front, the Birmingham defence found it hard to read their opponents’ movement.

The visitors took the lead on 20 minutes after Alexander Hleb led a quick counter-attack, the Birmingham attacker reached the edge of the Fulham area before squaring a pass to Sebastian Larsson who fired past Mark Schwarzer from eight yards. It was certainly a goal against the run of play.

Carlos Salcido, who appeared to be struggling with a knock, made way for crowd favourite John Pantsil. The Ghana international entered the pitch to a rousing round of applause. Chris Baird moved across to left-back as a result of the substitution.

The flow of the game stabilised somewhat following Pantsil’s introduction. Birmingham’s most dangerous threat, the counter-attack, looked to have been negated as the Whites once again stepped up their game.

The remainder of the first-half was a relatively even affair, with Fulham looking to find a way through a congested Birmingham defence.

Zoltan Gera’s ability in the air proved to be a valuable quality for the Whites. The Hungarian international was providing a valuable outlet for Fulham and it was his well-timed header that set up Fulham’s equaliser. Gera peeled away to the back post as Simon Davies’ corner came in, rising highest in the box he nodded the ball into the path of Clint Dempsey to head home from two yards out.

Fulham had their tails up after the goal, as they pinned City back in their own half for an extended period. The dangerous Alexander Hleb was replaced just after the hour mark by the Blues’ gargantuan striker, Nikloa Zigic.

As the game approached the final 20 minutes, Fulham were looking the more likely to score. Clint Dempsey did almost that on 71 minutes when his fiercely driven shot was well saved by Foster at the near post.

Mark Hughes elected to freshen up Fulham’s attack by brining on Eddie Johnson for Simon Davies on 73 minutes. Johnson joined Kamara in attack as Zoltan Gera moved to the right flank. There were nervy moments for the Whites soon after the change when Zigic flicked a header against Mark Schwarzer’s crossbar.

Fulham survived the scare and continued to push forward. Only a good save from Foster denied Eddie Johnson on 82 minutes after the American striker raced on to a Kamara through ball.

The Whites produced a late rally but they were unable to breach the Birmingham defence a second time before the final whistle sounded.
