Fulham eased into the Fourth Round of the FA Cup with Budweiser after a comfortable Third Round Replay win over Norwich City.

After Nathan Redmond had seen an early shot saved by Maarten Stekelenburg and Robert Snodgrass had hit the bar, Fulham took control.

Just as he did in the original tie, Darren Bent opened the scoring, firing in from Pajtim Kasami’s cross in the 16th minute, before Ashkan Dejagah doubled the home side’s advantage just before the break.

There were a couple of nervy moments in the second half for Fulham but Steve Sidwell made sure of a spot in the next round at Sheffield United on Sunday 25th February when he headed home Sascha Riether’s pin-point cross in the 68th minute.

There was even time for René Meulensteen to hand Cottage debuts to youngsters Moussa Dembélé, Lasse Vigen Christensen and Muamer Tankovic in the second half.

Head Coach Meulensteen made nine changes to his starting XI from the side that lost 4-1 at home to Sunderland on Saturday. The main team news was that Captain Brede Hangeland was back in the side for the first time since the away win at Crystal Palace in October following following surgery to address a nerve problem in his right leg. Stekelenburg also returned following an ankle injury, while Dan Burn made his home debut.

Norwich almost took the lead with the first attack of the game in the third minute. Firstly Redmond was slipped in behind Kieran Richardson but saw his shot from a tight angle beaten away by Stekelenburg. Fulham failed to clear their lines and the ball eventually found its way to Snodgrass who cut inside before hitting a curling effort from the edge of the box which beat Stekelenburg but came back off the crossbar.

Five minutes later, Hangeland slipped to allow Johan Elmander in down the left-hand side but his cross towards the waiting Snodgrass was cut out by a sliding Giorgos Karagounis.

Fulham’s first attempt on goal came in the 10th minute when Sidwell collected Dejagah’s pass but saw his effort from 20 yards fly straight into the arms of Mark Bunn.

And it was Fulham who went in front in the 16th minute. Riether played Kasami in down the right and his pull-back from the byline was given the merest of flicks by Dejagah into the path of Bent who buried his shot from 10 yards past Bunn.

Bent almost got a toe onto a fierce Riether drive from distance in the 23rd minute, before Russell Martin’s clearance went straight to Alexander Kačaniklić on the halfway line. The Fulham winger ran at the Norwich defence but fired his shot weakly at Bunn from the edge of the area.

It was 2-0 to Fulham in the 40th minute, however. A clearance by Bunn, under pressure from Kačaniklić, went to Bent 40 yards from goal. He headed it forwards where it was collected by Karagounis. Suddenly an attack was on and the Greek midfielder played a brilliant measured pass to send Kačaniklić in behind, with the Swede’s pull-back thumped home gleefully by Dejagah from close range. It was the final moment of note of a comfortable first half for Fulham, the first few minutes aside.

Norwich made a change at the break, with £8.5m man Ricky van Wolfswinkel replacing Redmond as the Canaries threw another striker into the mix.

As the rain fell down in SW6, City started the second half brightly. A brilliant run by Snodgrass saw him jink his way to the byline but his cross was cut out by the outstretched boot of Stekelenburg as van Wolfswinkel lay in wait.

Just after the hour mark, Sebastien Bassong peeled away from his marker to meet Snodgrass’ deep free-kick at the far post but couldn’t get enough on his header and Stekelenburg was able to claim the ball with relative ease.

Having taken the sting out of the Norwich response, Fulham made it 3-0 in the 68th minute with their first real attack of the second period. Kačaniklić’s cross was just out of reach of Dejagah but the ball stayed alive and Kasami fed Riether whose superb delivery from the right was met at the back stick by Sidwell who powered a header past Bunn for his sixth goal of the season and third in as many games.

Karagounis was booked shortly afterwards for a shirt pull on Bradley Johnson, before Stekelenburg saved a bouncing Snodgrass shot at the second attempt after a spot of pinball in the Fulham box.

Fulham made their first change in the 78th minute and it was home debut for Dembélé as he replaced Bent, before Christensen came on for Sidwell shortly afterwards for his Cottage bow.

Kačaniklić forced Bunn into a save with a low effort in the 86th minute, before he made way in Fulham’s final change as Tankovic entered the fray for another home debut and the Whites saw out the remaining moments to book their place at Bramall Lane.
