Fulham were the victims of an FA Cup upset on Tuesday as a last minute extra-time goal sent Sheffield United through.

The Sky Bet League One side frustrated the Whites throughout the match, with the stalemate after 90 minutes forcing extra-time.

Even in the added half hour, chances were at a premium, although Pajtim Kasami went close on several occasions.

With penalties looming, Craven Cottage was left stunned when Blades substitute Shaun Miller headed home from close range in the 120th minute to send his side through to the Fifth Round.

René Meulensteen made wholesale changes to the side that lost to Southampton three days previous, with Scott Parker, Brede Hangeland and Dan Burn the survivors.

Roared on by a vociferous away support, Sheffield United started brightly and Jamie Murphy connected well with the ball from just outside the box two minutes in but, thankfully, it flew a few inches wide of the post, with David Stockdale scrambling to cover.

Clint Dempsey showed excellent footwork to make space for himself 30 yards from goal in the 10th minute only to be cynically chopped down by Stephen McGinn. Kasami was the man tasked with taking the resultant set-piece but he drilled it straight into the wall.

Chances were proving to be pretty scarce in the tie, with Harry Maguire next to try his luck after 18 minutes, but he was on his way back down when he met McGinn’s corner and his looping header sailed some way over the crossbar.

The next opening also came from a set-piece after Muamer Tanković was dragged to the floor in a wide position, but Kasami’s header from Alexander Kačaniklić’s deep free-kick never looked like finding the target.

Scott Parker then stung the hands of Mark Howard with a rasping drive from distance, but referee Neil Swarbrick had penalised Hugo Rodallega for handball in the build-up. Howard was called into action again after 26 minutes, but Tanković’s low effort lacked power and the Blades stopper claimed comfortably.

It was proving difficult to break the away side down as they continued to operate with 11 men behind the ball, but Kasami fashioned an opening down the right on 29 minutes, creating enough space to lob a cross in. That delivery was only half cleared as far as Tanković who sent in a dipping volley, but he got just too much power on his execution and it landed behind the goal.

A lovely one-two between Rodallega and Dempsey almost saw the former put through on goal but the close attentions of Neill Collins meant he couldn’t get the ball under control and Howard was able to smother and avert the danger.

It was then United’s turn to attack in the 35th minute when John Brayford made a rare jaunt forward from right-back before slicing his shot from 20 yards wide of Stockdale’s near post. That was then followed by a Murphy header that flew a yard wide as Nigel Clough’s side enjoyed a positive spell of attacking pressure.

Just as two minutes of added time were announced, Fulham went as close as they had all game to the opener when Dan Burn met Kasami’s corner. The centre-back got his header back across goal from a tight angle but he couldn’t quite get the correct trajectory and it missed the target, with no Fulham man on hand to tap in as Bob Harris cleared.

The Blades began the second period on the front foot and were awarded a free-kick in a dangerous position within a minute, with Harris whipping over a vicious left-footed strike which bent a yard wide of the top corner.

Full-back Harris – who had been booked in the first half for a nasty challenge on Josh Passley – appeared to have a new attacking vigour following the interval and he went close again in the 49th minute when he crashed in a dangerous effort that Stockdale did well to hold.

Dempsey did his best to take the game by the scruff of the neck six minutes later when he turned and bore down on goal before rifling in a low strike which deflected behind for a corner.

Meulensteen then made his first changes of the game when wingers Ashkan Dejagah and Damien Duff entered the action, with Rodallega and Kačaniklić the men making way.

Duff was involved almost immediately when he dinked in a teasing ball from the right that Maguire just got a toe on. That interception actually sent the ball skidding towards goal, though, and Howard had to get down sharply to push behind for a corner.

Steve Sidwell was introduced in the 69th minute as Fulham’s final substitute, with Parker the man replaced, presumably with Manchester United on Sunday in mind. The away side then made their first change of the game as Jose Baxter came on for Chris Porter.

A real bright spark in the match – as he had been in the fixture at Bramall Lane – was Tanković and he created a chance for himself in the 77th minute when he span away from his man, but his rasping strike from 25 yards missed by about a metre.

Each side then saw an opportunity come and go as a wicked cross from Baxter evaded everyone in the Whites penalty box, before Fulham went straight up the other end with Kasami whose thunderbolt didn’t dip quickly enough to find the far top corner.

Dempsey then saw an overhead kick deflect into Howard’s path in the 84th minute, before Baxter saw a speculative volley fly wide from a considerable distance as both sides looked to grab the winner in normal time.

With time running out, Fulham saw a penalty appeal fall on deaf ears when Dempsey took a tumble under pressure from Maguire. Replays showed that the towering centre-back appeared to have the Texan by the neck, but Swarbrick decided there was no infringement.

Hangeland played a fine ball from deep into the path of Dempsey who had made a clever run as four minutes of stoppage time were announced, but he was unable to get it under control as the chance disappeared, with extra-time confirmed moments later.

Clough made another alteration before the start of the additional 30 minutes, with Matt Hill taking the place of Harris.

Dempsey saw another claim for a spot-kick denied early on after the restart, before Brayford headed over from a corner as the end-to-end nature of the game continued.

United’s final substitution was made in the 98th minute as Stefan Scougall made way for Miller.

Brayford then brought the game to life a minute later when he burst from the halfway line towards the edge of the box, evading numerous Fulham bodies en route, before drawing an excellent save from Stockdale who had to be at full stretch to deny the right-back.

An awful challenge by substitute Miller then enraged the Fulham faithful as he caught Passley high on the ankle, but Swarbrick opted for a yellow rather than a red card.

Sidwell was then somewhat harshly booked when he and Baxter both committed to a tackle. Their movements as they aimed to connect with the ball were identical but Swarbrick ruled that the Fulham man was in the wrong.

Passley was penalised for a foul on Flynn in a dangerous position just outside the box in the 113th minute, but Baxter’s set-piece cleared the bar by a fair margin.

The Whites responded with a delightful sweeping move two minutes later as Duff chipped a ball into Sidwell who had made a good run. He laid it off to Kasami who smashed across the face of goal with the outside of his boot, but it flew agonisingly wide.

The Switzerland international then had another go from 25 yards out, with Howard getting down quickly to push it away for a corner.

But right at the death, United snatched it. After they’d won a corner, Maguire got on the end of the delivery to nod it across goal where Miller was waiting to head in unmarked from a few yards out.

The sickeningly late time of the goal meant Fulham were unable to launch a response, as our FA Cup dreams faded at the Fourth Round stage.
