Fulham stepped their pre-season regime up another level but were unable a stop a physically strong Werder Bremen outfit winning by a single goal at the Weser-Stadion.

The Whites jet straight off from the game to a high-altitude camp near Graz in Austria, with the aim of raising their fitness levels somewhere near their German opposition's, whose triumph was secured by Nils Petersen’s 55th minute strike.

Robin Dutt’s men begin their competitive season next weekend and the Bundesliga side showed the sharpness an extra two weeks of training provides to hold on to victory.

New coach Dutt, replacing the out-going club legend Thomas Schaaf after 14 years at the helm, is determined to stamp his mark on the club and his newly-assembled team took control of the game early on.

The Whites had Dutch shot-stopper Maarten Stekelenburg to thank for keeping the scores level when he stretched to palm over Aaron Hunt’s driven effort, then flew across goal to stop Sebastien Prödl’s header from the resulting corner.

One corner later, and Prödl had ghosted towards the back post to meet Clemens Fritz’s delivery but he could only head wide from close range.

Werder’s wing play was causing problems and the Whites rode their luck when Eljero Elia was left unmarked, and only headed the safe side of Stekelenburg’s post with the goal at his mercy.

It was a scare which made Jol’s Team settle and build some possession from the back, Ashkan Dejagah began tormenting from the right and Dimitar Berbatov’s movement kept Werder’s centre-backs on their toes.

The Bundesliga side had finished the first period stronger, with Fritz jabbing a shot wide under good pressure from Fernando Amorebieta, but the Whites had improved as the half progressed.

But, despite Fulham enjoying more and more possession, the hosts were asking the questions from the start of the second half. Hunt placed a free-kick narrowly off target and Theo Gebre Sellasie sent a shot fizzing over.

The break-through finally arrived after a lapse in the Whites' defence allowed Petersen to take advantage of the space, ride Stekelenburg’s challenge and slot the ball into an empty net.

A tiring Fulham continued to battle against the tide but two excellent combinations between Berbatov and first-half substitute Mesca Na Bangna, allowed the youngster a couple of half-chances.

The first was expertly blocked by the on-rushing Sebastian Mielitz in the Bremen goal, the second charged down by composed full-back Clemens Fritz.

Bremen regained control in the last five minutes with the Whites wilting and could have added to the score, showing the importance of building towards peak physical fitness ahead of the season.

  • FULL-TIME: WERDER BREMEN 1-0 FULHAM.
  • 89 Nice link up between Rodallega and Kasami but Bremen's composed defending snuffs out the chance.
  • 84 After a swift passing move, Arnautovic slams a shot over. Briggs and David are on for Sidwell and Richardson.
  • 78 All of Werder's substitutions have slowed the pace down of this game, but the Whites are aiming to up the tempo at every chance.
  • 72 A multitude of changes have been made by Bremen, as the Whites switch Ruiz and Berbatov for Kasami and Rodallega.
  • 67 Amorebieta goes off for Hughes.
  • 66 Another smart combination between Berbatov and Na Bangna frees the young winger to shoot but a great block by Fritz stops the shot going goalwards.
  • 65 The excellent Hunt drives through midfield and drills another shot at goal, this time just over Stekelenburg's top right hand corner.
  • 62 The Whites best chance of the game forces a superb save from Mielitz. Richardson and Berbatov combine to release Na Bangna but the keeper is quick out to block.
  • 60 Boateng is being replaced by Karagounis as the Whites search for a route back in to the game.
  • 60 Fritz darts to the byline and fires a dangerous drive across the face of the Whites goal, fortunately, to safety.
  • 57 It's very nearly two, as Stekelenburg stands tall to make the initial save from Hunt but the rebound falls to Elia and, somehow, he rolls the ball wide.
  • GOAL: WERDER 1-0 FULHAM. Petersen seizes control of a loose ball inside the penalty area and stays composed to go around Stekelenburg and finish.

  • 47 Werder make early progress and Hunt curls a 25-yard free-kick just over the Whites' crossbar.
  • One substitution for Fulham at half-time, Dejagah is replaced by Duff, and Werder kick off for the second half.
  • HALF-TIME: WERDER BREMEN 0-0 FULHAM. The Whites are still level after a slow start in Bremen, and our performance has improved as the half has progressed.
  • 42 Outstanding control and a jinking solo run from Fritz results in him poking a shot just wide under good pressure from Amorebieta.
  • 37 Bremen put some nice passes together and Junuzovic lets fly from distance but the shot doesn't trouble Stekelenburg.
  • 34 Berbatov and Elia both get yellow cards.
  • 34 A fine run by Berbatov is brought to an end as the Bremen defence crowd him out. The Whites are posing more threat in their last few attacks.
  • No risks taken with Kacaniklic. He's off down the tunnel and the sub is made, with Na Bangna coming on.
  • 27 Kacaniklic makes a burst down the Whites left with little support and a tackle sends him crashing to the ground. He's receiving treatment.
  • 22 The referee calls for a mid-half drinks break, and the Manager uses the break as a chance for an early team-talk.
  • 20 Dejagah almost works a sight on goal after a mazy dribble down the right wing but strong defending from Gebre Selassie halts him.
  • 17 Martin Jol's side are settling down and enjoying more time on the ball now with some possession football, building from the back.
  • 15 Werder carve out their best chance so far as Elia is left with a free header from Fritz's cross but the Dutchman somehow puts it wide from six yards.
  • 12 The Whites force Bremen back and earn their first corner of the game. Ruiz delivers but a foul is given against Sidwell.
  • 10 Ekici goes down with a back injury as the Whites take a short breather.
  • 9 Stekelenburg is at full stretch to palm Hunt's strike over the bar, he then makes another superb save from Prödl's header. Proving a threat from corners, Prödl heads the next delivery narrowly wide.
  • 7 Werder are pushing forward with early pressure and Richardson gets in an important block to deny Hunt's drive.
  • 3 The first attempt on goal comes from Werder's Junuzovic from 25-yards but his shot is dragged wide across goal.
  • We have kicked-off with a fast tempo at the Weser-Stadion, it's Werder Bremen versus Fulham.
  • Out walk the teams to applause, chants and waving flags. Werder wear their traditional green so Stekelenburg is in his away strip.
  • A polite round of applause for Martin Jol is a nice gesture from the Werder fans, particularly as our Manager used to manage their fierce rivals Hamburg!
  • The Weser-Stadion is a sea of green, rocking to the sound of German pop with ten minutes until kick-off. This is Werder's final pre-season friendly before the start of the Bundesliga.
  • The teams are in and it's a strong line-up from Fulham with Boateng and Sidwell in midfield; Ruiz and Berbatov up front.
  • Welcome to Bremen, as the Whites take on Werder in their last away pre-season friendly game before the new campaign begins.
