A Yaya Toure hat-trick, of which two goals were penalties, a Fernandinho effort and a late Martin Demichelis tap-in condemned 10-man Fulham to a 5-0 defeat by Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Saturday.

The Whites were well in the contest in the first half but fell behind after 26 minutes when Fernando Amorebieta was perhaps slightly harshly ruled to have impeded Alvaro Negredo in the area, with Toure opening the scoring from the spot.

It was 2-0 early in the second half when Amorebieta felled David Silva. The centre-back was given his marching orders after denying a goalscoring opportunity, and Toure again made no mistake with the spot-kick.

And the giant midfielder secured the match ball in the 65th minute with an absolute peach of a strike from long range. Fernandinho then added some gloss to the scoreline with a sweet finish of his own, before Demichelis notched from a couple of yards out late on.

Felix Magath made two changes to the side that defeated Newcastle United a week ago, with John Arne Riise and Sascha Riether coming in for Pajtim Kasami and Lewis Holtby. Riether made up a third of a central midfield three, alongside Steve Sidwell and William Kvist.

Fulham began the match in positive fashion, hassling and hurrying the City players when not in possession, and looking to move forward whenever they had the ball. It made for a high tempo to the opening five minutes, although that was disrupted when Silva crumpled in a heap after Riether had won the ball from him strongly but fairly.

The first half chance arrived two minutes later when a neat James Milner flick sent Pablo Zabaleta into space in the penalty area, but his low cross was well dealt with by David Stockdale who smothered the danger.

The home fans were screaming for a penalty in the 13th minute when Milner went down as Sidwell attempted to rob him of the ball, but referee Jonathan Moss was disinterested.

In front of an expectant home crowd, the Blues began to up the pace and Milner drew a good firm save from Stockdale in the 17th minute when he rifled in a powerful first time strike from a fairly acute angle.

The Whites were awarded a free-kick in a decent position after 22 minutes when Kieran Richardson was chopped down by Demichelis, but the left winger’s set-piece crashed into the wall. The home side were unable to clear the danger though, with Cauley Woodrow then seeing his shot blocked by Joleon Lescott, before Richardson made a sweet connection with the follow-up, only to watch it fly an inch wide of Joe Hart’s post.

With 25 minutes on the clock, City were awarded a penalty when the linesman adjudged that Amorebieta fouled Negredo, although replays showed that the initial contact may have been outside the box. Toure stepped up to coolly send Stockdale the wrong way from 12 yards.

Fulham had an opportunity to equalise shortly after the half hour mark when great work by Richardson saw him leave Demichelis for dead. He then stood up an inviting cross that Riether did well to beat Aleksander Kolarov to, but he couldn’t direct his header on target.

A blistering counter attack from the home side five minutes later culminated in Fernandinho playing in Silva. The Spaniard beat Stockdale with a clipped shot but Amorebieta was perfectly positioned to head away from under the bar.

The Venezuelan was involved in the thick of the action and Fulham’s next chance fell his way when he found space at a corner, only to send his header some way over Hart’s crossbar.

It was imperative that Fulham didn’t concede another before half-time but they almost did just that when Kolarov found space in the area. Thankfully, though, his cross-shot rattled the woodwork and sailed out for a throw. Stockdale may have in fact got fingertips to the effort and, if he did, it was truly an outstanding save.

Within eight minutes of the second period, City were awarded a second spot-kick in an incident that saw Amorebieta dismissed. Silva skipped beyond the defender who mistimed his tackle and he knew the red card was coming as soon as Moss blew for a penalty. Toure was on hand once again to dispatch the kick with minimal fuss.

Magath made his first changes shortly after, with Holtby coming on for Richardson, while Patrick Roberts was handed his First Team debut as he took the place of fellow Academy graduate Alexander Kačaniklić.

City tried to make their man advantage count immediately, but efforts from Milner and Kolarov from range both missed the target, although the third goal did arrive soon after from the mercurial right foot of Toure. A clever free-kick was squared to the Ivorian who showed incredible technique to bend a sumptuous strike inside the far post from 25 yards out to secure his hat-trick.

A Milner effort from just inside the box deflected off John Heitinga and behind for a corner as City looked to increase the misery on Fulham, with the subsequent set-piece resulting in Kolarov firing in a shot that Stockdale had to beat away.

Demichelis was next to try his luck when he connected well with a Kolarov corner, but Riether was on the line to punt the ball away.

As would be expected with 10 men, Fulham’s forays into the opposition box were few and far between, but Sidwell made a good run to latch onto Holtby’s lofted pass with 10 minutes remaining, but was unable to get the ball under control as he advanced on Hart’s goal.

The visitors’ final substitution was then made, with the hard working Woodrow replaced by Kasami.

City then grabbed a fourth seconds later, as Fernandinho brushed past the challenge of Kvist before rifling a wicked strike into the postage stamp of the goal.

It was almost five in the 88th minute when Negredo and Milner exchanged passes before the latter poked an effort inside the post that Stockdale did well to tip behind.

Unfortunately, the fifth goal did arrive moments later when substitute Stevan Jovetic’s low effort was blocked by Stockdale but fell kindly for Demichelis who deflected the ball into the back of the net.

It should have been six in the 90th minute when Sidwell lost his footing in the area, but Negredo put his effort wide when it seemed easier to score.

To rub salt into the wounds in stoppage time, Holtby was booked for diving, despite replays showing that Fernandinho wiped him out.
