Hatem Ben Arfa’s late strike saw Fulham go down to a 1-0 loss at Newcastle United on Saturday.

After last season’s last-gasp defeat at St James’ Park, there was more than a touch of déjà vu about this term’s visit as Fulham weathered the storm only to be undone by a sucker punch at the end.

An uneventful game opened up after the break, with David Stockdale doing well to deny Ben Afra and Yoan Gouffran, while Papiss Cisse saw a header hit the bar.

At the other end, Bryan Ruiz forced a good stop from Tim Krul with a free-kick but, with the game heading for a draw, Ben Arfa won it for Newcastle when he cut in from the right and unleashed a swerving effort past Stockdale.

Martin Jol made three changes from the side that lost 3-1 to Arsenal last time out in the league. In came Ruiz, Alexander Kačaniklić and Darren Bent in place of Damien Duff, Adel Taarabt and Pajtim Kasami.

With a vocal home crowd behind them, Newcastle went close to opening the scoring after just five minutes when Sylvain Marveaux’s corner was met by Fabricio Coloccini with his header from six yards being blocked near to the line by his own teammate in Cisse.

Fulham were content to hit Newcastle on the break, with ex-Magpies man Scott Parker leading by example in the centre of the park with some driving runs forward. Chances were at a premium, however, although Bent nearly latched onto Ruiz’s delightful floated pass on 14 minutes.

At the other end, Mathieu Debuchy let fly from distance in the 20th minute but his 30-yard effort was straight down the throat of Stockdale. Six minutes later, Cisse nearly got away but Aaron Hughes nipped in to nick the ball off the forward’s toes.

Better control from Kačaniklić could have seen Fulham go in front on the half-hour mark. The Swede looked all set to collect Brede Hangeland’s long ball forward but his touch let him down and Newcastle got back to clear.

Cisse then spun away from Hangeland but saw his shot from a tight angle blocked by the chest of Stockdale. On 42 minutes, Debuchy’s cross was met by Cisse who had got between Hughes and Sascha Riether but the striker’s header drifted harmlessly wide. Parker was then booked for tugging back Marveaux on the stroke of half-time.

The second half continued in much the same vein. Kačaniklić was outmuscled on the edge of the Newcastle box by Moussa Sissoko who fed Ben Arfa. The Frenchman shaped to deliver one of his trademark left-footed drives but Steve Sidwell launched himself to bravely turn the ball behind.

On the hour, Bent’s header from a Ruiz cross was deflected wide, before Cisse and Sissoko saw efforts blocked by John Arne Riise and Hughes respectively.

Fulham tested Krul for the first time in the 67th minute. Kačaniklić was bundled down just outside the box to win the Whites a free-kick. Ruiz’s effort was on target but Krul hurled himself to his left to push it away brilliantly.

The Whites were forced into their first change on 72 minutes, with the injured Riether being replaced by Matthew Briggs, before Gouffran’s header from a corner by fellow substitute Yohan Cabaye was well held by Stockdale.

The closest the game had come to a goal came in the 77th minute when Ben Arfa’s pin-point cross from the right was met by Cisse who saw his powerful header crash off the crossbar and behind. Fulham were living dangerously now and Stockdale got down well at his near post to save Ben Arfa’s shot, before the Newcastle man saw his cross headed wide by Gouffran when it seemed easier to score.

Taarabt replaced Bent with eight minutes remaining and could have snatched the win for Fulham when he met Kačaniklić’s pull-back from the left but saw his shot saved by the feet of Krul.

Moments later at the other end, the deadlock was broken. Ben Arfa picked up the ball on the right-hand side of the area, jinked inside and unleashed a swerving left-footed shot that flew past an unsighted Stockdale.

Jol responded by throwing on Hugo Rodallega for Sidwell but it was Newcastle who continued to threaten, with Stockdale saving from Gouffran, Cabaye and Cisse before the final whistle brought proceedings to a close.
