Second-half goals from Mohamed Diame, Carlton Cole and Joe Cole sent Fulham to a disappointing 3-0 loss at West Ham United.

The hosts enjoyed the better of the exchanges in the first half and Modibo Maiga hit the post with a header but the Whites went into the break level.

All that changed within a minute of the restart when Diame’s shot took a wicked deflection off Fernando Amorebieta to wrong-foot Maarten Stekelenburg.

Substitute Carlton Cole, the scourge of Fulham on so many occasions, then made it 2-0 with eight minutes remaining when he slotted in Stewart Downing’s cross. And Cole's namesake Joe, also a substitute, put further gloss on proceedings when he fired in with a couple of minutes left to condemn the Whites to a sixth successive defeat in all competitions.

Fulham boss Martin Jol made three changes to the side that lost 2-1 to Swansea City last time out. Steve Sidwell replaced Derek Boateng, Damien Duff came in for Bryan Ruiz and Adel Taarabt took the place of the ill Dimitar Berbatov.

The Hammers started the brighter and there was a flurry of early action in the Fulham penalty area. Kieran Richardson then went into the book in the eighth minute for chopping down Downing just outside the box. Downing took the resulting free-kick which Maiga met but his header from three yards crashed back off the near post. James Tomkins was shown a yellow card soon after when he caught Pajtim Kasami.

It was all West Ham in the early stages and James Collins headed Downing’s corner wide in the 18th minute, although Duff was on hand to clear off the line had it been on target. Sidwell became the second Fulham man to go into Martin Atkinson’s notebook when he chopped down Diame on the halfway line as West Ham looked to break in the 20th minute.

Stekelenburg was forced into his first real save of the game in the 26th minute, palming away Downing’s fierce left-footed drive from 25 yards after the winger had cut in from the right. Fulham quickly broke and Darren Bent was clipped by George McCartney just outside the area as he looked to go clear. McCartney was shown a yellow card but it could arguably have been a red had the Hammers defender been deemed to have been the last man.

On the stroke of half-time, Kevin Nolan hit a volley straight at Stekelenburg after meeting Matt Jarvis’ cross and Diame was booked for catching Duff on the ankle before the opening 45 minutes came to an end.

The second half burst into life within 60 seconds as West Ham went in front. Sidwell was caught in possession in the middle of the park and Diame took the ball forward before shooting from 20 yards. His effort was tame and probably would have been saved but took a deflection off Amorebieta and the wrong-footed Stekelenburg could only watch the ball roll into the net.

Taarabt did his best to make things happen at the other end but the West Ham defence remained largely untroubled and it was almost 2-0 to the hosts on the hour mark when Maiga’s shot from the edge of the box was pushed away by Stekelenburg. Downing picked up the rebound and skipped past Elsad Zverotić but saw his fierce drive flash over the bar.

Bent then had to clear from near the line after Tomkins met Downing’s corner with a firm header, before Ruiz replaced Duff in Fulham’s first change of the game in the 64th minute. A minute later Jarvis sent a diving header straight at Stekelenburg after Diame whipped in a cross from the right.

Kasami had Jussi Jaaskelainen scrambling across his goal in the 68th minute but his left-footed shot from the edge of the area flashed just wide of the goalkeeper’s left-hand post after Ruiz had teed up the Switzerland international.

Fulham were saved by the crossbar 60 seconds later when Downing’s deep cross hit the top of the woodwork and substitute Joe Cole shot straight at Stekelenburg as West Ham hit the Whites on the counter after a Ruiz free-kick had been cleared.

Jol made his second change of the afternoon when Giorgos Karagounis came on for Sidwell with 15 minutes to go, before Ravel Morrison should have scored but dragged a shot wide after Diame had been tackled in the box. It mattered little to the Hammers, though, as they made it 2-0 with eight minutes to go when Downing beat Richardson for pace down the right and crossed low for Carlton Cole to tap home from four yards.

Young Moussa Dembélé, who had been waiting to come on before the goal, replaced Richardson immediately afterwards to make his Fulham debut.

It was 3-0 to the Hammers with two minutes to go. Morrison jinked past Karagounis and Zverotić down the left and cut inside to tee up Joe Cole who slotted home from 12 yards to send the Whites to another defeat.
