Fulham’s recent good form came to an end in a heavy home defeat to fellow strugglers Sunderland, with Adam Johnson hitting a hat-trick for the visitors.

Johnson put the Black Cats in front when he won and took a 29th-minute free-kick which curled over the wall and past David Stockdale, who could only get a hand on the effort.

Ki Sung-Yueng then made it 2-0 in the 41st minute when he fired home Johnson’s pull-back from a free-kick through a crowd of players, but Steve Sidwell gave the Whites hope shortly after the restart when he nodded in Damien Duff’s corner.

Johnson grabbed his second in the 69th minute, slotting in Ki’s throughball, before the England international sealed his treble and the points late on when he scored from the spot after Philippe Senderos had been harshly adjudged to have tripped substitute Jozy Altidore.

After a respite from league action in the FA Cup with Budweiser last weekend, René Meulensteen reverted to type by making one change from the team that defeated West Ham United on New Year’s Day, with Clint Dempsey starting in place of Kieran Richardson for his second home debut. Neil Etheridge was on the bench after returning from his loan spell at Crewe Alexandra.

Fulham began well in bright sunshine at the Cottage, knocking the ball around with ease. The Whites had an early chance in the sixth minute when Dimitar Berbatov rose at the back post to meet an Adel Taarabt corner but couldn’t get enough on his close-range header and saw it bounce into the grateful arms of Vito Mannone.

Three minutes later and Berbatov was guilty of an uncharacteristic loss of composure in front of goal. After Sascha Riether robbed Wes Brown of possession near the halfway line, the right-back burst forward before delivering a low cross to the unmarked Berbatov. A goal looked inevitable but the Bulgarian seemed to lose his footing and shanked his left-footed effort well wide.

Taarabt and Dempsey shot wide from distance, before Stockdale was called into action for the first time, diving to his left to push away Phil Bardsley’s left-footed drive from just outside the box. The stop was even more impressive given Bardsley’s effort took a deflection off his own teammate in Jack Colback.

Sunderland went close again in the 21st minute. Johnson’s deep free-kick found John O’Shea lurking at the far post. He nodded back across goal where Steven Fletcher rose but could only direct his header over the bar under pressure from Stockdale.

At the other end, Dempsey picked up a loose ball in midfield and fed Taarabt who jinked this way and that before forcing Mannone into a good stop at his near post. Berbatov then tried a spectacular overhead kick from Duff’s cross but got his effort all wrong and shinned his shot behind.

But it was Sunderland who went in front in the 29th minute. After Johnson cut inside and won a free-kick off Sidwell, the winger picked himself up to curl the 20-yard effort over the wall and into the right-hand corner of the net. Stockdale got a firm hand on it but could only help it into the net.

Scott Parker let fly with an ambitious effort from distance that flew well over, before Dempsey had the ball in the net but saw the strike ruled out following a foul by Berbatov in the build-up.

Fulham nerves were jangling in the 35th minute. Stockdale dropped a routine catch from a Ki free-kick and Marcos Alonso pounced on the loose ball but saw his shot cleared from near the line by Fernando Amorebieta. Sidwell then went into the book – somewhat harshly - for catching Colback.

Riise followed Sidwell into Mike Dean’s notebook in the 40th minute for a late tackle on Fabio Borini and from the resulting free-kick, Ki peeled away to meet Johnson’s pull-back and send a shot through a crowd of players and past an unsighted Stockdale.

Taarabt then fired high and wide from distance before a disappointing first half for Fulham came to an end.

The next goal was going to prove crucial and it was Fulham who got it six minutes into the second half when Sidwell ducked low to meet Duff’s corner and head in from six yards for his fifth goal of the season.

Parker was shown a yellow card for a poor challenge on Johnson in the 59th minute, before Stockdale palmed Lee Cattermole’s deflected shot around the post. Fulham then made their first change, with Pajtim Kasami replacing Taarabt in a move that saw Dempsey switch to a role just off Berbatov.

Ashkan Dejagah came on for Duff in the 67th minute but 60 seconds later it was 3-1 to Sunderland as the Black Cats hit Fulham on the break. Ki and Altidore exchanged passes before the South Korean slid the ball beyond an exposed John Arne Riise to Johnson who fired through the legs of Stockdale from a tight angle.

Kasami saw a cross almost loop in but Mannone managed to get a fingertip on it in the 77th minute, before Darren Bent entered the fray for Dempsey. The former Sunderland striker was roundly booed by the away fans.

Fulham’s misery was complete when Johnson sent Stockdale the wrong way from the spot to complete his hat-trick after Senderos had been adjudged to have fouled Altidore. The Swiss defender left a trailing leg but the American certainly executed a spectacular fall.

Sidwell saw a late effort scrambled clear by Mannone and Kasami fired just wide but the damage was done.
