An 80th-minute strike by substitute Jonjo Shelvey sent Fulham to defeat at the Cottage.

After a goalless first half in which Darren Bent hit the post, Swansea went in front in the 56th minute when the unfortunate Aaron Hughes turned Alejandro Pozuelo’s cross into his own net.

The inspirational Scott Parker, who was Captain for the game, hauled Fulham level in the 64th minute when what appeared to be a cross dipped in at the far post.

But Swansea took the points when Shelvey fired home from the edge of the box to condemn Fulham to a fifth successive defeat in all competitions and leave the Whites in the bottom three.

Martin Jol made four changes from the side that lost to Liverpool last time out. Hughes replaced Philippe Senderos, while Derek Boateng, Bryan Ruiz and Bent came in for Steve Sidwell, Ashkan Dejagah and Alexander Kačaniklić. Parker took his place in a midfield diamond that saw Ruiz tuck in just behind Bent and Dimitar Berbatov.

In bright sunshine, Fulham started the better side, with Berbatov’s acrobatic effort from Parker’s clipped delivery forcing Michel Vorm into a fairly comfortable save. Pajtim Kasami then tiptoed his way through a host of Swansea players and appeared to be brought down just outside the box by Angel Rangel, only for Andre Marriner to wave play on.

Boateng went into the book in the 19th minute for chopping down Nathan Dyer, before Roland Lamah saw a shot fly just wide after taking a big deflection off Hughes.

Bent squandered a great chance to put the hosts in front in the 27th minute. After some neat build-up play by the Whites, Parker drove forward and crossed. Bent lost his marker and peeled away at the back stick to meet the delivery but sent his header the wrong side of the near post.

Kasami was shown a soft yellow card on 29 minutes for clipping Dyer, before Bent rattled the post with a half-volley from eight yards out after Fernando Amorebieta’s long ball had been inadvertently flicked into the Fulham man’s path by Chico Flores.

The Whites continued to press and Berbatov headed Ruiz’s corner wide on 33 minutes, before Lamah fizzed an effort four yards past Maarten Stekelenburg’s left-hand post.

Swansea should have taken the lead in the 42nd minute but were denied by the legs of Stekelenburg. Boateng lost possession to Pozuelo who fed Dyer just inside the box - but the diminutive winger’s shot was kept out by Fulham’s keeper. It proved to be the last noteworthy action of the first half.

There were no changes by either team for the second half and Kieran Richardson had to be alert to make a last-ditch challenge on Dyer in the early seconds as the Swansea man got a sight of goal. Wilfried Bony then fizzed a cross right across the face and Lamah dragged a shot wide as the Swans began the second period in the ascendency.

And the visitors were in front in the 55th minute. A free-kick on the right was taken quickly and crossed low by Pozuelo, with Hughes turning the ball into his own net after Flores had failed to connect.

Dyer then saw a shot turned behind by Richardson as Swansea hit Fulham on the break. Sidwell, who was set to come on before the goal, replaced Boateng in the 59th minute in Jol’s first substitution of the afternoon.

Hughes picked up a rare booking in the 62nd minute after catching the powerful Bony on the halfway line. Parker then drove forward after robbing Jonathan de Guzman and slipped the ball to Bent but the forward’s cross was put behind by Ashley Williams. Fulham, though, drew level from the resulting corner. The ball was played short to Parker whose apparent cross from the right-hand edge of the box went in at the far post. Whether it was deliberate mattered not a jot to the England man and his Fulham teammates.

Fulham’s joy was almost shortlived as Lamah played Bony in but, with just Stekelenburg to beat, the Ivory Coast international shot weakly at the Dutch goalkeeper.

Kačaniklić replaced Ruiz in the 76th minute but Swansea were back in front soon after when substitute Shelvey jinked past a couple of Fulham players before hitting a superb strike beyond Stekelenburg from the edge of the box.

Adel Taarabt replaced Parker in Fulham’s final change with five minutes to go and the Moroccan sent in a good cross which Flores did well to clear behind late on.

Shelvey could have added a third in the dying seconds but Sidwell nicked the ball off his toes after he’d rounded Stekelenburg before proceedings came to a close and Fulham slipped to another defeat.
