A stoppage-time equaliser from Gareth McAuley denied Fulham all three points as we were held to a 1-1 draw at home by West Bromwich Albion.

Steve Sidwell had given the Whites the lead in the first half with a volleyed finish from a corner as Fulham controlled the opening stages of the game.

But the Whites failed to add to the scoreline, with Dimitar Berbatov and Hugo Rodallega seeing three goals disallowed between them.

And it proved to be very costly as McAuley rose highest in the 92nd minute to earn the Baggies a point.

Fulham began the match brightly and, after Pajtim Kasami’s whipped cross was cleared, Bryan Ruiz snapped a volley marginally wide in the third minute.

The home side were patiently searching and probing for an opening but, although they were comfortable in possession, struggled to penetrate an organised Albion backline in a quiet opening period.

Chris Brunt then had the visitors’ first chance of note on 19 minutes when he fooled Sidwell with a drop of the shoulder before rifling in a venomous effort from 25 yards. It looked dangerous and sailed marginally wide, although replays showed that David Stockdale probably would have had it covered if it had been on target.

The Whites found the back of the net with 22 minutes gone through Sidwell. Alexander Kacaniklic sent across a corner from the left that was nodded down by Philippe Senderos into the path of Sidwell who lashed home the volley from 10 yards through a crowded penalty area.

Albion looked to respond promptly and Stockdale was called into action in the 29th minute when Brunt connected with a deep Morgan Amalfitano cross, but his header was comfortably held by the Fulham stopper.

It looked as though the Whites had nabbed a fine second when Berbatov poked in Sidwell’s dinked ball into the box, but the Bulgarian had strayed someway offside and the flag correctly denied him a first goal of the season.

Martin Jol’s men were well on top and Ruiz – who had been a driving force in most of his side’s attacks – whistled an effort over the bar from long range with 35 minutes played.

Billy Jones made a stealthy run into the box shortly before half-time to get on the end of Amalfitano’s lofted cross, but his header lacked any sort of power and Sascha Riether was easily able to hack the ball to safety.

After a tentative start to the second half, Berbatov found the back of the net seven minutes in after he’d been found by a clever Kasami pass, but he was denied by the offside flag once again, although the decision this time was marginal.

The Baggies then had their best chance of the game two minutes later when Victor Anichebe used his strength to roll Brede Hangeland before shooting straight into the body of Stockdale.

Berbatov was denied for a third time on 58 minutes but on this occasion it was Boaz Myhill rather than the flag who kept him off the scoresheet. Ruiz played him in with a perfectly weighted throughball but Myhill made a fine one-on-one save to repel the effort.

Steve Clarke made his first changes of the afternoon five minutes later, when Amalfitano and Claudio Yacob were replaced by Scott Sinclair and James Morrison.

Ruiz and Berbatov were growing in confidence and the pair combined on 66 minutes once more when Berbatov sent a bicycle kick inches over the bar from the Costa Rican’s sublime cross.

Fernando Amorebieta then entered the action for his Fulham debut, taking the place of the returning Kieran Richardson at left-back. The Venezuela international was into the thick of things immediately, as he was clattered by Jones as he began a marauding run down the left flank, with the Albion man booked for his troubles.

A dangerous looking Kasami shot was deflected behind for a corner in the 71st minute but the set-piece came to nothing as Scott Parker skewed an effort over, before Stockdale was on hand to make a brilliant save from Nicolas Anelka’s goalbound shot.

The Whites were then handed a let-off as Anelka lost his footing after being sent through on goal, although Senderos deserved credit for putting the former Chelsea man under pressure. Berbatov was then withdrawn for Rodallega, with Saido Berahino taking the place of Anichebe for the Baggies.

Fulham thought they’d got the second goal they craved with six minutes remaining but Ruiz’s effort crashed off the bar and onto the line rather than over it. Rodallega then thumped the ball beyond Myhill but the assistant’s flag went up to keep the score at 1-0.

With time running out, the Whites suffered a huge blow when Ruiz was stretchered from the field following an aerial challenge with Liam Ridgewell. Damien Duff came on for the stricken forward as six minutes of added time were announced.

And West Brom found an equaliser in the second of those added minutes as McAuley powered in Brunt’s driven delivery at the far post to earn the visitors a share of the spoils.
